Jericho Sailing Centre, Coolest Place in Vancouver

While inlanders and uplanders douse themselves with cold water and stand all sweaty skinny in front of oscillating fans to seek shelter from the heat, we sea level creatures of the Jericho Sailing Centre, paddling, rowing, windsurfing and dinghy sailing in a Pacific palisade of waves and natural breezes, know how to keep cool all the time, it's in our very nature.

In the middle of a record Vancouver heat wave, sun pouring down like lava, highlanders sizzle and bake, sweltering and melting, sitting in searing steel traffic jams barbequing over asphalt coals in a shimmering mirage where the Humidex dangerously flirts with hyperthermia causing tempers to boil and sauté while we, the population of "Elevation Zero", laughingly leave our signatures in the flowing script of boat wake on the eternal coolness of the sea.  Riding on the giant water park of the Pacific, hanging with gulls, seals, otters, whales and sea lions, we are collectively as cool as a sea cucumber.

In these hot dog days of summer when the land heats up throughout the city and right up through the Fraser Valley Gulch the hot air rises and sucks on the atmospheric straw of cooler marine air like a refreshing smoothie over the coastal sea. We don't really mean to rub it in. While eggs are frying on inland sidewalks, people feeling like ants disintegrating in a magnifying glass, while they scorch on their porch, we have great empathy for them and realize that part of our coolness lays not so much in the heat- it's the humility.

Is this current Vancouver heat wave simply a new weather record statistic or a sinister symptom of global warming? Who knows? One thing we know for sure is that when the heat is on there is no substitute for being cool.
SOS Jericho Laser Owners

Many thanks to all of the Jericho Laser owners who have lent the use of their boats to the World Police and Fire Games August 4-7. We are still looking for a few more complete boats to round out the fleet. The WPFG is paying $200 for the use of each boat. If you are interested in helping out those who help out others please contact the JSCA office at (604)224-4177. We are convening all the craft together this Monday, August 3.

HSBC Celebration of Light Saturday August 1 @  2200H

The inventors of gunpowder step up to the plate Saturday night as China paints a rockety fire in the Vancouver summer night sky. The show starts at 2200H. Great view from the Jericho Galley Patio and Grill as well as the Jericho Sailing Centre's rooftop deck. As always, the JSCA strongly recommends that skippers of small, naturally powered craft avoid the extremely dangerous situation that occurs when hundreds of power vessels crowded into the fireworks area suddenly disperse at the end of the show.
Jericho H20 Wear

Looking cool in the heat has never been easier than in Jericho H2O wicking wear. Technical, stylish shirts allow the wind and water to breeze through and are quick drying. Check them out in the JSCA office or on our website at http://jsca.bc.ca/store//catalog/index.php

World Police and Fire Games  @ Jericho next week
The Jericho Sailing Centre will be the hub venue for 3 2009 World Police and Fire Games events next week:

Cross Country Run Tuesday, August 4
The runs start (5 Km Run 0800H/10 Km 0830H) and finish at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Three hundred and fifty WPFG athletes will run along the Spanish Bank beach pathway and through the UBC Endowment Lands. Open Water Swim  Wednesday, August 5
The swim begins at 0800H with more than 150 WPFG athletes chewing up the water over a 3.2 kilometre course just west of the Jericho Pier. Awards Presentation 1000H.

Laser Regatta on August 5, 6 and 7.
Twenty-six WPFG sailors from across the globe will come together for a Laser regatta on Vancouver's spectacular English Bay. Many thanks to all of the members as well as MacSailing School and UBC Sailing Cub for lending your boats for this event. Racing starts at 1100H each day. Awards presentation Friday 1700H.

Important Message for Jericho Racers
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association has a unique arrangement with the Canadian Yachting Association that requires ALL of our racers to be members of the CYA. Yacht clubs and sailing clubs across Canada are required to ensure that ALL of their members are members of the CYA to maintain their status as an affiliated club. CYA affiliated club status benefits the JSCA by enabling us to host sanctioned Regattas and allowing our members to participate in other clubs sanctioned events.
Here's the rub- only six of our racers have current CYA membership and we are regularly seeing 30-40 racers participating in our FREE racing programs. We politely request that those racers who aren't current members of CYA (or US Sailing for our American members) to brush the barnacles off of your wallet and buck up your 2009 fees ($22). It would be a terrible shame for the JSCA to lose our CYA status and the members who stand to lose the most are those who race.

Racer' s Meeting Tuesday, August 4

The JSCA is looking for feedback from racers regarding our weekly racing programs to date and welcoming suggestions for improvements for the balance of the racing season. We'll meet in the Sailor's Lounge on Tuesday, August 4 following Tuesday Nite Racing. Everyone welcome.
Jericho Oceanman  August 8
The 2009 Jericho Oceanman event makes it's annual pilgrimage to the Jericho Sailing Centre on Saturday, August 8 at 1000H. Competitors will participate in a 1K swim, 6K paddle, 8K run and then a skill testing "Mystery" event cooked up in the devious mind of Oceanman creator, the salt of the sea itself, Gary Parsons. Just a warning: this year Jericho Beach Lifeguard Gary has been seen not wearing his hat for extended periods in this record Vancouver heatwave. There's no telling what the Mystery event might be!  There is still time to register for the 2009 Oceanman, just heat stroke your mouse over to www.oceanman.ca . Even if you don't participate in the Oceanman you'll still enjoy the sweet Hawaiian slide guitar sounds of "The Swagmen" throughout the afternoon.
