The BIG Event: UBC REC Day of the Longboat  September 28 & 29
Three thousand years ago the original human inhabitants of this Jericho area flexed their paddles and launched their canoes from this pre-Vancouver, pre-Pacific, shoreline into the Salish Sea. It was a cornerstone of their culture. This weekend more than 3,500 participants will plunge their paddles into the sea, in the 2019 UBC REC "Day of the Longboat" -as the millenniums old Salish/Vancouver-ish tradition continues.

The Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver's Ocean Community Centre, has hosted the UBC "Day of the Longboat" for more than thirty years and we welcome everyone to come view this spectator friendly, ocean playground, community event on September 28 & 29 (0800-1700H). You will witness an invigoratingly unique, very large, slightly loud, Salish Sea, celebration of the paddle; our soul connection to Vancouver's most ancient community. Your ocean spirit, will be lifted.

To get a taste of what Day of the Longboat is all about check out this video produced by UBC REC of the 2014 Day of the Longboat.

We have a few more boats than usual stuffed into our compound between now and the end of the weekend. If your craft has become less accessible due to temporary storage, please let the Jericho office know and we'll be glad to help you out.

SAFETY NOTICE: Keep a Sharp Lookout When Leaving and Approaching Shore During Day of the Longboat this Weekend
The Day of the Longboat takes place this Saturday and Sunday between 0800-1700H. The 8-boat heats will start from the Jericho Sailing Centre shore between ramps #2 & #3 every 5 minutes or so and return to the shore between ramps #1 & #2 after completing their 2 km round trip to and from Jerry's Cove east of the Jericho Sailing Centre. It is important to pay close attention when launching and approaching the shore to ensure you don't become an unfortunate part of the race excitement. Members of the Jericho Rescue Team will be stationed on the shore and on the water to assist anyone launching a craft or returning to shore. Please heed their advice and be extra vigilant when transiting the area.

Ecomarine: End of An Era, yes; but Paddling Programs at Jericho Will Continue
Two weeks ago we shared the unexpected news that Ecomarine Products LTD, the operator of the ocean kayaking school at the Jericho Sailing Centre, filed for bankruptcy ending a 26 year paddling odyssey at Jericho.

We heard back from many people who shared happy stories of their paddling beginnings and adventures with Ecomarine. Many spoke fondly of the talented and passionate instructors who launched them on a trek which could last a lifetime. We heard from several former Ecomarine instructors and staff who worked at the Jericho Sailing Centre kayaking school over the last 26 summers and although messages shared a common thread of melancholy, everyone still wanted to know when the liquidation sale is going to be so they can get good bargains on new paddling gear. There will be a liquidation sale at the former Ecomarine Granville Island location sometime in October. We'll likely hear the date at a creditors meeting on October 1 and share it in our October 2 newsletter.

The Ecomarine chapter of the Jericho Sailing Centre's kayaking school has ended but our school has taught over 2,500 paddlers a year for some time now. A new chapter is being written for 2020 and beyond, and the Jericho Sailing Centre will continue to be the best place in Vancouver to learn to paddle for decades to come.

Share your memories of Ecomarine at Jericho. If you have photos and/or memories of learning to kayak at Jericho, please send them to us and we may include in a future newsletter.

Thanks to Jericho Rescue Team member, Douw Steyn for sending this us this picture of Rob Macdonald and his Currach rowing crew taken last Saturday. Rob built his boat based on the traditional Irish design; a wooden frame covered by tarred canvas. Rob is out most weekends sharing his Currach rowing passion.
