June Under El Niņo's Dwindling Influence
|
While hardly qualifying as the Ancient Mariner this contributor to the JSCA's
"Sailor's Almanac", witness to several of the weather anomalies from
the perspective of the Jericho Sailing Centre, has noticed an apparent
historical trend for Vancouver Junes in the wake of El Niņo's.
Typically a wet month in the Vancouver calendar, most often
following the typically sunny, dry and breezy page of May, June, under the
influence of El Niņo, seems to swap seats with the preceding month, taking over
the helm of great spring sailing weather leaving May to flounder and wallow in its
Pacific spray.
We've just left an untypically wet May. This winter's El
Niņo's demonstrated its awesome weather flexing muscle to the world providing
an alarmingly low snow pack for the Olympics and a remarkable stretch of sunny
warm weather right on cue as the 2010 Vancouver games unfolded.
Although June
2010 is already awash with liquid sunshine at it's launch point this faithful
scribe to the Jericho Sailing Centre's "Wave Farmer's Almanac" is
going to go out on a wooden spar limb to predict that it will be an exceptional
"fair weather sailor" friendly month so make sure you keep your
calendar open for more salt water therapy sessions than usual at the Jericho
Sailing Centre.

Jericho Classic Regatta June 5 & 6
|
The 30 somethingth Annual Jericho Classic Regatta
will be held this weekend at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Lasers, Tasars, Martin
16's, Cats and others will peacefully clash in naval conflict for the glory and
the gusto on the waters of English Bay. The entry fee for single handed boats
is $30, double handers $50. Membership in CYA/BC Sailing will be required of
all participants including the crew on double handed craft. The 2010 CYA/BC
Sailing annual memberships will be available for $22 at registration
(1000H-Noon Saturday). In order to alleviate the sticker shock of the CYA
requirement for our more frugal racers there will be a $10 registration fee
discount offered for any participant not requiring a dinner ticket. For all the
details tack over to 2010 Jericho Classic NOR. |
JSCA Renews Affiliation with the Canadian Yachting
Association
| The Jericho Sailing Centre Association is once again a
member club in good standing with the Canadian Yachting Association and BC
Sailing. BC Sailing Executive Director Tine Moberg-Parker has agreed with the
JSCA's proposal that CYA/BC Sailing Memberships NOT be required for our
Sunday/Tuesday racing programs to allow us to encourage and stimulate more
beginner and novice racing activity. In return the JSCA has agreed to be
diligent in ensuring that ALL participants, including crew in double handed
craft, are members of CYA/BC Sailing. In the case of our American racing guests
a US Sailing membership will suffice. 2010 CYA/BC Sailing memberships are
available any time through the JSCA office for $22. To find out more about what BC Sailing does to support and enhance our provincial sailing community tack over to BC Sailing. To find out more about the Canadian Yachting Association sail over to CYA. |

Canadian Navy Celebrates 100 Years
|
The Canadian Navy first launched in 1910 with 2 ships, HMCS
Niobe and HMCS Rainbow, grew to more than 400 during WWII and now maintains 33
active ships and a network of support and training ships as well as a National
Sea Cadet Program. Nearly 100,000 Canadian sailors served during the Second
World War. The Canadian Navy currently numbers more than 13,000, including the
Regular Force and the Naval Reserve serving from bases at home, in war zones
such as Afghanistan, and as part of aid missions in disaster areas such as

Safety is Your Responsibility
|
There are elements of risk that common
sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to
use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed
below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience. It is every member's responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road
when on or near the water. Here are some key rules which every Jericho member
must know and practice. 1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water. 2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing
powered craft. 3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of commercial vessels. 4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a tug and it's tow. 5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel. 6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel. 7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead. 8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear. 9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack. 10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training or transiting only. 11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is prohibited and is
particularly dangerous for small children. 12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the bottom of launching
ramps. 13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far
as possible 14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving 15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended periods of time Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe environment. Membership
in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent on members knowing and
observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
