In the
Wind, September 21, 2006
Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what’s “in the wind”, coming events and items of interest at
the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver’s ocean access community centre,
for the week of September 21-September 27, 2006 and beyond:
Longboats are Coming! Practice Dates Sept. 23 & 24
Over 3,000 paddlers, from novice to expert, will be tugging at the sea
surface over the next two weekends to propel 10 person voyageur canoes
over English Bay as part of the 20th Annual UBC Intramural Sports “Day
of the Longboat”. This is the biggest event held at the Jericho Sailing
Centre each year and it’s an incredible spectacle to behold-very spectator
friendly. Three hundred 10 person teams portage their way through a
one hour orientation including dryland and on water training this weekend
with the big event happening on September 30 and October 1 from 0800H-1700H.

Heart and Stroke – Walk For Heart--This Sunday September 24
Different strokes for different folks. Strokes occurring at the Jericho
Sailing Centre usually involve paddles and oars but this Sunday the
JSCA donates the use of our part of our facility to support research
for a different type of stroke. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is a
leading funder of heart and stroke research in Canada, and the Walk
for Heart is one of the Foundations largest community based fundraising
events. For more information or to register, stroll over to www.heartandstroke.ca/walk
. You can also register in person at the Jericho Sailing Centre Sunday
morning at 0800H. The walk starts at 1000H rain or shine.
UBC SC Windsurfing Jam – Saturday, Sept. 23 @ 1300H
Come out and dance with the wind, test your windsurfing skills and learn
some new tricks. The UBC Sailing Club will be hosting a small windsurfing
competition for boardheads of all skill levels. There will be 3 events
and everyone is invited to compete.
1.) Freestyle Seminar. Tips on freestyle moves. None of us are experts
but we’ll try.
2.) Open Class Freestyle Supercross. Contestants must complete “Supercross”
obstacle course. Criteria is time and points for stunts, enthusiasm
and style. All skill levels welcome.
3.) One-on-one smackdowns. Head to head action. Crowd votes, not necessarily
based on skill. Elimination format. Competitors pick their own gear.
Voting by crowd noise. Costumes highly recommended. All skill levels
welcome.
The BBQ will be on and a good time will be had by all. There will be
a prize for the most enthusiastic competitor. Please email UBC Sailing
Club`s resident boardhead Randy Clark clark.randal@gmail.com or show
up early (1100H ) if you would like to help set up.
Penguin Cup Racing Coming to an Iceberg Near You
Rig with numb fingers and walk like a Penguin in your cumbersome winter
sailing attire-- Penguin Cup Racing Dates are October 8, 15, 22 &
29 @1230H. It’ll be chilly on the chuck but a warm fire awaits your
return in the Sailor’s Lounge.
UBC Old Boys Rugby Football Club -- Field of Dreams 2007
The UBC Old Boys Ravens Rugby Club’s Official Season Opener against
their arch rival Meralomas Rugby Club was a hard fought battle in both
divisions with the Lomas catching all the lucky bounces to pull out
two wins. This Saturday the Ravens play an Away game that feels just
like Home as they travel back to the place of their origin to take on
the UBC Thunderbirds Rugby Club at the UBC Rugby Grounds. The First
Division teams kick off at 1300H with the Premier Division Teams gnashing
cleats at 1430H.
Mini Rugby Program Sundays @ 1000H
“Over the hill”, former Canadian Rugby team member and current UBC Old
Boy Gareth Rees (who will soon be using an “over the hill” windsurfer
as a tackle dummy) is running the UBC Ravens Mini Rugby program over
the fall and winter out of the Jericho Sailing Centre. The program is
for kids ages 6-13 and goes Sundays from 10-Noon. Contact Gareth for
more info or to sign up (604)562-9392.
Rack Attack Volunteer
Many, many thanks to Mark Daigle, who despite an absence of volunteer
helpers, braved rain squalls and Arnold’s bad jokes to construct 5 new
boat racks for the Jericho Compound.
Jericho Photo Contest
We are preparing the JSCA New and Improved 2007 Tide Chart Calendar
and need some classic Jericho Sailing Centre type photos to grace it’s
pages. Send us your best photos and you could win a 2007 Calendar plus
a Jericho H2O Travel Mug.

Notice of JSCA AGM Printing Error
Our printers blew a gybe in the printing of our Notice of AGM which
should have arrived in your snail mail box earlier this week. At no
additional cost to the JSCA the correct version is being printed and
should arrive in your mailbox early next week. The Notice of AGM is
also posted on our website www.jsca.bc.ca and onsite at the Centre for

Whack me with a Broom! The Real Tasar BC’s Sweeper
I blew a gybe last week reporting that Brian McVicar had swept the Tasar
BC’s Sweeper award. My apologies to Brian and congratulations to Chelsea
and Mike the real recipients!
English Bay Safety Seminar Off-Season Edition September 25
@ 1900H
This two hour safety information seminar covers all the information
needed to help you recreate safety on Burrard Inlet. As we approach
the cold water season this session will focus on keeping you safe in
Fall/Winter/Spring conditions. RSVP JSCA Office.
Safety Tips
All craft operating out of the Jericho Sailing Centre are required by
law to have a sound signalling device on board. Before you run out and
install an “Oooga” horn on your kayak or an amplified ring tone on your
Laser, a simple whistle will meet this requirement. At five bucks for
a pealess Fox 40 whistle, in a distress situation, it could be the best
investment you ever made.
Have a safe week!
Fair winds,
Mike
