In the Wind, September 1, 2006 Ahoy JSCA Members: Here is what’s “in the wind”, coming events and items of interest at Vancouver’s ocean access community centre for the week of August 31-September 6, 2006: Summer Officially Continues Until September 21 Don’t let the Labour Day Weekend fool you, summer isn’t over until Thursday, September 21. There is no cliff on the Tuesday following Labour Day, no climactic edge of the world that your boat will sail over plunging you into a deep abyss. Some of the best boating weather in Vancouver comes in September and yet for many Jericho members Labour Day is a mystical cut off point where they stow their gear for the winter and count the days until snow falls on the mountains. There are still three solid weeks of summer left in your Jericho style boating season and after that….. I hear we’re in for a spectacular Indian Summer. Volunteer Workparty—Saturday 1000H-1500H The bin is in; we need volunteers to assist with our Compound Clean-up and the ongoing Battle of the Blackberries. Safety Tips If you encounter someone in peril on the ocean who asks for assistance you are obligated to help - that is the rule of the sea. The zip lock bag has revolutionized safety and rescue on the ocean in small craft-simply insert a fully charged cell phone, seal, and dial *311 if you need the Coast Guard. Have a safe week!
