BREAKING NEWS: End of An Era - Ecomarine Files for Bankruptcy
We've just been informed that Ecomarine Products LTD, the operator of the ocean kayaking school at the Jericho Sailing Centre, has filed for bankruptcy today; it is the end of a paddling era in Vancouver.

In 1992 an old windsurfing acquaintance of mine, Chris Ladner, who had at the time recently purchased Ecomarine from the business founder, approached me with a proposal to operate an ocean kayaking school at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Having witnessed the strong growth of kayaking over my first 4 years at Jericho I took it to the JSCA Board of the day and was promptly turned down with the rationale that paddlers would get in the way of all the sailors. (sailors not fond of paddles; something they were forced to use whenever the wind died). The following year I approached the new board with the exact same proposal and they approved; one of the best decisions the JSCA ever made.

Between 1993 and now more than 50,000 people have learned to kayak safely on the ocean through Ecomarine's school at the Jericho Sailing Centre, helping to create and propel keen interest in paddling spinoffs here such as outrigger canoes, surf skis and SUP as well.

Chris Ladner sold the business in 2017 and while the kayaking school at Jericho continued to prosper, the retail shop at Granville Island foundered over the past two years, resulting in today's bankruptcy filing. Our thoughts go out to all of the Ecomarine staff who are suddenly out of work, many of whom have taught lessons at the Jericho Sailing Centre, and all of the customers and suppliers who may have been adversely affected by this closure. Anyone who has been left up the creek without a paddle can contact me via return email and I will put you in touch with the Receiver. We should know in a week or two how the Receiver will dispose of the company's assets and will share that info. This may be a good opportunity to pick up a deal on paddling equipment at a liquidation sale.

The Jericho Sailing Centre Association is committed to navigating a course to ensure that kayaking lesson, rental and season pass programs are available to members and the public by the Spring of 2020.
