Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Public Meeting

Wednesday, December 7,  6-8pm  West Point Grey Community Centre

The Jericho Beach Restoration Phase 2 Public Meeting will take place on Wednesday, December 7 from 6-8pm in the Oak Room of the West Point Grey Community Centre (located on the south side of Marine Drive across from the Discovery Street entrance to Jericho Park).

A sneak peek at the concept revealed a well thought out and naturally balanced seaside park design which easily facilitates small craft entry to and from the sea and could end up being the best paddling beach in Vancouver.  We encourage all users of the Jericho Sailing Centre and other interested paddlers, rowers and SUPers to attend the meeting, learn more about the proposed design and support it.

If the design is received favourably by the public, work will commence early in the new year and should be substantially complete in the spring.

In order for this to become the best paddling beach in Vancouver the Board of Parks and Recreation must officially designate it for such use in a separate process. More on this in future editions of "in the wind".

Donate to the Disabled Sailing Association Floating Dock Fund

Are you considering making a charitable donation this year? Did you know that the first Disabled Sailing programin Canada started righthere at the Jericho Sailing Centre? It is now one of 30 in our country and the only one without an accessiblefloating dock facility? In 2011, the Disabled Sailing Association of BC (DSA) launched close to900 sailsfrom the Jericho Sailing Centre but many more people were left on shore due to theinaccessibility of ramp-launched craft at lower tides. An accessible floating dock facility would effectively increase DSA's capacity by 50% allowing more people to escape their earthly bonds and experience the freedom of sailing over the sea.

The Disabled Sailing Association has set up a designated fund to assist with financing a new dock facility. It is now possible for people to make donations and receive charitable receipts via the DSA website at www.disabledsailingbc.org
. Click "Donate Now through Canada Helps" andunder "Fund/Designation" click "Jericho Floating Dock Project."  A charitable tax receipt will be sent via email. For more information you can contact Duane Geddes at the Disability Foundation (604)688-6464, ext. 103.

Compound Water Shut Stations Winterized

As our facility has evolved from the RCAF Jericho Beach Air Station, much of the Jericho Sailing Centre's compound water system is at or near the ground surface to avoid costly trenching through concrete. Below freezing temperatures last week initiated our annual winterization which includes flushing the system dry and shutting off the water main for the next few months.

In the meantime, the water hosing station on the SE corner of the building is insulated and operational throughout the winter.

Winterize Your Boat

Every "off season" vicious wind storms rip through the Jericho Sailing Centre compound looking for loose tarps, boat covers and poorly stowed gear. When they find a loose tarp they can turn a docile hibernating boat into a flying projectile which can cause damage to neighbouring craft. Members are responsible for ensuring they have "battened down the hatches" on their equipment stored at the Jericho Sailing Centre and checking their craft after gnarly windstorms. We encourage you to check your craft regularly year round, remove any parts or equipment that can be easily removed (most thefts occur between Oct.-April) and make sure water doesn't collect inside your hull (if it freezes and expands it can cause major damage).

Your Safety is Your Responsibility

There are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience.

It is every member's responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road when on or near the water. Here are some key rules which every Jericho member must know and practice.

1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water.
1.1 SUPers MUST use a safety leash. Also recommended for surf skis and other sit on top craft.

2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack.
10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is prohibited and is particularly dangerous for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the bottom of launching ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended periods of time
Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe environment. Membership in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent on members knowing and observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
