Jericho Sailing Centre "in the wind" August 16, 2007

Ahoy JSCA Members:

Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for August 16-22, 2007 and beyond:

Canadian Outrigger Canoe Championships comes THROUGH Jericho
For the first time in 5 years the Canadian Outrigger Canoe Championships will NOT be held at the Jericho Sailing Centre as our friends from the Kits Yacht Club will be hosting the event this weekend. However, many of the visiting boats will be coming through the Centre as the tight access to KYC is not very 45' canoe & ama friendly. Jericho Rescue will also be providing safety support for the big event which usually includes up to 300 paddlers, many of whom are JSCA members. Six person outriggers race Saturday commencing at 0830H with OC 1's & 2's racing Sunday. I predict that our home teams the Jericho Outrigger Canoe Club (JOCC) will do very well as they are completely unburdened by hosting such a large event this year and will be totally focused on making everyone else eat their wake. For more info., hut, hut hoe over to www.jerichooutrigger.com

English Bay Safety Seminar Monday, August 20 @ 1900H
There is no substitute for experience, but why suffer the same boring old sea disasters personally when you can learn from the experiences of others? Voyage through the pages of the Jericho Rescue Logs from years gone by with our trained rescue staff and discover how you can avoid a gnarly ride back to shore on the Jericho Rescue boats. The English Bay Safety Seminar covers all the Personal, Equipment and Environment safety information you must know to recreate safely on Vancouver's largest playground. This 2 hour interactive seminar is free to members and landlubbers alike. RSVP by return email or through the JSCA office.

Annual Voyage of 'Discovery' a hit with the Brothers
The annual Discovery Sailing Club's Big Brother sailing day last Saturday was a splashing success for 14 kids and their surrogate senior siblings. Commodore Ian Burge and event organizers Karyn Rovers and Mary Thompson rallied the Discovery crew and gave these kids a great day of fun on the water they won't soon forget. Thank you to all those Discovery Sailing Club members who came out and shared the best of Jericho with these guests. Thanks also to Jericho Rescue Team member Jonas Abersbach who volunteered with our safety support.

Another Voyage of Discovery
While it won't rank up there in naval achievements with the epic voyages of Columbus, Magellan or Thor Hyderdahl's Kon Tiki expedition, JSCA member Dale Rollins became the first Stand-up Paddler to voyage from Jericho to the North Shore and back. According to Rollins it took an hour there and an hour and a half coming back-evidently more uphill on the return journey!

JSCA Notice of AGM Tuesday October 23 at 1900H
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association's 34th Annual General Meeting will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at 1900H in the English Bay Banquet Room of the Jericho Sailing Centre, 1300 Discovery Street, Vancouver, B.C. The 2006/2007 J.S.C.A. Board and Committees will report on their accomplishments this past year and the challenges for the future. Please plan to attend and participate in the future direction of your ocean access community centre.

Call for Nominations
Voting will take place to elect eight members for a two-year term to our 15 member Board of Directors. The J.S.C.A. Board meets once a month to set policy and determine Jericho's direction. Interested members who have time and expertise to offer are invited to submit a letter indicating their experience and areas of interest to the J.S.C.A. Nominations Committee c/o the Jericho office no later than 1700H, Tuesday, October 9. The signed nomination letter must include your name, address and telephone number. For additional information contact Mike Cotter, J.S.C.A. General Manager 224-4177 or email mike@jsca.bc.ca.

Jericho Oceanman August 26
This fun, politically incorrectly named annual event gets launched Sunday, August 26. It's a 2-3 hour adventure race which includes a 1Km ocean swim, 6Km paddle, 8 Km run and a mystery event to finish. Salmon Barbeque, live music (The Hawaiian sliding guitar sounds of The Swagmen) and awards. Ebb over to www.oceanman.ca for more information.

Canadian Laser Masters Championship Regatta Sept 1-3
We`re just two weeks away from the 2007 Canadian Laser Masters Championships Sept. 1-3. Participants must be at least 35 as of Sept. 1. There are four divisions as follows: Apprentice 35-44; Masters 45-54; Grand Master 55-64; Great Grand Masters 65+. Radials are welcome. For the Notice of Race beam over to our website Racing pages. For information on this event or anything to do with Lasers contact Andy Hunt at bclaser@hotmail.com

Ground Craft Storage Space Wanted
Not using your ground stored craft? The JSCA will buy your spot back. We currently have boats on our waiting list and we would like to accommodate them all. At this time our staff is taking stock of inactive craft populating the compound. If necessary, under the terms of our Boat Storage Policy, storage rights for these craft may be withdrawn. We are currently asking members who may wish to voluntarily relinquish their ground storage to contact the office to arrange a refund on the unused portion of their storage fees. This offer does not apply to rack storage.

LAUNCH Dolly Etiquette
We would like to reminder members that JSCA launch dollies are for everyone's use. Please show consideration of your fellow members by using dollies only for launching and retrieval. Dollies used to launch boats must be immediately returned to the fence and not left on the shoreline.
