Join us for the Legendary Homolsom Rock Run This Thursday June 19 | |
For thousands of years people have paddled the ocean around Point Grey and legend has it that SW of the Point is a great rock full of powerful good medicine which was once the Tyee/god of the West Wind. The paddling ancestors named it Homolsom Rock and according to the legend, those who touch the stone with their blade will always have the wind in their favour when returning home. On June 19, the longest Thursday of the year, we welcome Vancouver's paddling community to join the Wavechaser Paddle Series as the Jericho Sailing Centre rekindles the legend. Choose from the 5km course up the Point Grey coast around the green algae coloured race mark, or take on the full blown journey of the paddling ancestors, a 15km round trip to Homolsom Rock, just off Wreck Beach, returning with the wind at your pleasure to Jericho.
Wavechaser Paddle Series races are held every 2nd Thursday (between the Big Chops) starting at 7pm. Registration can be done in person at the Jericho Sailing Centre office anytime between 9:30- 6:45 on race day or online @ http://jracing.org/ . The entrance fee is $5 or free for JSCA Members (new members welcome $96 annual membership). There will be a short course and a long course each evening accompanied by a safety boat, with video replay and paddle pros onhand in the Sailor's Lounge after racing. Many thanks to our event sponsors for providing ample draw prizes.

SATURDAY: Navy League of Canada Regatta |
Sea Cadet Squadrons from all over British Columbia will conduct a reverse amphibious re-invasion of the Jericho Sailing Centre on Saturday, June 21 for the 2014 Navy League Regatta. Built as a military facility, recycled for peaceful purpose, the former Jericho Beach Air Station always welcomes our reconnection to Canadian Forces personnel and their ilk. The Navy League of Canada was established in 1895 to promote an interest in Maritime Affairs generally throughout Canada. The Navy League works to preserve Canada's maritime legacy, passing it on to future generations so that they may continue to realize the vast potential of our oceans, lakes and rivers and the critical role they play to our national well-being. The Navy League of Canada has a presence in over 260 Canadian communities providing youth programs that benefit 15,000 young Canadians every year. FREE - English Bay Safety Seminar Next One June 23 |
The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre
to help keep them safe at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of potential "sea disasters" over the past 40 years.
Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar June 23, July 21 or August 18. All times at 1900H RSVP JSCA office.

July 5 - Wake & Cake:
Come Celebrate Jericho Sailing Centre's 40th Anniversary |

Live music, balloons, clowns, a BBQ, cake and wake: the Jericho Sailing Centre is celebrating 40 years as Vancouver's ocean community centre on Saturday, July 5, 2014; 1100-1730H; and everyone is invited to this family friendly, face painting, ice cream eating, wave lapping, ocean festival.
Prior to 1974 there was no such thing as a community centre dedicated to low cost ocean recreation in small, naturally powered craft; in Vancouver, or anywhere. As DND Base Jericho Beach was being demolished and Jericho Beach Park was evolving through the concrete cracks, a small group of passionate dinghy sailors shared their ocean community, non-taxpayer funded, vision with the city to save the former Jericho Beach Air Station's Marine Building from the wrecking ball. The City thought it a good idea at the time and since then, many thousands of people each year have enjoyed the Jericho Sailing Centre.
 | |
In the early days, no ramps made low ride retrievals more of a social bonding exercise. |
Climb onboard for live music, balloons & BBQ at 1100H in the Jericho Sailing Centre's plaza/picnic area just east of the main building. Check out sailing, paddling and rowing programs available through the Jericho Sailing Centre and see all the activity on the sea. We'll start cutting cake and drawing prizes at 1300H including airfares from Harbour Air and gift cards from MEC. Then we'll hear from special guests including Point Grey MP Joyce Murray and Jericho's Park Board Commissioner Liaison Trevor Loke. Vancouver Park Board Commissioner Constance Barnes will also attend. Her father, former MLA Emory Barnes, was quick to recognize that a low cost ocean community centre may have a future in a city named after a sailor, and was a featured dignitary at the official launch of the Jericho Sailing Centre 40 years ago. Jericho's own, Disabled Sailing Association Founder, former Vancouver Mayor, and current MLA Sam Sullivan will be among our honoured guests to dedicate one of 2 new Jericho Rescue boats purchased with the assistance of a Provincial Gaming Grant. The music and seaside community atmosphere plays on until 1730H.

Looking east during Habitat '76. The original wharf came to our main ramp. The steel rails still embedded in the concrete by the current Windsure hut were for the massive doors to the hanger shown here. |
