Summer in September |
The month of September is seventy-five percent summer. Despite that, many members traditionally go into maritime hibernation following the Labour Day weekend-but wait, don't put that boat away just yet. September is often one of the best months for ocean activity in Vancouver. The transition of seasons from summer to fall brings a bountiful harvest of wind over the bounding main. Water and air often maintain their summer composure, temperature wise, and although twilight progressively dwindles down to the shortest straw of summer days, there is still time to slip in a quick session on the briny between the end of toiling for dollars and the end of useful daylight.
The Jericho Sailing Centre will be busy, supporting 11 on water event days this September including the largest of our 80+ events each year: the 3,500 participant UBC Rec "Day of the Longboat". Also on our event calendar is the Tasar BC's regatta (Sept. 7 & 8), and the UBC Invitational Regatta (14 & 15). During the last few weeks of summer, and the first few weeks of Fall, Jericho Sailing Centre's schools will be busy teaching ocean kayaking, dinghy sailing and windsurfing to hundreds of Grade 11 & 12 Community Recreation students from high schools all over Metro Vancouver.
When the summer of 2013 officially takes it's final bow on September 22nd don't be surprised if it's followed by a curtain call with an Indian Summer providing more great water recreation conditions well into October.

Jericho Sailing Centre's PRO Connection to America's Cup 34 |
 
2013 America's Cup 34 Principal Race Officer, John Craig, has fond memories of the Jericho Sailing Centre and Vancouver. A former CYA Team Coach who was based in BC Sailing's office at Jericho (in the current Disabled Sailing Association office) way back in the nineteen hundreds: John met, sailor eye wooed, then brashly married our Administrative Assistant of the day, Despina Paskalidis: A scoundrel & a rogue. John logged plenty of PRO time (between frequent Jericho office visits) on our race committee boat Albatross before absconding with our treasured crew member in 2000 to become the Race Manager of San Francisco's St. Francis Yacht Club, one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the USA.

Regardless, the state of the art twin hulled race committee boat John PRO's on for America's Cup 34, is about as far removed from Jericho's Albatross as the AC 72's being used for the regatta are to the 1960's designed Laser's so popular at Jericho and around the world. She is a 65 foot, mark, pin & flag setting power yacht; a "Houston Control," computer screen arrayed, horn honking floating communications hub, designed to accommodate the pinnacle of sail race management for the highest performance, most expensive sail racing machines ever created. From his omniscient Captain Kirk chair, high above the poop deck of Regardless, John continuously monitors the wind and ocean currents in San Francisco Bay with meticulously measured accuracy, determines mark sets with satellite pin point precision, and tracks high speed multi-hull competitors with military grade GPS to within 2 cm-nobody gets away with starting early on John's watch. Albatross doesn't even have a head. It is, however, twin hulled.

The PRO's job at AC34 is much more than simply controlling nature and making certain all the racing rules are strictly adhered to under the passionately attentive eyes of competing billionaire backed syndicates. Beyond ensuring these naturally powered cutting edge technology vessels enjoy the fairest of fair fields of play in the fantastically billowing setting of San Francisco Bay, John is responsible for the safety of the top notch professional sailors crewing these water borne, slipstream fueled space craft. Heap on the glaring spotlight of unprecedented worldwide media coverage, the tradition of more than a century and a half of the Stanley Cup of sailing; the expectant eyes of the, sometimes eccentric, sailing world looking over his shoulder; It all makes for an immensely heavy albatross hanging around the PRO's neck - but hey, no pressure for a guy from Vancouver who used to hang around Albatross.
As with any team competition the officials are not the stars of the event. The AC 72's have demonstrated, in competition that they are capable of achieving 47knots of boat speed in only 19 knots of breeze. Hold your hand out the car window on the highway and imagine how much sustainable energy a 260 square metre wing designed using NASA quality technology mounted on an engineered carbon fibre Pacific Ocean rocket ship might generate. The articulating wing "mainsail" milks the abundant flow of fresh San Francisco Bay true wind to produce turbo charged apparent wind; the underwater foils drastically reduce the coefficient of drag on the wetted surface, fewer heavy water molecules attached and dragging things down etc., generating ever more apparent wind- blah, blah; Google the science, they go very, very fast, very efficiently.
 It may make sailing purists more ornery than usual; but over history, progressive sailing technology introduced since 1851 though the America's Cup has eventually trickled down to the Jo Blow recreational sailor level. It's fairly safe to say it'll be quite a while before we see articulating foils and water wings at the Jericho Sailing Centre, but in time we will; we are instinctively driven to always get better at harnessing nature's power ; wind and sea easily inspire imagination.
Though America's Cup 34 PRO John Craig left the Jericho Sailing Centre, smiling in his wake, many years ago, whilst rope swinging and swashbuckling away our finest crew; we wish him the very best of luck and hope for him to achieve the ultimate goal set by every great, anonymously distinguished referee, umpire or watery field judge: that we don't hear his name mentioned, or see his un-smiling mug, too much, during the course of the event: regardless, of the outcome.

Stand Up Paddlers from all over the world came to
Vancouver to stir up the big soup in the 2013 Vancouver SUP Challenge on Saturday, August 24.
 2013 Kayak 4 a Cure August 25
Dozens of paddlers participated in the 2013 Kayak 4 a Cure on Sunday, August 25. Paddlers of all abilities stoked together from Jericho Sailing Centre to Third Beach and back in the Vancouver edition of this national annual fundraiser to support cancer research.

UBC Sailing Club Open Regatta September 14 & 15 |
The 2013 UBC Sailing Club Open Regatta will be held on Saturday Sept. 14, through
Sunday Sept. 15. The event is open to any Formula 18 as defined by the International Formula 18 Association.
Additional classes with 5 or more registered boats will also be provided with separate starts at

We will conduct our last Sunday Racing of the season in harmony with this regatta.

Trimming for Daylight - September Hours |
The Jericho Galley Patio and Grill will be open 0900H-Sunset on weekends and 1100H-Sunset on weekdays, weather permitting, through to the end of September.
Ecomarine Ocean Kayak Centre @ Jericho will be open weekends 0900H - Dusk; and, 1000H- Dusk on weekdays - weather depending, through September 15. RSVP recommended.
Windsure Aventure Sports will be open weekends 0900H-Dusk; and, 1000H-Dusk on weekdays; weather depending, through September 30. RSVP recommended.
MacSailing will be open weekends 0900-1800H; and weekdays 1200-1800H weather depending - RSVP recommended.
The JSCA Office will be open 0930H-2000H 7 days a week through September 15; then 0930-1930H through September 30; regardless of the weather. |

Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up September 22 |
The JSCA is hosting the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up for the section of Jericho Beach directly in front of the Jericho Sailing Centre as well as the "new" beach just east of us, on Sunday September 22 at 1100H. We will have a tent and registration tables at the NE corner of our compound by the Ecomarine Ocean Kayaking concession. Vancouver Festival of Ocean Films: Tidelines |
On September 24th, the Vancouver Festival of Ocean Films and the Vancouver Aquarium are very please to present the world premiere of the documentary "Tide Lines" in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. As a part of this very special evening, the crew will be on hand for a presentation prior to the screening as well as for questions afterward.
"Tide Lines" follows two local B.C. brothers and a friend as they set sail from Mexico with a dream to circumnavigate the world and surf. Over the course of the next three years, their lives would change dramatically through the beaches they visited, the people they met and a newfound sense of global community through the oceans. Tide Lines is the true story of Ryan, Bryson and Hugh on a sailboat called "Khulula" and their inspiring voyage across the sea in search of adventure, plastic awareness and education.
Now in its twentieth year, the clean-up has seen over 57,000 Canadians participate in the cleaning of over 1800 sites across Canada in 2012. Since its inception, the clean-up has resulted in the collection of over 1,000,000 kgs of garbage!

Day of the Longboat Clinic Weekend September 21 & 22

UBC Rec's "signature event", The Day of the Longboat, comes to the Jericho Sailing Centre on the last 2 weekends of September. The event is open to the public and 10 person teams may register in various categories up until September 18. There will be a trophy for the top JSCA team.
The 3,500 participant event has been reformatted this year to include finals in each category on the same day which will effectively makes it a one day event for successful crews, rather than a full weekend. For more info and to register pull over to: Day of the Longboat |

Program Tweaking - A NEW Way to Register for Jericho Series Racing |
Racing in the Jericho Tuesday and Sunday Series is into the final leg, and the overall Series results are available online at jracing.org. If you raced, please make sure you are registered for each event you sailed in, so all your results are included.
If you always sail the same boat, you can register once for the whole season. But if you sail club or co-op owned boats, you may not have registered each time you raced. There is a new function available that should help.
You can now select a boat, see all the events it raced in, and who registered as a competitor. Anyone who raced that boat in an event, but isn't shown as a competitor, can be added, and anyone who is shown when they shouldn't be can be removed. If there is someone in a club who knows who sailed each boat during the season, they could use this function to make any necessary changes.
As before, you can also register by going to an event, selecting a class, and adding or removing competitors for your boat. Or you can use the original registration process, which works best if you usually sail the same boat throughout the season. All three methods are available online at jracing.org. Richard |

 Aspiring young sailors can learn to race with the MacSailing Youth Race Team. The Team will train in the fall and spring and compete in regattas around Vancouver.
Ages 11-14 in Optimists; ages14-18 in Lasers; and, ages 13-18 in double handed 420's.

The Jericho Sailing Centre Association Planning Committee welcomes all members to attend the 2013 Annual Planning Forum on September 24 at 1900H. We'll be taking a look at opportunities for the future of the Jericho Sailing Centre for next year and beyond. Please plan to attend and bring your ideas for improving the Jericho Sailing Centre. Tuesday October 22 at 1900H
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association's 40th Annual General Meeting will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 1900H in the English Bay Room of the Jericho Sailing Centre, 1300 Discovery Street, Vancouver, B.C. The 2012/2013 J.S.C.A. Board and Committees will report on their accomplishments this past year and the challenges for the future. Please plan to attend and participate in the future direction of your ocean access community centre.
Call for Nominations
Voting will take place to elect eight members for a two-year term, and one member to a 1 year term to our 15 member Board of Directors. The J.S.C.A. Board meets once a month to set policy and determine Jericho's direction. Interested members who have time and expertise to offer are invited to submit a letter indicating their experience and areas of interest to the J.S.C.A. Nominations Committee c/o the Jericho office no later than 1700H, Tuesday, October 8. The signed nomination letter must include your name, address and telephone number. After 27 years of exceptional service to the members of the Jericho Sailing Centre Association, our Groundskeeper, Ross Risby has had to leave the Jericho Sailing Centre staff for health reasons.
Ross's always sunny disposition, hard work ethic and witty "Rossisms" ("If you don't put food in your belly, you get hungry." & "Water is wet!") will be sorely missed around Jericho and we all wish him well as he navigates into the next chapter of his life.
In 1993, Ross's quick and decisive action saved the Jericho Sailing Centre building from possibly burning to the ground after discovering a fire embedded in the roof above our sprinkler and detection system.
Ross's financial prospects for the future are seriously challenged by his health so the JSCA has started a special fund to help him and we encouage members to make a donation through the JSCA office.
To date members have donated in excess of $4,500 to Ross. Thank you and please keep the donations coming. |

Remember that sound carries on the wind, so if the wind is heavy, don't waste your energy trying to gain the attention of those far to windward of you if there are other options. If you choose not to own one of our cool new Jericho Fox 40 whistles, do not use an old hockey, or other whistle with a pea, as salt water immersions will turn your pea into non-acoustical soup. |
