Jericho Sailing Centre "in the wind" June 28, 2007

Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for June 28-July 4, 2007 and beyond:

Canada Day at Jericho, Eh!
Jericho Sailing Centre, the former Department of National Defense "Building 13", is a natural place to connect with Canada Day and celebrate the freedom we as Canadians enjoy every day.

Built in the 1930s to facilitate civil defense, DND Jericho Air Station was originally occupied by people launching flying boats and seaplanes into the sea, patrolling over the rugged west coast of British Columbia to keep us free from potential threat. They risked their lives, everyday. They launched their seaworthy craft into every sea surface and weather condition. Their purpose was to preserve our country so we could be free to launch on the sunny days, or whenever we choose. They toughed it out, they did what they had to do so that we can do what we choose to do, which isn't so tough. We appreciate their efforts, and what better way to appreciate them than to launch your boat from the Jericho Sailing Centre for a leisurely patrol of Vancouver's English Bay on Canada Day?

"Canada's Cup" Special Canada Day Sunday Racing
Unfurl your flag and sheet in for your country at the Special Canada Day Edition of Sunday Racing. Show your colours, fly the red maple leaf, sing the National Anthem! There will be a prize for the crew of the most patriotic vessel as judged by our Race Committee. Sunday, July 1st @ 1230H. Paddlers & rowers welcome!

Turn your family and friends into Jericho Junkies!
Introduce your friends, family, neighbours and co-workers to the Jericho Sailing Centre. Our school programs are filling fast. Windsurfing lessons from $49, kayaking lessons from $69, dinghy sailing lessons from $230. Windsurfing season's passes from $199 Kayaking season's passes $330. Dinghy Sailing season's passes $300.

Thank You to our Workparty Volunteers
Thank you to Paul Morris, Frank & Helen Elfert, Brian Key and "Workhorse" Don for all of your volunteer work in our NativePlantGarden this past weekend. Thanks also to all of those members who helped Benj and Rory hoof unpaid boats out of their spots in preparation for our Bailiff Auction.

Unpaid Boats Being Blown Out - Volunteer Workparty Saturday June 30
Ground storage craft which are unpaid and heading for the Bailiff Auction July 7 are being removed from their spot in preparation for the Annual Bailiff Auction, so that we may accommodate relocation requests and new craft coming into the compound. We need some volunteer muscle and would appreciate all of the help we can get this Saturday at 1300H. If you are currently on our relocation waiting list volunteering for this project will help us accommodate you.

Bailiff Auction & Boat Sale - Saturday July 7
Our annual Bailiff Auction where the JSCA auctions off craft for which storage fees have not been paid will take place at Noon on Saturday, July 7. Craft heading for the auction will be available for viewing on Friday, July 6. Photos of craft heading toward the auction will be posted on our website on Saturday July 1 www.jsca.bc.ca .

This is also an opportunity for members to sell their used equipment. Bring your craft & equipment marked for sale on Saturday morning. You can include your gear in the auction or quietly sell it on the side.

Hazardous Goods Storage
A reminder to members that propane, solvents, paint and other hazardous goods must not be stored within the Jericho Sailing Centre-check your locker to make sure you comply.

In other News - JSCA Mariners need players!
The Jericho Galley Smokies grilled and basted the JSCA Mariners 20.5 to 2 in Lunch Bag League Softball last Tuesday. They have graciously agreed to a re-match on Tuesday, July 10 at 1400H because they assume we're hopeless. We are looking for experienced softballing members who are available for a one hour game at this time to help us restore a semblance of organizational pride. Sign-up via return email SVP.

Windsure Windsurfin' Wednesdays!
Whatever your windsurfing level, from novice to expert, come out on Wednesday evenings between 1800H-2000H (weather dependant), let me know what you want to work on, and I'll coach you through it-you could be just one good tip away from completing that maneuver you've been working on.

The Centreboard
We invite all JSCA members to contribute pictures and articles to "the Centreboard" portion of our website simply by replying to this email.

Second Annual Complete Crew BBQ - Saturday, July 21st
You are invited to a community event for all Jericho members. A chance to get together, swap sea stories and enjoy a BBQ here at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Meet other club members, kayakers, racers, paddlers, windsurfers or join in the Stand Paddling Race sponsored by Windsure Windsurfing. Last year over one hundred members attended and a good time was had by all. Enjoy a quality day on the water and then let us do the cooking- Saturday, July 21 @ 1600H.

Fair winds,

Mike
