Jericho Sailing Centre - In the Wind June 21, 2007

Ahoy JSCA Members:
As we plunge into the longest days of the year, here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for June 21-27, 2007 and beyond:

Viking Sailing Club Celebrates 40th Anniversary!
One of the original corner stones of the Jericho Sailing Centre, the Viking Sailing Club, celebrates 40 years before the mast this Saturday, June 23. The Viking SC along with the UBC Sailing Club were the original clubs involved in the formation of the Jericho Sailing Centre back in 1974. The Vikings will celebrate as part of their Annual VSC Sailpast, otherwise known as "Looting and Pillaging 101". Don't be concerned when you see JSCA members swashbuckling around the Centre and our adjoining waters with their Viking horns on this Saturday, they're mostly harmless.

Volunteer Workparty - Native Plant Garden June 23
The next volunteer workparty for the Jericho Sailing Centre's Native Plant Garden will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 1000H. Please join our resident garden expert, Paul Morris, in improving the aesthetics of the Jericho Sailing Centre.

Rookie Racing Clinic - Sunday, June 24 @ 0900H
There is no better way to improve your sailing skills than to race. Take the plunge! Learn to race your sailing dinghy in a beginner friendly fashion. We will show you all the ropes and ease your transition from an aimless lollygagging sailor to a focussed racer. We'll cover starting sequences, racing right of ways, courses and basic strategies and tactics. Following the clinic you'll be ready to enter the regular Sunday Racing event which commences at 1230H. Registration required through the JSCA Office. The clinic is free to JSCA members and $69 for non-members.

Unpaid Boats Being Blown Out - Volunteer Workparty Saturday
We're stacking them deep and getting ready to sell them cheap! Ground storage craft which are unpaid and heading for the Bailiff Auction July 7 will be removed from their spot and banished to the far reaches, so that we may accommodate relocation requests and new craft coming into the compound. We need some volunteer muscle and would appreciate all of the help we can get this Saturday at 1300H. If you are currently on our relocation waiting list volunteering for this project will help us accommodate you.

English Bay Safety Seminar - Monday, June 25 @ 1900H
Thirty four years of experience rescuing JSCA members has taught us a thing or two about preventing mishaps on the water. This 2 hour program covers the principles of safety that will make your salt water recreation safer and more enjoyable. A must for anyone who is new to the Jericho Sailing Centre. RSVP JSCA Office Free to members and non-members alike.

Special Sunday Race Day- July 1, Canada Day

JSCA Sponsors 3 Teams for the Tasar Worlds!
OK, well a JSCA sponsorship includes absolutely no financial support but all of our best wishes, a hat and a burgee. Richard Spencer & Peter Graham; Marie & Guy Wall; Shelly Macey and Gary Brandt are all heading to the Tasar Worlds in Phuket (carefully pronounced "Foo-ket") Thailand July 2-11. You can follow their progress on the official website www.tasarworlds.com .

If you are on the list or know how to contact someone on the list please contact the JSCA office immediately-this gear is heading toward the rocky shores of our Annual JSCA Bailiff Auction.

Bailiff Auction & Boat Sale - Saturday July 7
Our annual Bailiff Auction where the JSCA auctions off craft for which storage fees have not been paid will take place at Noon on Saturday, July 7. This is also an opportunity for members to sell their used equipment. A head's up for members considering buying or selling equipment. More info to come as the day draws nearer.

Windsure Windsurfin' Wednesdays!
NO WWW next Wednesday June 27. WWW returns Wednesday July 4. Whatever your windsurfing level, from novice to expert, come out on Wednesday evenings between 1800H-2000H (weather dependant), let me know what you want to work on, and I'll coach you through it-you could be just one good tip away from completing that maneuver you've been working on.

The Centreboard
We invite all JSCA members to contribute pictures and articles to "the Centreboard" portion of our website simply by replying to this email.

June is Water Safety Month
Make a thorough pre-launch check part of your rigging routine. Check all parts for wear & tear especially in high stress areas-centre board wells, rudder assemblies, mast bases, shrouds- and don't forget your plugs. Be prepared, be safe-next English Bay Safety Seminar Monday, June 25 @ 1900H sign-up in the JSCA office.

Fair winds,
Mike
