Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and
items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver's
Ocean Access Community Centre, for August 12-18, 2009
and beyond:

UBC Sailing Club - 50 Years Before the Mast
|
 A
half century ago there was little fanfare or hullabaluh
when the gold and blue colours of the University of
British Columbia ran down the north slope of Point Grey
and first launched their sailing club into the friendly
waters of English Bay.
In 1959 there was plenty of cause for optimism when
the original crew staged the first major post WWII invasion
of the waters off of Jericho just a dozen years after
the decommissioning of the Jericho Beach Air Station.
That original crew tacked, gybed and sailed as have
all of the UBC Sailing Club crews that have followed.
They broke and fixed boats, recruited and trained members
by the dozens, enjoyed and celebrated the life of sailors.
That original crew is all seventy-something now, many
of them still live a sailing life and all fondly regard
their days when they felt the wind in their faces and
the gusto in their gills during those treasured momentary
releases from the surly bonds of their studies.
Fifteen years into their 50 year odyssey the UBC Sailing
Club played a pivotal role in the creation of the Jericho
Sailing Centre and they have always been our largest,
arguably most spirited, affiliated JSCA club. Their
enthusiasm within the Jericho Sailing Centre community
has always been unbridled and infectious.
Well done UBC Sailing Club, here's to your next 50 years,
at the end of which, this year's crew will all be seventy-something.
UBC SAILING CLASSIC
& 50th BIRTHDAY PARTY ON AUGUST 15th!!
UBC Sailing is 50 years old this year! To celebrate
we are holding the biggest birthday party Jericho has
ever seen. From our 1st annual Sailing Regatta to the
Paddling Wars to the Windsurfing Smackdown, this day
will be the highlight of the year! Don't miss our Boat
Building Competition (AKA Boat Sinking Competition),
and our Multicraft Relay! There will also be opportunities
for members to try their hand at new sports - sailing,
windsurfing, and kayaking.
$10 for former UBC Sailing Club members to compete in
the events.

Between the Start & Finish Line: Women 50+ & Outrigger
Canoeing
|
 Leisure
time physical activity provides many health benefits
for people of all ages, yet among older women, only
a minority participate. When we hear about older
athletes in the media, it is often to highlight athletes
that are either of an elite skill level or in the oldest
old age category. Why do some older women make
the choice to be physically active in their leisure?
This study used focus groups with photo elicitation
to qualitatively explore the experiences of community-dwelling
women 50 and over who choose to paddle outrigger canoes.
Join Heather Bell, a PhD student at the University of
Florida for a presentation and discussion as she
shares the findings of her MA in Leisure Studies (Dalhousie)
thesis research.

World Police and Fire Games Kudos

Many thanks to all of the JSCA members, volunteers and
staff who really pulled together to make sure that the
Jericho Sailing Centre was a world class, three event
venue for the 2009 World Police & Fire Games. You folks

Boat Building Demonstration August 16-21
|
 Ever
thought of building your own boat? Brian Chandler
has been teaching people to build their own Dreamcatcher
boats for years. These ultralight, skin-on-frame
built craft are both distinctive and durable, and
according to Brian are not difficult to construct.
Interested in finding out more? Brian will be building
a Dreamcatcher boat in the Plaza of the Jericho
Sailing Centre from August 15-21. Come down, meet
Brian and check out his work in progress as it proceeds.

Notice of Annual General
Meeting
Tuesday, October 27 at 1900H
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association's 36th Annual General
Meeting will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 1900H in the English Bay
Banquet Room of the Jericho Sailing Centre, 1300 Discovery Street, Vancouver,
B.C. The 2008/2009 J.S.C.A. Board and Committees will report on their
accomplishments this past year and the challenges for the future. Please plan to attend and participate in the
future direction of your ocean access community centre.
Call for Nominations
Voting will take place to elect eight members for a two-year
term to our 15 member Board of Directors.
The J.S.C.A. Board meets once a month to set policy and determine
Jericho's direction. Interested members who have time and expertise to offer
are invited to submit a letter indicating their experience and areas of
interest to the J.S.C.A. Nominations Committee c/o the Jericho office no later
than 1700H, Tuesday, October 13. The
signed nomination letter must include your name, address and telephone

injects music into the soul of the Jericho Sailing Centre every Tuesday between

Safety is Your Responsibility - Tip
of the Week - Manual Propelling Device
|
We're not
sure what causes some sailors to tempt fate and sail in the waning twilight of
the day without a paddle: perhaps it's Darwin's
theory of the process of natural selection. However, we want everyone to get
back to shore safely and so would remind Neanderthals and geniuses alike that
the wind often shuts off abruptly within an hour of sunset at this time of year
and a paddle will help you meet Transport Canada's minimum requirement for
safety equipment on board your vessel. You can meet the minimum requirement by
substituting an anchor, fire extinguisher or bailer but try propelling your way
home with one of those. For more information on boating safety propel your
