Jericho Swim Beach Fails Water Quality Test - Locarno Beach Passes
|
|
Location of contrary water tests and their proximity to the Jericho Sailing Centre - this week we'd like to identify ourselves more closely to Locarno Beach, however, no plans to change name to the Locarno Sailing Centre
|
For the first time in more than 30 years the Jericho Beach swim area has been closed to swimming due to an unacceptable level of E.coli Bacterial. Vancouver Coastal Health has warned that primary contact activities including: swimming, surfing, waterskiing: in which the whole body or face and trunk are frequently immersed or wetted can increase exposure to E.coli bacteria.
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association recommends users take precautions including avoidance of the swim beach area to the east of the Jericho Sailing Centre (Jerry's Cove); and showering immediately after primary contact activities. Jericho Folk Club August 21
|

The Jericho Folk Club features
Brian Robertson Trio
Tuesday, Aug. 21
Vancouver based folk musician Brian Robertson has been called a genuine BC treasure for his well-crafted and entertaining songs about the west coast, as well as ones that reflect more universal themes of love, travel, social justice and the blues. Born and raised in Powell River on the west coast of Canada, his working life suggests something of renaissance man - fisherman, mill worker, cabbie, engineer, economist and historical consultant. From that, and his extensive travels and interests, spring the range, depth and authenticity of the songs he's written. Check out his website at (http://www.brianrobertson.ca/) Filling out the Brian Robertson Trio are the sensational BC Open Champion fiddler Michael Burnyeat (https://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Burnyeat/100009336078372) and the much-acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Victor Smith (http://wheatinthebarley.com/bio.html)
Doors open 7:00 with a Fiddle Tunes Session.
Sing along and Open Stage at 7:30. The Feature Act plays a first set at about 8:10. After that we take have a break in the stage presentation for another Fiddle Session followed by more Singing and Open Stage. The Feature Act plays a second set starting about 9:00

Safe Ocean Recreation Tips
|
Here are some things they must know about recreating in an ocean environment:
Be Aware of the Shipping Lane, ships at anchor and all vessel movements
Always Stay with Your Craft When a sailing dinghy, windsurfer or kayak capsizes they are usually within a couple of swim strokes of their crew. Some craft, particularly SUP's and surf skis, require a safety leash (in good condition and properly attached) as they can easily get away in a capsize situation. Never leave your craft in an emergency situation as it is far easier to spot than a person in the water. Use the Buddy System
Always sail, paddle, row with someone else. Let a reliable friend or relative know when and where you are going and when you expect to return. Diligently contact them upon your safe return. If you are launching from Jericho Beach stop in at the JSCA office to let us know when and where you are going and when you expect to return. Be Aware of Sunset
Be aware of when sunset is and don't be out beyond it. If something goes wrong for you: equipment failure; changing conditions; fatigue, etc., you are very difficult to find in the dark. Make sure your safety float plan includes plenty of time to get off of the water before sunset.
|
SAFETY NOTICE: NO Mast Rigging from Patio or Roof
|
After a close call, potentially serious accident last weekend we are reminding users of the Jericho Sailing Centre that use of the Galley Patio, staircase or rooftop for rigging/tweaking your mast halyards, shrouds, lines, floats, etc. is strictly prohibited. To gain the advantage of height &/or gravity we suggest using the Jericho Pier at lower water levels or the east sides of Ramp # 2 or #3 as potential options.
