Jericho Beach Ecological Restoration
Park Board Responds to Nature Call | |
 Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation staff has indicated that they have heard overwhelming public support for the natural restoration of Jericho Beach and are going back to the drawing board to evolve their concept plan for the site accordingly. The new concept will also recognize safe public recreational ocean access as an important consideration. Thank you to all of the people who have participated in the public consultation process to date. The revised concept plan is expected to be presented at a public meeting sometime in May. We will continue to monitor this situation and keep Jericho Sailing Centre users informed through "in the wind".

| Transatlantic Row 2011: Jen's Big Oar-deal | |
ClubLocarno Commodore, Jennifer Weterings, rowed across the Atlantic Ocean earlier this year and after some arm twisting she's finally agreed to give an informal presentation on her odyssey in the Sailor's Lounge this Saturday, April 30 at 1300H. Here's a tidbit of things she'll be covering:
" '15 Minutes!'. It's 1:45 AM and I have barely slept and it's time to start my next shift. Struggling to identify my foulies (foul weather gear) from the sopping heap of stuff in the cabin. Then the ichy, disgusting feeling of pulling on wet gear and knowing, really it doesn't get worse than this, somehow isn't comforting. Hearing the captains call to 'stroke (rowing position)', I struggle, crawling my way along a crowded deck as Britannia III hurls and rocks in the battering of wind and waves.
The journey was 42.5 days of rowing 12 hours per day, we covered 2700 nautical miles and rowed from the Canary Islands to Barbados.
I'd like to invite you to an informal chat on this wee adventure along with some video and photos. Topics highlights include;

| No Racing This Weekend | |
There is NO racing this weekend as all hands are on deck for the Jericho Rescue Team Training Course. Regular Sunday Racing will commence on May 8 at 1230H. Weekly Tuesday Nite Racing commences on May 3 at 1815H.

| English Bay Safety Seminar This Monday, May 2 | |
The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have intervened in thousands of "sea disasters" over the past 37 years.
 Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar May 2, June 6 & 27, July 25 and August 16. All times at 1900H RSVP JSCA office.

| Experienced Kayakers Needed - NEW Program for People with Disabilities | |
 The Disabled Sailing Association is going to add kayaking as an activity at Jericho this summer. They have the use of a double-handed kayak complete with pontoons to take clients out for an hour or two in English Bay. The plan is for this pilot project is to offer four times each weekend, 1100 and 200. Clients have to book 72 hours ahead. What is needed are some experienced kayakers to help out as volunteers both in the DSA kayak and in the volunteer's kayak. The experience you have would include a course that included paddler rescue from a tipped kayak. Your assistance would be requested at least two days prior to going out. If you think you would be able to help out please call Eric Molendyk 604.688.6464 ext 117 or email eric@disabilityfoundation.org. He is compiling a list of volunteers. An information meeting of interested volunteers will be scheduled for a weekend in early June.

| Jericho Folk Club Tuesdays in the Surf & Turf |
Tuesday evenings from May 3 - September 27 are Jericho Folk Club Nights in the Surf & Turf room of the Jericho Sailing Centre. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy Celtic, singer songwriter, sea shanties, and traditional music.
May 3rd The Jocelyn Pettit Band
Jocelyn is a fiddle player with outstanding talent! Blazing new-trad Celtic fiddle with original, contemporary, and traditional music, mixed with funky rhythms and lots of groove! Music to move to, dance to, and celebrate!
May 10th Little Mountain Band
Kitty King, Dave Lidstone and Rob McGregor have played music together for about 30 years. These days they are pursuing their eclectic musical tastes with blues, Jazz and originals on acoustic bass and guitar and mandolin.

| Jericho Sailing Centre OPEN HOUSE | | The annual Jericho Boat Show Open House is on Saturday, May 14 from Noon-1600H. Bring your landlubber friends, co-workers, neighbours and relatives down to the Centre on that day to check out all of the ocean access opportunities available to them. Our schools, clubs and fleets will be on hand with sign-up information and displays, there will be plenty of activity on the water and guests will receive member discounts on purchases in the Galley Patio & Grill. |
| On the water, Safety is Your Responsibility | | A reminder to members who play on the bay at this time of year-place an extra emphasis on boat safety for yourself and your crew. Jericho Rescue and other boaters are notably scarce at this time of the year so you must take extra care to ensure a safe on water session. It starts with a check of the weather forecast and tidal activity. Let a friend or family member know you are going, where you are going and when you expect to be back on shore (follow-up with an après sailing phone call). Do a meticulous pre-launch check of your craft and equipment. Recognize when conditions are beyond your ability and choose not to launch. Make sure you are properly dressed-wetsuit/drysuit/hat/booties/gloves-including your PFD. Double check your safety equipment-paddles, bailer, whistle, flares. Know when the sun is setting and understand that the wind often shuts off abruptly in the hour before sunset. Don't go farther from shore than you care to paddle back if you or your equipment should fail or the wind shuts off.
One final tip: enclose your fully charged cell phone in two sealed sandwich bags and keep on your person. In the event of a sea disaster you can't solve yourself, dialing *311 will put you in touch with the Canadian Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination Centre. |
