Jericho Sailing Centre OPEN HOUSE May 15

The annual Jericho Boat Show Open House is on Saturday, May 15 from Noon-1600H. Bring your landlubber friends, co-workers, neighbours and relatives down to the Centre on that day to check out all of the ocean access opportunities available to them. Our schools, clubs and fleets will be on hand with sign-up information and displays. Register for adult programs or kid's camps in ocean kayaking, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, stand-up paddling and skimboarding.

SOS Season Opening Sailpast May 15

" an important tradition linking us to history as < mariners> generally, and as members of Jericho Sailing Centre in particular."
The SOS is important to you to ensure that all of your ocean excursions this season are blessed with favourable weather. There was a skimpy turnout in 2008 and it rained on 7 out of 8 summer weekends-let's not make the same mistake again. The SOS is also an important part of the Jericho OPEN HOUSE as it gives our visiting landlubbers an opportunity to see the Jericho Sailing Centre in action.

It's Racing Season! CYA Membership Mandatory after June 1

Dinghy sailing racing every Tuesday Nite at 1815H and every non-regatta Sunday at 1230H.

This season, commencing June 1, every Jericho Racer must be a current member of the Canadian Yachting Association. The $22 CYA/BC Sailing Membership Fee goes toward the Provincial and National organizations which govern sail racing. This requirement allows the JSCA to maintain it's status as a CYA Affiliated Organization which enables us to host sanctioned regattas and use the International Sail Racing Rules in our programs.

There will be a Jericho Racers Forum immediately after Tuesday Nite Racing on May 18 to discuss this and any other issues or ideas sailors have for improving our racing programs.

CYA Olympic Sailing Team Coach, Kevin Black, will conduct 3 race coaching clinics for racers in conjunction with Tuesday Nite racing. The clinics will be held June 8, 15 and 23 starting at 1730H.

The annual Dave Thomas Coaching Clinic has been tentatively set for June 1 pending Dave's wifes permission.

Rookie Racing Seminar May 16

There is no better way to improve your sailing skills than to get out and race. Come out to the JSCA's Rookie Racing Seminar on Sunday, May 16 at 0900H. We take the legalese mumble jumble of Sail Racing Rules and explain them in the simplest barnacle brain terms. This program is free as the wind to JSCA members or $79 +GST for non-members.

Your safety, and that of your crew, is your responsibility

There are elements of risk that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience.

It is every member's responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road when on or near the water. Here are some key rules which every Jericho member must know and practice.

1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water.
2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack.
10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is prohibited and is particularly dangerous for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the bottom of launching ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended periods of time
Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe environment. Membership in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent on members knowing and observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
