Jericho Sailing Centre “in the wind” XXXVI- April 26, 2007
Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what’s “in the wind”, coming events and items of interest at
the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for
April 26-May 2, 2007 and beyond:
Wash Your Boat Weekend – This Saturday and Sunday
Improve your boatspeed, wash your boat! In an effort to beautify the
Jericho Sailing Centre compound we are, once again, providing pressure
washers, scrub brushes, buckets and soap at our main aisle hosing stations
this weekend from 1000H-1600H. The long range forecast calls for a mixed
bag of sun and cloud-perfect for scrubbing the green bits from your
happy hull. It’s also a good time to tweak your equipment, replace that
old tarp and cut the grass under your boat….
Get Wet! Rescue Volunteers Wanted-No Experience Required!
Fifteen members have signed on for the Jericho Rescue Team training
course this weekend. We will be out and about on the bay this weekend
training and looking for some practice rescue victims-if you are a Hobie
or a Laser sailor and can help us out on Sunday between 1300H-1430H
please let me know via reply email.
Be Inspired, Stay Dry at the Wind & Water Art Show Sunday

April 28 Windline Repair – we need as many as 4 volunteers to help us
lower and rehoist the anemometer cup mast so that we can replace the
cable run.
April 29 Boat Moving – we are starting to remove unpaid boats out of
their spots to make way for paid craft and require some muscle.
SOS 2007 May 12 – JSCA Season Opening Sailpast – Gaining Stature!
“This is an important tradition linking us to history as sailors generally,
and as members of Jericho Sailing Centre in particular.”
JSCA Member, Louise Hooley has written an article on the importance
of Sailpasts which we’ve posted
in it’s entirety on our website. Thanks to Louise for that and for providing
me with the following tidbit of information:
“The Sail Past dates back to the earliest beginnings of naval traditions.
In fact, one of the earliest references to Sail Past is in the famous
Greek poem, The Iliad: "After two years of preparation, the Greek
fleet, of more than 1,000 ships and an army of 100,000 men, assembled
at the port of Aulis, in northeastern Greece, for a Sail Past of Troy."
It is believed that from this ceremony came the famous saying: Helen
of Troy had the face that launched 1,000 ships.”
JSCA President, Brian Key- how many “ships” will your face launch this
year?
The SOS is important to you to ensure that all of your ocean excursions
this season are blessed with favourable weather. It is an important
part of the Jericho Boat Show OPEN HOUSE as it gives our visiting landlubbers
an opportunity to see the Jericho Sailing Centre in action.
Jericho Members-sail, paddle, windsurf, row, whatever you like to do
here, come out and do it on Saturday, May 12 between 1300H and 1500H
.
Sailing Dinghies 1300H-1330H;
Windsurfers 1330H-1400H;

Jericho Boat Show OPEN HOUSE Saturday May 12
The annual Jericho Boat Show Open House on Saturday, May 12 is from
Noon-1600H. Bring your landlubber friends, co-workers, neighbours and
relatives down to the Centre on that day to check out all of the ocean
access opportunities available to them. Our schools, clubs and fleets
will be on hand with sign-up information and displays. Check out our
Season Opening Sailpast which this year will include a Stand Paddling
Race and a salute to sailing canoes.
Flights of Spring Regatta Recap
3 races Saturday in slight winds, 7 races Sunday in slightly better,
and the 2007 Sailing Dinghy Racing season is underway at the Jericho
Sailing Centre. Tight racing in both fleets resulted in Jacek Suski
prevailing over Peter Wall in the Lasers, while Tim Murphy and Lynn
Raymond just made it over the Wall’s, edging out Guy and Marie by 1
point in the Tasar class. For complete Regatta results and upcoming
schedule, duck over to the “Racing” section of our website www.jsca.bc.ca
Many thanks to our most excellent volunteer crew Ashley Ford, Chris
Stairs, Jim Quinn, Fred Wu, Nikita Chatwin, and Tegan Peacock who supported
our fine staff PRO Rory “7 races on Sunday” Johnston.

Laptop Donation? Second Call
Our racing programs would very much benefit from receiving your old,
antiquated laptop (not too antiquated-we now know that a 486 won’t do,
thanks anyway Catherine!) that you don’t know what to do with. Please
contact us if we can free up some storage space at your place.
Fair winds,
Mike
