Celebration of Light Fireworks |
The first of the annual Celebration of Light fireworks shows takes place this Saturday over English Bay. If fireworks turn you on, "Celebration" is a perfect accent to three Vancouver mid-summer night eves right in the sweet spot of summer. The fireworks are best viewed from English Bay Beach. Kits Beach offers a next best view with Jericho accommodating the cheap seats - distant view but easier parking and disembarking when the show ends. Seating at the Jericho Patio and Grill is tough to find after 2030H. The rooftop deck will be open to members & their accompanying guests (60 maximum) with security in place to enforce no alcohol or smoking. The show dates are July 27 & 31, and August 3; Start time 2200H.
For more information on the Celebration of Light check out their website:

EXTREME DANGER WARNING - Celebration of Light Fireworks |
One of the most dangerous situations for operators of small water craft in Vancouver occurs at the conclusion of each Celebration of Light fireworks show. Hundreds of powerboats are hastily heading for home in all different directions and the sea surface is filled with crossing boat chop on waves. Lights from boats and downtown reflect everywhere and a kayak, canoe, rowboat or other small vessel is almost impossible to see, even if the power vessel Skipper hasn't been drinking, and in some cases, he has.
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association, in the strongest possible way, advises our members and other small, naturally powered craft to not put themselves in this vulnerable position. If you choose to be out there, please remember that the Coast Guard and other safety boats will have their hands full and may not even be able to locate your craft within the boating frenzy if you need them. Also remember, that you the Skipper, as always, are solely responsible for your safety and that of your crew. |
UBC Sailing Club Hosts Big Brothers & Sisters |
| Future Jericho Rescue Team member Jack lets out a Yippie Ki Yay! as Big Brother Scott monitors progress on the GPS of Jericho Rescue |
The UBC Sailing Club hosted some special guests last Saturday as they took Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Canada sailing out of the Jericho Sailing Centre. The weather was hot & sunny as the kids and their big brothers enjoyed sailing excursions on the Bay and a BBQ picnic. On behalf of the entire JSCA community, thank-you to Maranatha Coulas and her awesome crew for making this an exceptional day for these kids.

Race Registration Update! |
Racers - please check and update your registrations
If you race at Jericho on Sunday or Tuesday night, you can see your finishes in each race, and overall for each day you race, at jracing.org. To see your name as well as your sail number, and to be included in the series results, you need to register.
Online registration is fairly straight forward at jracing.org, but please watch a couple of things:
1. If you sail club boats. When you register, the default Start and End dates for your registration are set to January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013. This is fine if you always sail the same boat. However, if you sail a club boat, using different sail numbers on different days, you will probably have to register each time you sail, entering the correct sail number, and setting both the Start and End dates to the day you sailed that boat. You can register as often as you need to, but each registration must have the correct class, sail number, and dates. (I plan to make it easier to do this, but for now, please do it by registering each time you sail, and changing the default dates.)
2. A new crew for a day. If you normally have the same person as crew, but a different person crews for you on one day, you need to do a couple of things. First, you will need two registrations for your regular crew. The first registration should have an End date a day or so before your alternate crew sailed. The second registration should have a Start date a day or two after that date. Then you need to register your alternate crew (or they can register themselves) for the day when they sailed (i.e. Start and End dates set to that day). If you register your alternate crew, without changing the registration for your regular crew, you will see three people listed for your boat on the day you had the alternate crew.
Please help us keep the race and series results up to date, complete, and correct by checking and updating your race registrations as required.
Thanks for your help with this.

Weekly Safety Tip - Launch & Transiting Area |
The waterspace in front of the Jericho Sailing Centre between the Jericho Pier and the rock groyne from the shore to the orange barrels is a training and transiting zone only. This area gets extremely congested on busy days and we ask you, when leaving shore to be very aware of traffic and plan your route through it. Delaying your launch from shore by a minute or two may be your best strategy.
If you are an experienced sailor, windsurfer, paddler or rower, please move though this area and do not loiter. If you are new to your sport please consider launching and/or practicing from the new beach area immediately east of the Jericho Sailing Centre. Paddlecraft are encouraged to use the new beach launch area which is unaffected by waves from the west and provides placid lake-like launch conditions.

English Bay Safety Seminar - August 19 |
The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of "sea disasters" over the past 39 years.
Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar on August 19 at 1900H RSVP JSCA office. |

Jericho Sailing Centre Whistles - Fashion & Function Only $6 |
| Tweet Us at @jerichosailing |
All craft launching out of Jericho are required by law to have a sound signalling device on board. The easiest way to meet this requirement is to attach a whistle to your PFD. The Jericho Sailing Centre Association office is now selling the new, flattie "Fox 40 Whistle-World's Most Advanced Pealess Whistle"-in your choice of 5 fashion colours complete with Jericho logo, for only $6. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever own and the aerodynamic design is guaranteed to improve your boat speed.
In a distress situation blow your whistle multiple (7+) times in short sharp bursts to gain the attention of others. Remember that sound carries on the wind, so if the wind is heavy, don't waste your energy trying to gain the attention of those far to windward of you if there are other options. If you choose not to own one of our cool new Jericho Fox 40 whistles, do not use an old hockey, or other whistle with a pea, as salt water immersions will turn your pea into non-acoustical soup. |
Bon Voyage and Thank You Ross! |
| "Water is wet!" |
After 27 years of exceptional service to the members of the Jericho Sailing Centre Association, our Groundskeeper, Ross Risby has had to leave the Jericho Sailing Centre staff for health reasons.
Ross's always sunny disposition, hard work ethic and witty "Rossisms" ("If you don't put food in your belly, you get hungry." & "Water is wet!") will be sorely missed around Jericho and we all wish him well as he navigates into the next chapter of his life.
In 1993, Ross's quick and decisive action saved the Jericho Sailing Centre building from possibly burning to the ground after discovering a fire embedded in the roof above our sprinkler and detection system.
Ross's financial prospects for the future are seriously challenged by his health so the JSCA has started a special fund to help him and we encouage members to make a donation through the JSCA office.
To date members have donated in excess of $1,600 to Ross. Thank you and please keep the donations coming. |
