This Saturday: Celebration of Light Fireworks over English Bay
The annual Celebration of Light fireworks competition commences this Saturday over English Bay. If fireworks turn you on, "Celebration" is a perfect accent to three Vancouver mid-summer night eves right in the sweet spot of summer. The fireworks are best viewed from English Bay Beach. Kits Beach offers a next best view with Jericho accommodating the cheap seats - distant view but easier parking and disembarking when the show ends. Seating at the Jericho Patio and Grill is tough to find after 2030H. The rooftop deck will be open to members & their accompanying guests (60 maximum) with security in place to enforce no alcohol or smoking/vaping. The three show dates are July 27, 31 & August 3; Start time 2200H.
For more information on the Celebration of Light fire up their website at:

SAFETY NOTICE: CoL Fireworks = Extreme Marine Hazard
One of the most dangerous situations for operators of small water craft in Vancouver occurs at the conclusion of each Celebration of Light fireworks show. Hundreds of powerboats are hastily heading for home in all different directions and the sea surface is filled with crossing boat chop on waves. Lights from boats and downtown reflect everywhere and a kayak, canoe, rowboat or other small vessel is almost impossible to see, even if the power vessel Skipper hasn't been drinking, and in some cases, he has.
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association advises our members and other small, naturally powered craft users to not put themselves in this vulnerable position. If you choose to be out there, please ensure you are displaying the proper navigational lights and remember that the Coast Guard and other safety boats will have their hands full and may not even be able to locate your craft within the boating frenzy if you need them. Also remember, that you the Skipper, as always, are solely responsible for your safety and that of your crew.

UPDATE:
Maiden Voyage Nearing Vancouver
Over the past two weeks we've informed "in the wind" readers about Jericho Rescue Team member, Theresa Riedl's, once in a lifetime voyage from Honolulu to Vancouver on the 58' sailing yacht "Maiden".
"Maiden" made history in 1989/1990 as the first all-female crewed vessel in the

Whitbread Round the World yacht race. "Maiden" is now on another round the world campaign, this time to raise awareness for women in sailing, women's education, and women's empowerment. The yacht is crewed by some of the top female sailors in the world plus 3 or 4 "mile builders" (females with a passion for sailing who show they can benefit from this experience) such as Theresa. As "Maiden" approaches Vancouver (expected  to arrive mid-day this Saturday) Theresa shared her thoughts in the following blog:

Position
N 47° 02.170 W 131° 05.666
Boat Speed 9.2 kn
Wind direction West
Wind Speed 11 kn
Sea State: slight
Distance to Vancouver: 380 nm

I write this blog entry on the evening of a beautiful day of spinnaker sailing. I can see land on the chart plotter at the nav station, and it's not any land but the land I call home. Although the thought of sailing into Vancouver makes me very excited as I will have completed my first ocean crossing and am really looking forward to seeing my friends and family, it also means that this incredible journey is coming to an end.

Before I left people asked me if they think I'll get tired of being out at sea for so long, if I'll get sick of seeing nothing but blue for weeks, and if I'm scared of being out there in the middle of the ocean. The truth is I was scared before I left. The day before leaving I woke up in a panic of "oh my god, what am I doing, I am crazy" and thoughts of "what if something happens out there" went through my mind. But that's the thing about chasing your dreams, you will feel really scared at times, but you got to push beyond the fear, that's where the real magic happens.

For the answer of whether I am sick of being at sea? The answer is a big fat no! In fact, I've grown to love the ocean even more (which may be hard to believe for the people who know me). As I flew into Hawaii on the six hour flight over the Pacific I stared down at the ocean I will soon be sailing across and thought, "holy sh**t it's really big"! But the funny thing is when you're actually down there sailing across it, it doesn't seem so big and scary (at least I think so). It's quite the opposite actually. Being out here for days on end, seeing no land at all is really incredibly beautiful! I also feel like I've gotten to know the ocean better than ever. All of its moods, from angry stormy swells, to beautiful blue sky downwind spinnaker sailing, to early morning fog with an ocean as flat as a lake; Its power is its beauty.

Of course, I am looking forward to certain aspects of being back on land such as sleeping in a bed that's not tilted on an angle so hard that you may fall out because the boat is heeled over so much. Or going to the toilet without needing to hang onto the walls otherwise you may be thrown head first into the wall, again because of the boats heel. But you adapt to all that stuff. What I will miss is everything else though. The sunset sails, the team dinners, the marine wildlife that has greeted us throughout, night sails under starry skies, and just being out here in the big blue with these amazing women sailors who are all so passionate and knowledgeable.

To anyone whose got a dream (especially the young girls out there), keep on chasing it even if it seems farfetched. There will be times when it feels impossible, but keep pushing, learning, applying to things, networking, and things will happen!

"Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire".

Very excited to see you so soon Vancouver!

-Theresa

Saturday: Jericho Welcomes Maiden to Vancouver - Jump in Your Craft & Join in!
The 58' round the world racing yacht Maiden arrives in Vancouver this Saturday, July 27. While not currently engaged in a race, she is completing the Honolulu to Vancouver leg of a round the world campaign to raise awareness for women in sailing, women's education and women's empowerment. Her all female crew includes Jericho Rescue Team member, Theresa Riedl. While the time is conditional on the winds between Victoria and Vancouver, we anticipate Maiden will round Point Grey sometime between 0930H and 1130H* Saturday. We hope to have a flotilla of sailing dinghies, kayaks, canoes, windsurfers, SUP's, rowboats, etc on the water welcoming Maiden and her crew. The Jericho Rescue boats and Albatross will meet her near the Point Grey Bell Bouy. We expect her route to bring her close to the Jericho Pier before she heads through the First Narrows to her berth at the Coal Harbour Marina. Please come out to help us welcome Maiden to Vancouver.

* We are in contact with Maiden's shore support crew and will update her expected arrival time on the Jericho Sailing Centre's Facebook page.
SAFETY NOTICE: Bee Aware Wasps May Be Nesting In Your Boat!
Around this time every summer the JSCA receives reports of wasps nesting under boat covers or even within our members boats. In one case our member had no idea his boat was infested until after his sailing session when he took his hull plug out and was confronted with an angry cloud of seasick wasps. Quite a buzz. Bee alert and make it part of your regular pre-launch check. If you discover a nest in your boat or see a stream of wasps coming and going from your neighbouring craft please let our office crew know and we'll send our "wasp whisperers" out to tame them so that no one gets hurt.

NO SWIMMING @ Jericho Sailing Centre
For the past 45 years this has been Vancouver's only public beach designated for the launch of small, naturally powered craft: sailing dinghies, rowboats, windsurfers, canoes, kayaks, etc., and swimming is strictly prohibited.
Vancouver has some of the best swimming beaches of any city in the world, however, the stretch of Jericho Beach in front of the Jericho Sailing Centre is NOT one of them.

Beach Notice - Launch Dollies

Please be considerate of your fellow users of the Jericho Sailing Centre by returning launch dollies to the inside of the fence.
Agony of de Feet
We'd like to remind people to wear footwear in and around the Jericho Sailing Centre. Although it is tempting to go barefoot at the beach foot injuries are quite common from natural objects: barnacle bites, broken shells, sharp rocks. There are also plenty of foreign objects such as sharp bits of metal, fibreglass or broken glass.
Efficient Launch Ramp Use

Please be considerate of your fellow users of the Jericho Sailing Centre. Our launch ramps are not for rigging, boat polishing, applying sunscreen, parking bikes, sitting, eating lunch or boat/trailer maintenance. They are for launching and retrieval only. Don't move onto the ramp until you are actually ready to launch/retrieve your boat. Your efficient use of the launch ramps will be most appreciated by those waiting in line.
