Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for March 5-31, 2010 and beyond:
In the Wake of Vancouver 2010
Even hard bitten skeptics became teary eyed Canadian flag wavers joining the human throngs bursting with civic pride as Vancouverites embraced the Olympics more emphatically than any other host citizenry since the ancient Greeks.

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games allowed Vancouver dwellers to promote and show case our country and more specifically our home town, undeniably one of the most beautiful cities on Earth, to billions of people from all over the planet-with "hearts a glowing". (note the alteration of a segment of the Canadian national anthem which was somehow, astonishingly trademarked by games organizers - love you VANOC, you did an absolutely fantastic job and deserve everyone's complete appreciation, admiration and respect but, did you really need to take away our legal right to simply say "with glowing hearts"? It didn't end up mattering. Your team was the catalyst that helped make our hearts glow brighter than ever and you couldn't possibly have hoped, for all the mud on Cypress, to stop us from singing those words from the top of our collective lungs and rooftops with bumps in our throats and salty Vancouverite raindrops in our eyes.)
 
So where do we go from here? (A Stanley Cup Parade stroll through Stanley Park this June would be nice, eh Lou?) The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games were pitched to taxpayers as a way of raising the profile of sport, fitness, health and well being in our city, province, country. It's now up to Vancouverites (and all Canadians) to hoist our own personal torches. VANOC's pooping out, they're passing theirs along. Pick-up that javelin, dust off your discuss, ready your horses and chariots. Launch your own Vancouver 2010 Olympics motivated campaign-even if you consider yourself as ancient as Greece. Enjoy the benefits of recreation and consider environmentally friendly outdoor sports, that enhance fitness, health and well being, are good in any weather and make the most of Vancouver's unique ocean environment. Just down the sandy hill from the Jericho Sailing Centre, over the splashing moguls of English Bay, you can't help but be positively inspired and blown away by the spectacular view of British Columbia, Canada's, remarkable 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games gold mine, Cypress Bowl.
 
The JSCA kindly asks each Jericho member to Shanghai their fellow Vancouverite; be they friend, family, co-worker, neighbour , or foe; and while they are still somewhat bleary eyed and groggy  to the gills with Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games pride, get them off their day dreaming wooden podiums to sign on for dinghy sailing, windsurfing, ocean kayaking, stand up paddling or skimboarding at the Jericho Sailing Centre. They'll thank you for sharing and showing them the way to experience their own golden moments, Vancouver style.

2010 JSCA Fees Due April 1
A reminder that your 2010 JSCA Membership and Storage fees are due April 1, 2010. A late fee of $30 will apply to fees paid between April 2-30; a $60 late fee will be applied to late payments received during the month of May, and after that things go from bad to worse and your ship could end up on the craggy rocks of our annual bailiff auction. If you are planning not to store your craft at the Jericho Sailing Centre this year please ensure that you vacate by March 31 and notify the JSCA office so we may bring boats in from our waiting list. Bailiff Auction July 10.

Jericho Sailing Centre Spring Clean-Up - Volunteer Work Parties
The JSCA Board is encouraging all members to participate in the 2010 Jericho Sailing Centre Compound Beautification Project by keeping your boat and storage space ship shape and by participating with volunteer work parties in 2010 to help clean up aisle ways and other common space areas. We have a bin onsite for the next four weeks to facilitate compound clean-up; please help pitch in.

Earth Day 2010, April 24 at Jericho Park
Earth Day 2009 attracted hundreds of participants to Jericho Park and many plants were planted including a large number along the south fence of the Jericho Sailing Centre.  Plans are currently in the works for Earth Day 2010 on April 24 which will include workshops, presentations, guided tours and a beach clean-up. More information will be reported as we spin closer to that date.

Join the Jericho Rescue Team
The Jericho Rescue Team is looking for experienced sailors, windsurfers, paddlers and rowers who are interested in developing their seamanship and water safety skills, and are willing to volunteer to assist their fellow boaters. The Jericho Rescue Team provides safety and rescue support for all on-water events facilitated by the JSCA. This year our Rescue Team members will provide rescue coverage for the over 90 on-water event days on our 2010 events calendar. Qualified candidates can sign up for the Jericho Rescue Team Training Course which will be conducted on April 25 & 26. We provide training in water safety and seamanship, Boathandling, boat rescue and first aid. Course graduates must complete ongoing Rescue Team training including the Pleasure Craft Operators Certification, VHF Radio Licence, emergency first aid and CPR Certification (all provided). If you are interested please contact Benj, or Mike in the Jericho office to discuss your qualification for this program.

Gates open at 0700H and are locked at Dusk. (approx. 1800H).
On the Water, Your Safety is Your Responsibility
Although air temperatures are warmer than they've ever been at this time of year water temperature remains cold. Members who play on the bay at this time of year-place an extra emphasis on boat safety for yourself and your crew. Jericho Rescue and other boaters are notably scarce at this time of the year so you must take extra care to ensure a safe on water session. It starts with a check of the weather forecast and tidal activity. Let a friend or family member know you are going, where you are going and when you expect to be back on shore (follow-up with an après sailing phone call). Do a meticulous pre-launch check of your craft and equipment. Recognize when conditions are beyond your ability and choose not to launch. Make sure you are properly dressed-wetsuit/drysuit/hat/booties/gloves-including your PFD. Double check your safety equipment-paddles, bailer, whistle, flares. Know when the sun is setting and understand that the wind often shuts off abruptly in the hour before sunset. Don't go farther from shore than you care to paddle back if you or your equipment should fail or the wind shuts off.
One final tip: enclose your fully charged cell phone in two sealed sandwich bags and keep on your person. In the event of a sea disaster you can't solve yourself, dialing *311 will put you in touch with the Canadian Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination Centre.
