Open Water Regatta for Human Powered Vessels - Everyone Welcome

A quarter century ago the Simon Fraser Sailing Club was going down. The rats had all hastily left the floundering vessel in the reluctant hands of a befuddled, disorganized, riff raffish crew suddenly faced with the  prospect of having invested their hard earned recreational dollars in a rapidly sinking, "no fun" fund: they'd been Odysseusly fleeced. From among them John Wyndham stepped forward on sturdy sea legs; negotiated with the University for ownership of the motley fleet, held creditors (including the JSCA) at bay, re-constituted under a new name, appealed to a nervous membership base, attracted new members and performed a most unlikely organizational rescue that has evolved into one of the best ocean sports clubs in Vancouver, and maybe, anywhere: ClubLocarno.
  

 With, now ancient mariner, Commodore Wyndham then filling their sails, ClubLocarno was the first club at Jericho to boldly cross the wind line, where no sailing club had gone before, to add kayaks to their fleet, in the early nineteen nineties- a most excellent Plan B for no wind sailing days. The Club spirit for thinking outside of the blocks continued when, with the encouragement of current Commodore Jennifer Weterings, ClubLocarno added open ocean rowing to their leisure service mix in 2002. Then, they became the first club at the Jericho Sailing Centre to add high performance catamarans to their by then ample sailing dinghy quiver. They followed that up by adding high performance paddling programs for their members on Surf Skis. Any guess who was the first club at Jericho to add SUP?

 This Saturday ClubLocarno is celebrating their 25th Anniversary by welcoming everyone to their 4th Annual Open-Water FUN Regatta followed by a "Happy 25th ClubLocarno" BBQ. The open water regatta welcomes all people-powered craft, and features both a long-distance 10K race and a short-distance 5K race. There are plenty of participant draw prizes. UBC Sailing Club Hanger Party                                                    August 17

 UBC Sailing presents a Fundraiser for Ross Risby in the JSCA hanger - Saturday August 17th - 8:00 PM to 2:00 PM

 

Featuring live music from the Spencer Teeter Band, and cool tunes from DJ Deezel, it's sure to be the hottest party all summer.

 

Enjoy Howe Sound Brewing Co. beer, our famous sangria, and delicious burgers.

 

100% of all proceeds donated to help longtime JSCA Groundskeeper Ross Risby in his retirement.

English Bay Safety Seminar - August 19

The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of "sea disasters" over the past 39 years.

  Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar on August 19 at 1900H RSVP JSCA office.

 Aspiring young sailors can learn to race with the MacSailing Youth Race Team. The Team will train in the fall and spring and compete in regattas around Vancouver.

 

Ages 11-14 in Optimists; ages14-18 in Lasers; and, ages 13-18 in double handed 420's.

Bon Voyage and Thank You Ross!

 

"Water is wet!"

After 27 years of exceptional service to the members of the Jericho Sailing Centre Association, our Groundskeeper, Ross Risby has had to leave the Jericho Sailing Centre staff for health reasons.

 

Ross's always sunny disposition, hard work ethic and witty "Rossisms" ("If you don't put food in your belly, you get hungry." & "Water is wet!") will be sorely missed around Jericho and we all wish him well as he navigates into the next chapter of his life.

 

In 1993, Ross's quick and decisive action saved the Jericho Sailing Centre building from possibly burning to the ground after discovering a fire embedded in the roof above our sprinkler and detection system.

 

 

Ross's financial prospects for the future are seriously challenged by his health so the JSCA has started a special fund to help him and we encouage members to make a donation through the JSCA office.

 

To date members have donated in excess of $3,500 to Ross. Thank you and please keep the donations coming.

RACE REGISTRATION NOTICE -July 31

Race registration made easier

There is a new, and I hope easier, way to register for Sunday and Tuesday racing. It is intended for everyone who sails different boats (club or coop owned), or crews on different boats, over the course of the season.

There is a new link at the bottom of all the Sunday and Tuesday results at jracing.org : "add or remove a registration for this event". Click on that link, login, and you will see a slightly different view of the results, with buttons for adding or removing competitors.

I hope it is obvious how it works, but note that any changes you make using the buttons will change a registration for ONE event (series, day and class) ONLY. You can't change the RESULT for a boat - just who was sailing it.

If you add a registration, it is for one day only. If you sail on another day, in this boat or a different one, you will have to register again. You can do this for as many different days, classes and boats as you need to. What you WON'T have to do is enter the boat or date information - this is done for you when you click 'Add competitor".

If you remove a registration, you are removing it for that day only. So, if you registered for the default dates (January 1 to December 31) and you delete a registration using the "remove competitor" button, you are still registered for the whole year EXCEPT for that day (and any other days you remove). Removing a registration does not remove a person's name from the drop down list of registered competitors. If you remove someone by mistake, you can use the "add competitor" button to put them back.

The original registration process (using the link from the home page) is still available, and is the best way to register if you usually sail the same boat. You can use the new method to make a few changes to that registration over the course of the season (e.g. if someone replaces your regular crew on a few days).

By the way, for obvious reasons you can't add or remove competitors for regattas, like the Jericho Classic, for which event registration is required.

Weekly Safety Tip - Running Out of Gas: Evening Wind Shut Off

  As the sun sets a couple of minutes earlier each day (2029H this evening), we'd like to remind sailor's and windsurfers that your fuel (wind) typically runs dry in the hour preceeding sunset. Sailors: remember your paddle(s) and don't sail further away from Jericho than you would want to have to paddle back.

All craft launching out of Jericho are required by law to have a sound signalling device on board. The easiest way to meet this requirement is to attach a whistle to your PFD. The Jericho Sailing Centre Association office is now selling the new, flattie "Fox 40 Whistle-World's Most Advanced Pealess Whistle"-in your choice of 5 fashion colours complete with Jericho logo, for only $6. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever own and the aerodynamic design is guaranteed to improve your boat speed.

 

In a distress situation blow your whistle multiple (7+) times in short sharp bursts to gain the attention of others. Remember that sound carries on the wind, so if the wind is heavy, don't waste your energy trying to gain the attention of those far to windward of you if there are other options. If you choose not to own one of our cool new Jericho Fox 40 whistles, do not use an old hockey, or other whistle with a pea, as salt water immersions will turn your pea into non-acoustical soup.

Jericho Sailing Centre Etiquette 
 

Common sense and consideration of fellow members and other users help make the Jericho Sailing Centre a true community centre with a friendly salt water community atmosphere. Here are a few etiquette reminders to keep things sailing along smoothly:

 

  • No Alcohol is permitted within the Jericho Sailing Centre other than that served by the Jericho Galley Patio & Grill or by a duly authorized affiliated club with a Special Occasion Permit. At no time is alcohol permitted outside of a licensed area.                   
  • Do not leave your craft unattended on the shoreline for extended periods - share the shore.                          
  • RAMPS, and the areas adjacent to launching ramps, are for craft launch/retrieval only. Do not rig, repair or otherwise loiter in this area.
  • Do not leave or rig your craft in the rinsing areas adjacent to hosing stations. 
  • The Jericho Sailing Centre is a SMOKE FREE facility. There is No Smoking permitted in any Vancouver Park or beach area.
  • Give pathway users the right of way and bear in mind they may be distracted and not aware that you are crossing the pathway with your craft or launch rope.
  • launch dollys are for launching/retrieval only (not for storage) and must be returned to the fence immediately after use.
  • if you launch from your own dolly or trailer return it to your storage spot after launching-do not leave dollys on the beach.
  • do not use the winches unless you are familiar with their safe operation. Winch instruction is available from staff or Jericho Rescue Team members. Only members or registered guests may use winches & dollies.
  • only leashed, well behaved dogs are allowed in the compound, no dogs are allowed in the building or on the deck. Do not tie dogs to the base of stairwells or in other traffic areas. Do not leave your dog onshore while you are on the water. The City prohibits dogs on beaches. In consideration of other Jericho users please consider leaving your dog at home while visiting the Jericho Sailing Centre.
  • Please coil hoses immediately after use and conserve water.
  • Do not block aisle ways.
  • Rinse racks are for rinsing not drying.
  • Swimming is prohibited in front of the Jericho Sailing Centre.
  
SAFETY is Your Responsibility
On the ocean there are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience. 

 
It is every member's responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road when on or near the water. Here are some key rules which every Jericho member must know and practice.

0.5 IT IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO AVOID A COLLISION 
1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water.
2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack.
10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is prohibited and is particularly dangerous for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the bottom of launching ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended periods of time
Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe environment. Membership in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent on members knowing and observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
