Jericho Rescue Team members were taking first aid training in the Surf and Turf room of the Jericho Sailing Centre on May 7, 1991. Someone had accidentally left their handheld marine VHF radio on which abruptly interrupted our exercise when a squawking Mayday call came over Channel 16. It took a moment for us to process that the Mayday call was actually originating from the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station, having heard them respond to so many Maydays in the past. When they described the nature of their distress as a fire, we collectively looked out of the east facing windows and saw the early stages of the dark black creosote filled cloud (above) rising up over the city like Godzilla.
Jericho Marks, JSCA's aluminum boat, was on the water north of Jericho and was one of the first vessels to respond to the Mayday. The fire happened at the most inopportune time for Vancouver as CoV had just sold and delivered their fire boat to San Fransisco and had not yet taken delivery of the two new fire boats. Later that afternoon the Vancouver Fire Chief contacted me to say they would require the use of our boat and operator for a few more hours to get firefighters and their hoses in under the large wooden wharf structure. On that day, a quarter of a century ago, Jericho Marks was Vancouver's only active fire boat.

Weekly Sunday Racing Starts This Weekend
|
The first Sunday Racing event of the season starts this Sunday @ 1230H. Sunday racing occurs weekly on every non-regatta Sunday through to September 4. Our weekly Tuesday Nite Racing program started May 3 and continues every Tuesday at 1815H through to September 6.
Racers are reminded that all competitors must be properly dressed for cold water conditions and that early season racing is not necessarily recommended for inexperienced sailors. Anyone interested in learning to race is encouraged to sign up for the Rookie Racing Seminar on June 26 @ 0930H.

Canadian Olympic Sailing Team Members @ Jericho May 8

After Sunday Racing this weekend join Canadian Nacra 17 Olympic Team members Nikola Girke and Luke Ramsay for a Q&A session at the Jericho Sailing Centre 1600H-1700H.
The 2016 Rio Olympics bound sailors will interactively discuss race prep, strategies, Olympics, and other stuff racers can relate to. They are actively fundraising to raise funds for the last few months of training and equipment requirements, so attendees are asked to donate a minimum of $20 each at the event.

Racers Please Register! Registration Changes
|
If you are racing in any Jericho series event, please register. When you register your name will show in the race results, and you will be included in the series results. To register online, go to jracing.org and follow the links.
Sailors can register for one event, a date range, or the whole season. If you always sail the same boat, please register for the season. Paddlers have to register separately for each Wavechaser Paddle Series event.
Sailors can register after an event by clicking a "Register" button in the event results, beside their sail number. To edit a registration, use the "Add or remove a competitor" button below the results.
Please try to avoid creating duplicate names when you register. If you enter "Jim Clark" when you meant "Jim Clarke", this will create a new person in the scoring system. Please check the drop down list of names before you type in a new name. If you are registering someone else, please be sure you have their correct name.
The system will now look for similar sounding names (e.g. Clark and Clarke). If you enter a name that is similar to another name in the system, it will ask you which name you want to use. Please choose the correct name!
Unfortunately, the system won't catch all similar names, and it definitely won't know that M Smith, Mick Smith, Mike Smith and Michael Smith are probably all the same person. So please, once you have registered, be careful not to register again with a different name. If you find you are registered with more than one name, please delete the registrations with names you don't want to use, and replace them using the name you do want.

Rika Ruebsaat & Jon Bartlett on Tuesday May 10
For almost forty years Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat have been singing songs made by working people, the prospectors, miners, loggers and settlers of early BC. Their published works include 7 CDs and a book of homespun poetry: Dead Horse on the Tulameen: Settler Verse from BC's Similkameen Valley. Their most recent CD is "Now It's Called Princeton: Songs and Poems from the Upper Similkameen." The founders of the annual Princeton Traditional Music Festival, Jon & Rika have been involved in every aspect of folk music - singing, collecting, publishing, educating, producing radio programs, and organizing folk music societies.

Ocean Safety Bulletin - Dress for Cold Water Immersion
| Yesterday Jericho Rescue assisted the crews of two capsized sailing dinghies who were inappropriately dressed for cold water immersion. In the first instance, 3 sailors on an overturned Laser II were only wearing shorts and T-shirts. Had they gone unnoticed for much longer there could have been extremely serious consequences. In the second situation, the sailors were each wearing wetsuit farmer johns which proved to be inadequate protection once they had capsized. In both of these situations, the effects of cold water immersion played a role in the crews inability to right their craft. Even though air temperatures have been unseasonably warm, always dress appropriately for cold water immersion.

Jericho Sailing Centre OPEN HOUSE May 14 Noon-1600H
The annual Jericho Sailing Centre OPEN HOUSE is on Saturday, May 14 from Noon-1600H. Bring your landlubber friends, co-workers, neighbours and relatives down to the Centre on that day to check out all of the ocean access opportunities available to them. Our schools, clubs and fleets will be on hand with sign-up information and displays, the Jericho Rescue Team and Vancouver Lifeguard Society will be doing rescue demonstrations, there will be plenty of activity on the water and guests will receive member discounts on purchases in the Galley Patio & Grill.
Jericho Sailing Centre - SOS - Season Opening Sailpast May 14 1300H
The first sail past launched from Jericho Beach may have taken place almost three thousand years ago when original inhabitants of this area set their canoes into the Salish sea and left their village behind to discover, hunt, trade and/or pillage. The next sail past from Jericho Beach will be on Saturday, May 14, 2016. All JSCA members are invited to join in as we carry on this longstanding tradition. Sail, paddle, windsurf, row, SUP - whatever you like to do here, come out and do it on Saturday, May 14 at 1300H.

 Salish Sea Coastal Rowing Club is the newest member to the Jericho Sailing Centre; a club for rowers, by rowers! You've probably seen the EuroDiffusion Quad against the fence at the North end of the compound and thought ; this would be wonderful!'.

Pay Parking is now in effect in Jericho Beach Park through October 31. Hourly rates are $3.25; daily rates are $11. Season parking passes are available through EasyPark for $83.

Cold Water Recreation |
There are many people, particularly Stand Up Paddlers, launching from Jericho Beach these days who are new to cold water ocean recreation. Here are some things they must know about:
Appropriate Attire - Dress for Cold Water Immersion
The water temperature is well below the level where it is safe to recreate without a proper (no shorties) wetsuit or drysuit. People who get into serious trouble at this time of year have often made the mistake of dressing for the air temperature not the water temperature, which is fine until something goes wrong and they suddenly find themselves immersed in the water.
Use Your Head
Significant heat loss is through your head. When you consider that hypothermia is the most significant danger experienced ocean recreationalists face and a neoprene cowling cost $15 at MEC, you don't need a calculator to do the math. A wool toque or hat will also work quite well.
Always Stay with Your Craft
When a sailing dinghy, windsurfer or kayak capsizes they are usually within a couple of swim strokes of their crew. Some craft, particularly SUP's and surf skis, require a safety leash (in good condition and properly attached) as they can easily get away in a capsize situation. Never leave your craft in an emergency situation as it is far easier to spot than a person in the water.
Use the Buddy System
Always sail, paddle, row with someone else, especially in cold water conditions. Let a reliable friend or relative know when and where you are going and when you expect to return. Diligently contact them upon your safe return. If you are launching from Jericho Beach stop in at the JSCA office to let us know when and where you are going and when you expect to return.
Be Aware of Sunset
Recently, JSCA staff have witnessed people launching within a few minutes of sunset. This is a dangerous practice. If something goes wrong for you: equipment failure; changing conditions; fatigue, etc., you are very difficult to find in the dark. Make sure your safety float plan includes plenty of time to get off of the water before sunset.
