Jericho Sailing Centre In the wind XXXIX
Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest
at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for
May 17-23, 2007 and beyond:
Victoria Day Weekend
Many JSCA members mark this long weekend as the "official"
start to their sailing/paddling/surfing/rowing season, or at least a
good time to visit their boat and kick off the moss. The weather looks
good for Sunday and Monday, come down and spend some quality time with
your boat.
A Very Floody Place
Don't think the flood watch warnings over the next few weeks will affect
your use and enjoyment of the waters off of the Jericho Sailing Centre?
Think again. The Fraser River debris trap which removes a good deal
of the drift wood flowing into Georgia Strait will be overwhelmed by
extraordinarily high flood water levels and unable to contain the majority
of floating hazards. Keep your eyes peeled for an unusually high volume
of debris in the water over the next several weeks or plan to spend
some extra quality time with your fiberglass repair kit.
Jericho Boat Show Open House Recap
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association 2007 season was officially launched
last Saturday by Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan. Sam spoke of the importance
of the Jericho Sailing Centre's role in providing naturally powered
ocean access opportunities for skippers of small craft. An avid sailor,
Sam fondly remembered his days onboard as the founder of the Disabled
Sailing Association of BC. Sam also recalled his time on the JSCA's
Board of Directors and the prevailing sense of teamwork required to
make the Jericho Sailing Centre the success it is. Sam, an accomplished
musician, so enjoyed a premier performance by Jericho's own in-house
Samba band "Zambata" that he is considering changing his name
to Sam-ba Sullivan.
Bike for Green & Blue
Thanks to JSCA Past President, Gail Owen, for peddling this idea to
us. The volunteers and staff of the JSCA are participating in the Bike
to Work Program in the Lower Mainland. We encourage all of our members
to register under your employer for kilometres ridden to and from work
at www.vacc.bc.ca/biketowork/ . The website keeps track of your accumulated
kms ridden and calculates the measure of pollutants you didn't put in
the air. It's a great idea leading up to "Bike to Work Week"
May 28-June 3.
Tuesday Night Racing - May 15 Recap
Sunny weather, strong racer turnout, great race committee & rescue
team volunteer support-someone forgot to invite the wind. Add to that
a high slack tide condition and nothing was moving on the briny without
paddle or oar-we were all dressed up with no place to go. Previous Tuesday
too much wind, this past Tuesday no wind, next Tuesday the odds are
on our side.
Launch Dolly Rant
Last Tuesday evening a member came up to me and said there were no monohull
launch dollies to be had. After jogging through our four and a half
acre compound I found 10 of our 17 monohull launch dollies stored under
boats. These launch dollies are the property of the JSCA for the use
of all members for LAUNCHING not for storage. Please respect our facilities
and be considerate of your fellow members.
