On Water: Vancouver's Non-motorized Watercraft Strategy

Jericho Wavechaser Paddle Series - This Thursday @ 1900H
 
The Jericho Wavechaser is a 10 race series running every second Thursday from April 26 to Aug 30 off the beaches of the Jericho Sailing Centre.  The races are open to all levels of paddlers in outrigger, SUP, surfski, and kayak.   
 
Courses vary depending on conditions, each race night has a short and a long course. Race entry is just $10, and for Jericho Sailing Centre members it's $5!  Post race nosh and beverages upstairs at The Galley Patio & Grill where racers will receive Galley Specials on race night, catch the sunset from the best patio in the city!
 
We've got great sponsors providing all kinds of swag and prizes.  We're stoked to have Ecomarine Paddlesport Centres on board to help run the races this year, and check out our sponsor page to see what else we've got in store! 
 
Registration opens at 6pm on race nights.  Race is at 7pm with a mass start.  Prizes and results upstairs in the Jericho Sailing Centre members' lounge after the last paddler is off the water .
   
 
 
***This week there will be a UAV (drone) filming our Jericho Wavechaser event. Transport Canada regulations require us to have every participant sign a waiver allowing the UAV to come less than 100 feet from them and allowing themselves to be filmed. The UAV is not permitted to fly directly over anyone and will not get close enough to hamper or affect anyone's paddling. If you are uncomfortable and do not wish the UAV to come within 100' of you, please let the folks at registration know and we will ensure it gives you a wide berth. Having said all that, we expect to have some awesome images to show everyone in the Sailor's Lounge following the race.

Interested in trying sail racing? There is no better way to improve your sailing skill. We'll help you navigate through all the rules and prepare you to jump into our regular Sunday Racing event at 1230H. 
Anyone interested in learning to race is encouraged to sign up for the Rookie Racing Seminar on June 24 @ 1000H. RSVP Jericho Office by June 23.

JUST DUETS

We welcome JUST DUETS back to the Jericho stage as the feature act on June 12.  Many years ago they found their voice on our open stage.  Their early influences included masterful duets such as Ian & Sylvia Tyson, Tim & Molly O'Brien, and Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings.  But over time they have developed their own vocal blend and a repertoire that is more broadly researched.  Their 2016 CD release  "Rivers & Creeks"  followed a 2007 release called  "Get On Board".  Both these projects reflect their choice of a repertoire consisting of songs of  life and love that reflect a commitment to social justice, to Canadian roots, and to poetry in song.  Just good songs, just well done, just as simple as that.
 
Doors open 7:00 with a Fiddle Tunes Session.
Sing along and Open Stage at 7:30.  
The Feature Act plays a first set at about 8:10.  After that we take have a break in the stage presentation for another Fiddle Session followed by more Singing and Open Stage.  The Feature Act plays a second set starting about 9:00

English Bay Safety Seminar-The Evolution of Water Safety - June 18 
Not long after the invention of the first boat, thought to be about 900,000 years ago, came the first concept of water safety. Experience can be a stern master and as human beings evolved at the helm they learned valuable lessons, often in the hardest of ways. Every capsize and grounding, every ship wreck and sea disaster, brought more knowledge that, when shared, ensured boating could be a safer and more enjoyable experience.
 
There are many contributing factors which can lead up to incidents and accidents on the water. Through 9000 centuries of experience most of them are known and easily preventable. Every year the Jericho Rescue Team provides assistance to over 200 mariners on the waters in the vicinity of the Jericho Sailing Centre. Often when people are in distress on the water they were simply missing one or two important nuggets of water safety information that could have helped prevent their predicament.
 
The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play while on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of "sea disasters" over the past 44 years.
 
Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar June 4 & 18, July 16. Join a Jericho Sailing Centre Affiliated Club

One of the best ways to enjoy recreational ocean access on Vancouver's largest playground is to join one of the community based clubs based out of the Jericho Sailing Centre. These low cost, not for profit, volunteer driven organizations provide a wide variety of boat access and training programs for dinghy sailing, paddling, windsurfing, SUP and rowing programs as well as social opportunities. Pay Parking Now in Effect @ Jericho (Please note new provider)
Pay Parking will be in effect in Jericho Beach Park from April 1 through October 31. Hourly rates will be $3.25; daily rates will be $11.
There is a new provider for parking passes called Honk Mobile thru which season passes can be purchased for $87
To apply for a parking pass

Please follow the above link to register your vehicle. Please note that you will not be issued a hangar tag as your vehicle licence plate number will be registered into the database when you fill out the online application. The registration process creates a Honk Mobile account. You will be asked to provide your vehicle licence plate number along with payment information. Once this has been inputed - your parking receipt will be emailed to you.
 

June Service Hours @ Jericho

The Jericho Galley Patio and Grill will be open weekends at 1000H - Sunset, and weekdays 1130H-Sunset.

 

The JSCA Office will be open everyday 0930-2100H.

Cold Water Recreation

Here are some things they must know about recreating in an ocean environment:


Appropriate Attire - Dress for Cold Water Immersion

The water temperature is well below the level where it is safe to recreate without a proper (no shorties) wetsuit or drysuit. People who get into serious trouble at this time of year have often made the mistake of dressing for the air temperature not the water temperature, which is fine until something goes wrong and they suddenly find themselves immersed in the water.

 

Use Your Head
Significant heat loss is through your head. When you consider that hypothermia is the most significant danger experienced ocean recreationalists face and a neoprene cowling cost $15 at MEC, you don't need a calculator to do the math. A wool toque or hat will also work quite well.

 

Always Stay with Your Craft
When a sailing dinghy, windsurfer or kayak capsizes they are usually within a couple of swim strokes of their crew. Some craft, particularly SUP's and surf skis, require a safety leash (in good condition and properly attached) as they can easily get away in a capsize situation. Never leave your craft in an emergency situation as it is far easier to spot than a person in the water.


Use the Buddy System

Always sail, paddle, row with someone else, especially in cold water conditions. Let a reliable friend or relative know when and where you are going and when you expect to return. Diligently contact them upon your safe return. If you are launching from Jericho Beach stop in at the JSCA office to let us know when and where you are going and when you expect to return.


Be Aware of Sunset

Be aware of when sunset is and don't be out beyond it. If something goes wrong for you: equipment failure; changing conditions; fatigue, etc., you are very difficult to find in the dark. Make sure your safety float plan includes plenty of time to get off of the water before sunset.
 
SAFETY is Your Responsibility
On the ocean there are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience. 
It is every member's responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road when on or near the water. Here are some key rules which every Jericho member must know and practice.

0.5 IT IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO AVOID A COLLISION 
1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water.
2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack.
10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is prohibited and is particularly dangerous for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the bottom of launching ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended periods of time
Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe environment. Membership in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent on members knowing and observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
