This Weekend: Jericho Classic Regatta

The pinnacle of sailing dinghy racing each year at the Jericho Sailing Centre is the Jericho Classic Regatta which takes place this weekend. A longtime fixture on the sailing dinghy regatta circuit in the Pacific Northwest, the Classic draws racers from throughout BC and Washington State.

Registration takes place Saturday morning in the Sailor's Lounge between 1000H-1200H. Skippers Meeting will be held at 1200H with racing commencing at 1300H precisely. The last race will be completed by 1600H and dinner will be served at 1700H. Sunday's racing will commence at 1200H.

The entry fee is $35 for single-handed boats and $60 for double-handed boats. Additional dinner tickets are available at registration for $15. Our regular Sunday Racing Program will not be conducted on regatta weekends.

This Thursday: Jericho Wavechaser Paddle Series

The Jericho Wavechaser takes place out of the Jericho Sailing Centre off the Spanish Bank beaches of Vancouver's south shore.

The race series is run by volunteers from Jericho's paddling community and is only $5 for all paddling classes - no charge for members of the Jericho Sailing Centre Association (annual membership $99). There is a fantastic after race BBQ available to all participants for $5.

More and more paddlers are discovering how fun the waters off Jericho can be and what an amazing venue the centre is. There is also something about the beach atmosphere that makes the location feel like the Hawaii of Canada. We will have a safety boat at each race and we keep the race course a surprise! Actually, we try to optimize each race to take advantage of the best bumps we can get.

The 2015 Jericho Wavechaser Paddle Series is held on every 2nd Thursday with the next one scheduled for June 4. For more info paddle over to the Wavechaser webpage.

English Bay Safety Seminar                          Next One June 22

The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of potential "sea disasters" over the past 41 years.

Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar June 22, July 20 or August 17. All times at 1900H RSVP JSCA office.

Vancouver's Shared Ocean

Marine highway,  economic life perserver, bountiful food harvest, recreational playground, and delicate ecological zone: Vancouver's ocean is many things to many people. This week the Globe and Mail took a good look at shipping in and out of Port Metro Vancouver; well worth the time for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of this side of our sea.

English Bay Spill vs Kitsilano Coast Guard Station Update

Liberal Leader, and former Jericho Sailing Centre sailing student, Justin Trudeau attended a press conference last Friday in North Vancouver with former Kitsilano Coast Guard Station Commander Fred Moxey where he reaffirmed his party's committment to re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station if they form the next government after the October 19 federal election. NDP Leader Thomas Mulclair has made the same committment. So far, Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government has ignored local calls to re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard station despite it's 50 year history as Canada's busiest lifesaving station, and it's strategic location and capability to deal with pollution spills such as the one that occurred over two days on April 8 & 9, 2015 in a more timely fashion. Closing the station in 2013 saved an estimated $700K annually.

This Pollution Response Vessel PRV, (photographed at the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station in 2012) was part of the pollution spill response program at the station which included enough spill boom to surround a large ship and crews trained in spill response.

The Canadian Coast Guard Commissioner has stated that the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station had no pollution response capability and would not have made a difference in the April 8 & 9 spill in English Bay. Former officers and crew from the station have said that this is false and that this spill could have been contained very quickly had the station remained open.

No Tires Permitted at Jericho

Prior to 2009 most ground storage boats at Jericho were stored on old tires and the mosquito population exceeded one billion. As West Nile virus began spreading into western Canada the JSCA began a 2 year program to rid the Jericho compound of all tires. At the time we thought there might be as many as 1,000 tires in the compound. By the end of the campaign, in cooperation with the BC Tire Stewardship program over 1,800 tires had been removed from the compound leaving mosquitos with few places to breed here. Lately, we've noticed a few tires sneaking into the compound and we ask all members to be aware that they are not permitted here and, when discovered, must be removed at the owner's expense. There are recycled foam blocks available for storing member boats on. Please enquire at the JSCA office. Thank you for your cooperation.

JUNE 9
The Little Mountain Trio rocks. Besides their great playing on bass, guitar and mandolin and beyond the deft three-part harmonies, and not counting the infinite variety of the band's repertoire, it's the slick and twisted musical arrangements that most tickle your ears and make you smile. Kitty King, Dave Lidstone and Rob McGregor perform musical magic on a mix of original compositions, blues, jazz and country classics.

Safety Notice: Be Aware of Large Ship Movements

Users of the Jericho Sailing Centre and everyone who recreates in English Bay should to be aware of large ships and their movements through the shipping lane in the north part of the inlet as well as to and from anchorages.

The photo here shows the black smoke emitted when a ship starts her engines. This is a sign that the ship is preparing to pull up her anchor and move to the shipping lane. Here are a few ship horn signals you should be aware of:

One short blast: I am altering my course to starboard

Two short blasts: I am altering my course to port

Three short blasts: I am operating a stern propulsion.

Five short blasts: I am in doubt about your action taken to avoid a collision.

If you hear 5 short blasts, the master and pilot on the ship are trying to tell you that they are concerned with the course and speed you are following. You should at the very least make your intentions obvious, allow sufficient searoom for the ship's safe passage, and preferably open the distance between yourself and the large vessel by moving away as quickly as possible.
