THIS WEEKEND -- The Regatta formerly known as "Hobie Classic"
What's new pussycat? An annual fixture event in June at the Jericho Sailing Centre has been reborn on it's trek to 9 lives and has changed it's name.Herds of cats will be prowling English Bay in the annual (what used to be known as the Hobie Classic) Jericho Catamaran Open regatta this weekend. There has been a resurgence in cat sailing and racing at the Jericho Sailing Centre in recent years but they haven't all been (cat bite your tongue) "Hobies". Nacras have been the pick of the litter in the cat comeback at Jericho (but don't tell the Hobie Tiger sailors I said so) and these cats were born to race. The Hobie Class Association rules do not allow other manufacturers classes to compete in "Hobie" regattas (read "does not play well with others") so the name change was necessary so as not to rub anyone's fur the wrong way.

Cats from all over are coming our way this weekend including a strong contingent of our American cat cousins who will be doing the catwalk up the I-5 to their favourite Canadian scratching post. This regatta is for Hobie 16, 17, 18 and Formula 18. A class start will be given to each cat class with 5 or more boats competing.
Racing will take place on Saturday from 1100H-1700H and Sunday from 1100-1430H.
Regular Sunday Racing Returns on June 27
There will be no regular Sunday Racing over the next  two weekends as the Jericho Sailing Centre hosts the Jericho Catamaran Open and MEC Paddlefest 2010.

Subaru Vancouver International Half Ironman - July4th
A Half Ironman Triathlon is a swim/bike/run endurance event. The swim will start at 6:30am at the Jericho Sailing Centre where the athletes will swim 2km (this will take approximately 20-60 minutes to complete depending upon their ability) where a section of the beach just west of the Sailing Center will be closed to the general public until approximately 9:00am but open to spectators. The athletes will then complete 4 loops (approximately 90km) of the bike course around Spanish Banks and UBC which will take the athletes between 2 to 4 hours. The athletes will then run on Jericho Park trails from the Sailing Center, along 4th Avenue sidewalks to Locarno Beach and along Spanish Banks for 2 loops and a total of 21km. The runners will be on the trails from approximately 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. During the day there will be amplified music and race announcing, and a hospitality area. The post-race celebration will end by 3:30pm and the event will be packed up and out of the area by 6pm.

Volunteers - we need you! Approximately 400 elite and recreational tri athletes from around the world and from our own local communities will gather to test their endurance, compete for prizes and medals and enjoy the magnificent setting of the Spanish Bank Beaches and UBC. Some of the athletes will be preparing for the famous Hawaii Ironman this fall and the race will be produced into a television program to be aired on Rogers Sportsnet. Becoming a volunteer will help make this event a success - the athletes need your help and it is very inspiring! Many positions are available and Volunteers will receive a race shirt and food. You can register as a volunteer at www.lifesport.ca/Volunteer.php.

Windsurfing/Kayaking rinse Racks

An avid paddling member has asked us to remind windsurfing/kayaking rinse rack users not to leave their craft on the rack after they've been rinsed - other members would like to use these facilities to. Please be considerate of your fellow JSCA members.
Jericho Sailing Centre Etiquette

Common sense and consideration of fellow members help make the Jericho Sailing Centre a true community centre with a friendly salt water community atmosphere. Here are a few etiquette reminders to keep things sailing along smoothly:
  • The Jericho Sailing Centre is a SMOKE FREE facility.
  • the areas adjacent to launching ramps are for craft launch/retrieval only. Do not rig, repair or otherwise loiter in this area.
  • Give pathway users the right of way and bear in mind they may be distracted and not aware that you are crossing the pathway with your craft or launch rope.
  • launch dollies are for launching/retrieval only (not for storage) and must be returned to the fence immediately after use.
  • if you launch from your own dolly or trailer return it to your storage spot after launching.
  • do not use the winches unless you are familiar with their safe operation. Winch instruction is available from staff or Jericho Rescue Team members. Only members or registered guests may use winches & dollies.
  • only leashed, well behaved dogs are allowed in the compound, no dogs are allowed in the building or on the deck. Do not tie dogs to the base of stairwells or in other traffic areas. Do not leave your dog onshore while you are on the water. The City prohibits dogs on beaches. In consideration of other Jericho users please consider leaving your dog at home while visiting the Jericho Sailing Centre.
  • the Jericho Sailing Centre is a Smoke Free Facility-thank you for not smoking anywhere within our compound.
  • Please coil hoses immediately after use and conserve water.
  • Do not block aisle ways.
  • Rinse racks are for rinsing not drying.
