From 43,000 BC-2010, Exploring Water
Safety's Missing Links
|
Not long after the invention of the first
boat, thought to be about 45,000 years ago, came the first concept of water
safety. Experience can be a stern master and as human beings evolved at the helm
they learned valuable lessons, often in the hardest of ways. Every capsize and
grounding, every ship wreck and sea disaster, brought more knowledge that ensured boating could be a
safe and enjoyable experience.
There are many contributing factors which
can lead up to incidents and accidents on the water. Through 450 centuries of
experience most of them are known and easily preventable. Every year the
Jericho Rescue Team provides assistance to over 200 mariners on the waters in
the vicinity of the Jericho Sailing Centre. Often when people are in distress on the water they were simply missing one or two important nuggets
of water safety information that could have helped prevent their predicament.
The English Bay Safety Seminarwas developed
for users of the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on the
waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water safety fundamentals along
with user specific information drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team
who have intervened in thousands of "sea disasters" over the past 36 years.
Why make your own mistakes when you can
learn from the mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make sure
your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be. Your survival may well
depend upon it. Find the missing links and fill in the gaps in your water
safety knowledge by attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar April 26, May

Earth Day in Jericho Park April 24

Celebrate nature in Vancouver
with Evergreen's 10th Annual Earth Day event in Jericho Park. Together with Fido and Jericho
Stewardship Group we invite you to join us in a day of
celebration.
Events will include an exhibitor's fair, workshops, nature
walks, music, food and First Nations festivities, as well as hands-on
restoration efforts with the Jericho Stewardship Group and

Jericho Rescue Team
Training Course April 24 & 25
|
The Jericho Rescue Team is looking for experienced sailors,
windsurfers, paddlers and rowers who are interested in developing their
seamanship and water safety skills, and are willing to volunteer to assist
their fellow boaters. The Jericho Rescue Team provides safety and rescue
support for all on-water events facilitated by the JSCA. This year our Rescue
Team members will provide rescue coverage for the over 90 on-water event days
on our 2010 events calendar. Qualified candidates can sign up for the Jericho
Rescue Team Training Course which will be conducted on April 24 & 25. We
provide training in water safety and seamanship, Boathandling, boat rescue and
first aid. Course graduates must complete ongoing Rescue Team training
including the Pleasure Craft Operators Certification, VHF Radio Licence,
emergency first aid and CPR Certification (all provided). If you are interested

SOS Season Opening
Sailpast May 15
|
Only 4 weeks to get your boat ready for the annual JSCA Sailpast on Saturday, May 15 from Noon-1400H
The SOS is important to you to ensure that all of your ocean excursions this
season are blessed with favourable weather. The SOS is also an important part of the Jericho OPEN HOUSE as it gives
our visiting landlubbers an opportunity to see the Jericho Sailing Centre in
action.
Jericho Members-sail, paddle, windsurf, row, whatever you like to do here, come
out and do it on
Saturday, May 15 between Noon and 1400H .

Jericho Sailing Centre OPEN HOUSE May 15
|
The annual Jericho Boat Show Open House on Saturday, May 15 is from Noon-1600H.
Bring your landlubber friends, co-workers, neighbours and relatives down to the
Centre on that day to check out all of the ocean access opportunities available
to them. Our schools, clubs and fleets will be on hand with sign-up information
and displays. |

Pilot Wind Turbine
Project at the Jericho Sailing Centre
|
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association, in cooperation with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, is about to launch another wind powered instrument-a wind turbine- in the NW corner of the Jericho Sailing Centre.
The Vancouver Park Board feels that the Jericho Sailing Centre is an ideal location for this alternative energy test project which, if successful, could lead to more wind turbines in city owned facilities.
The 30 foot high wind turbine is about the same height as one of our resident Hobie masts
with a 3 metre diameter propeller. The turbine will power the Jericho Sailing Centre Association's website which will provide interpretive and educational information on wind as an alternative energy source.
The project will be fully funded and
constructed by the Vancouver Park Board.

Members who wish to purchase a $75 season parking
pass for Jericho Beach Park can pick up the forms in the JSCA office or by
emailing your form request to . Pay parking is in effect from May 1- September
30, 2010.

2010 Weekly Racing Series Commence May 2
|
The JSCA's weekly racing series begin on Sunday, May 2 and run through Tuesday September 7. The Sunday Race Series are held every non-regatta Sunday at 1230H. Tuesday Nite Racing starts at 1815H and run every Tuesday evening, wind willing.

Safe Ocean Sailing- Your safety,
and that of your crew, is your responsibility
|
There are elements of risk in ocean recreation that common sense and
personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the
ocean, always respect it and show courtesy to fellow users. Please adhere to the code listed below
and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience.
It is every member's responsibility to know and observe
the rules of the road when on or near the water. Here are some key rules which
every Jericho
member must know and practice.
1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water.
2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power
craft, paddle and rowing powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear
of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a
tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a
starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel
ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel
on a tack.
10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training
or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre
is prohibited and is particularly
dangerous for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the
bottom of launching ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as
fishers cast lines as far as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when
launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended
periods of time
Common
sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe environment. Membership in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent on
members knowing and observing the Safe
Ocean Sailing rules. |
