Tune up for the Vancouver SUP Challenge @ Jericho Wavechaser Paddle Series - This Thursday
|
The Jericho Wavechaser takes place out of the Jericho Sailing Centre off the Spanish Bank beaches of Vancouver's south shore.
The race series is run by volunteers from Jericho's paddling community and is only $5 for all paddling classes - no charge for members of the Jericho Sailing Centre Association (annual membership $99). There is a fantastic after race BBQ available to all participants for $5.
More and more paddlers are discovering how fun the waters off Jericho can be and what an amazing venue the centre is. There is also something about the beach atmosphere that makes the location feel like the Hawaii of Canada. We will have a safety boat at each race and we keep the race course a surprise! Actually, we try to optimize each race to take advantage of the best bumps we can get.
The 2015 Jericho Wavechaser Paddle Series is held on every 2nd Thursday with the next one scheduled for August 13. For more info paddle over to the Wavechaser webpage.
Volunteer Crew Wanted: To help with scorekeeping, photography & BBQ.

Jericho Rescue Busy on a Rare Windy Tuesday Eve
|
|
| | Haakon & Peter slalom their tow through flying windsurfers |
What if we held a race and no one showed up? Discretion was the better part of valour on Tuesday, Aug.11 as strong westerly winds gusted over 30 knots in the evening and kept many well seasoned sailor's on shore, preferring to preserve their equipment rather than join in on the carnage of some of the vessels that ventured out. It's not unusual for our summer Tuesday Nite Racing program to be cancelled due to wind conditions-but usually that means NO wind.
Jericho's Safety/Racing Officer Mike Wang did a tremendous job conducting our on water crew to set up a race course that held fast in the gnarly conditions, but it ended up just being a successful high wind exercise for the Jericho Rescue Team who assisted 15 people off the water through the course of the afternoon and evening. Many thanks to all of our Jericho Rescue Team members who came out and managed to keep all 3 of our rescue boats busy.

English Bay Spill vs. Kitsilano Coast Guard Station Open Letter to DFO Minister Gail Shea
|
 August 11, 2015
Gail Shea Minister for Fisheries and Oceans Parliamentary Office House of Commons Room 107, Confederation Building Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 Dear Minister Shea:
The recently released Independent Review of the M/V Marathassa Fuel Oil Spill Environmental Response Operation in English Bay generated several constructive recommendations intended to improve the overall response to similar incidents in the Vancouver area in the future. Some of the items identified in the recommendations could be expediently supported by reopening the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station.
The station was closed in 2013 apparently without the Canadian Coast Guard's full understanding of how it could have provided a quick environmental response to incidents such as the April 8/9, 2015 spill which occurred in English Bay. Properly trained crew, a Pollution Response Vessel and enough spill containment equipment to surround a ship could be on the scene of any of Vancouver's anchorages within minutes if the station is reactivated.
The Kitsilano Coast Guard Station has been well used in the past as an Incident Command Post and an Emergency Operations Centre; items found to be lacking in the review. The now vacant building, was purpose built as a Coast Guard Station exceeding local seismic standards so that it could provide an emergency response even in the wake of a major earthquake. The station is strategically located within Canada's busiest marine area, within sight of the ferry route which forms the only marine portion of the Trans Canada Highway. The reopening of the station will enhance public safety, help protect Vancouver's marine environment and ensure the ongoing smooth operation of the Port.
On behalf of Vancouver's ocean community I join others in respectfully asking that you reopen the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station immediately.
Fair winds,
Mike Cotter, General Manager Jericho Sailing Centre Association

We encourage all users of Vancouver's marine playground/workplace/highway to send an email to DFO Minister Gail Shea supporting re-opening the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station.

English Bay Safety Seminar August 17
|
The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of potential "sea disasters" over the past 41 years.
Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar August 17 at 1900H RSVP JSCA office.

Vancouver Water Restrictions- NO Boat Washing
Rainwater Now Available for Light Rinsing
|
Metro Vancouver has activated Stage 3 of the Water Shortage Response Plan. Boat washing from the city source is PROHIBITED and the JSCA is asking all users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to comply. HOWEVER; the JSCA has started to collect rainwater and encourages users to rinse their craft, particularly parts that are vulnerable to sand and salt corrosion. Going forward the JSCA is looking at ways to get our boat washing stations "off the grid" by collecting, storing and utilizing rainwater. Our Planning and Operations Committee will be considering ways and means of doing this and we invite all members to join in on the conversation. Next Planning meeting is Sept 29 at 1900H.

Boats Must Be Stored in Proper Locations
| |
Please ensure your craft is stored in the correct location. All rack craft decals must match the number of the storage space. Lately, we have detected several craft stored in the wrong space. If you are returning your craft and find someone else in your space please ask the office to assist you and refrain from just putting your boat in a convenient vacant space, which tends to cause a chain reaction affecting multiple craft.
