Jericho Marginal Wharf Update

Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation Planning Staff are currently developing a demolition and ecological restoration plan in conjunction with the Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Program to remove the 1.5 acre concrete wharf and liberate central Jericho Beach after 70+ years of captivity.

Upon BIEAP approval a public tender will be issued for a demolition and restoration contract.

A public consultation will be held this spring to develop a revised concept plan. The JSCA favours recreational, non-motor powered, small craft access from the beach and will be encouraging all users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to take an active role in the public consultation process.

Process updates (and appeals to get involved) will be included in future "in the wind" newsletters. For more info. you can hook into the Park Board's website at

Boat Show- Thanks to the Best Crew in Vancouver

On behalf of all JSCA members thanks to the fine folks who volunteered in the Jericho Sailing Centre booth at the Vancouver Boat Show in the Vancouver Convention Centre. Fifty members volunteered to set up the display and spread the good news about low cost accessible programs through Vancouver's Ocean Access Community Centre.

Remembering Bob Jones - Sunday, March 6 @ 1400H

Bob Jones joined the JSCA in 1978 right after he took up windsurfing at the spry young age of 63. For the next 21 years Bob was a regular Jericho Beach boardhead where he inspired many people of all ages to take the plunge into windsurfing lessons, offered tips to beginners in English and/or French, and volunteered with the Westcoast Boardsailing Club, a group he helped form, which conducted the annual Boardswap at the Jericho Sailing Centre.

Bob had a perpetual inner "fountain of youth" which provided him with boundless energy and optimism for life, windsurfing, and his fellow salt water citizens. He reluctantly hung up up his windsurfing wetsuit booties in 1999 stating "The body and soul are still willing, it's just my eyesight, I can only make out shapes now." Bob continued to be a regular visitor to the Jericho Sailing Centre, a place he was exceptionally fond of, for the rest of his life.

Bob passed away last week at the age of 96. Friends and acquaintances of Bob Jones are invited to remember him this Sunday, March 6 at 1400H in the Burrard Room of the Jericho Sailing Centre.

Disabled Sailing Association Looking for Volunteers

You've escaped the housework, the grind of the job and are finally where you want to be - out on the water, with the sun in your face, and the wind just perfect. Nothing beats a great day of sailing. Others would love to have the experience but they can't do it alone.

Share your love of sailing with members of the Disabled Sailing Association of BC (DSA-BC). The group, based at Jericho Sailing Centre, was formed in 1988 to enable people with disabilities to access the activity of sailing.

DSA-BC relies on volunteers to launch boats, accompany clients around English Bay, teach sailing skills or just enjoy being out on the water. DSA sails Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 AM 6 PM starting May 26th.

Last year, 312 sailors with disabilities enjoyed more than 870 sailing experience with DSA-BC - each sail was made possible with help from people like you.

For more information contact Eric Molendyk: email or phone 604-688-6464 ext. 117.

Bon Voyage George
The JSCA lost a treasured volunteer, sailor, member last month with the passing of George Wang. George was an avid sailing and volunteer member of our affiliate Disabled Sailing Association of BC and came into contact with hundreds of fellow disabled sailors and volunteers over the past 15 years at the Jericho Sailing Centre. When he was at Jericho, George always had a sparkle in his eye, a gleaming, effervescent smile and a glowing positive attitude that seemed to rub off on everyone he came into contact with, this was his "happy place". The photo at right is of George preparing to race in the 2010 Mobility Cup Regatta this past September.

On the Water, Your Safety is Your Responsibility

A reminder to members who play on the bay at this time of year-place an extra emphasis on boat safety for yourself and your crew. Jericho Rescue and other boaters are notably scarce at this time of the year so you must take extra care to ensure a safe on water session. It starts with a check of the weather forecast and tidal activity. Let a friend or family member know you are going, where you are going and when you expect to be back on shore (follow-up with an apr├Ęs sailing phone call). Do a meticulous pre-launch check of your craft and equipment. Recognize when conditions are beyond your ability and choose not to launch.

Make sure you are properly dressed-wetsuit/drysuit/hat/booties/gloves-including your PFD. Double check your safety equipment-paddles, bailer, whistle, flares. Know when the sun is setting and understand that the wind often shuts off abruptly in the hour before sunset. Don't go farther from shore than you care to paddle back if you or your equipment should fail or the wind shuts off.

One final tip: enclose your fully charged cell phone in two sealed sandwich bags and keep on your person. In the event of a sea disaster you can't solve yourself, dialing *16 will put you in touch with the Canadian Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination Centre.

Fair winds,
