Send Us Your Photos!
|
We are looking for "Jericho style" photos to spice
up our website, newsletter and promote the Jericho
Sailing Centre. Please send us your photos with a
brief description.

Sue Bennett sent us this photo taken last week on
Canada Day as she contemplated launching her kayak
into a building westerly wind. An experienced paddler
Sue chose not to launch in these conditions. The winds
that day increased to 35 knots, cancelling our special
racing plans and necessitating several rescues of
folks that should've taken Sue's cue.

MEC Paddlefest 2009 Much More Than a Marginal Success
|
They
came, they saw, they paddled.
More than a thousand people flocked like lemmings to
Mountain Equipment Co-op's 2009 Paddlefest this Sunday
at the Jericho Sailing Centre. They enjoyed free kayaking
and stand-up paddling demos, clinics, seminars professionally
instructed water sessions and guided tours of English
Bay. They crowded through
the limited beach space in front of the
Jericho Sailing Centre for ocean access to Vancouver's
largest playground in an urban celebration of paddle
power.
This
large, well mannered, environmentally friendly recreational
event provided a stark dynamic contrast to the rude,
derelict 1.5 acre concrete Marginal Wharf right next
to it. While many paddled in the shadow of this decrepit,
decaying former military monolith, many
more wondered when the newly elected members of the
Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will do the
environmentally and fiscally responsible thing and remove
it, liberating a beach with a people paddling history
that goes back thousands of years.

Your Safety is Your Responsibility - No Rescue Guarantee
|
In the eight day period June 25-July 2 the Jericho
Rescue Team rescued 54 people. The sustained period
of wind included five days where the wind was in excess
of 20 knots including Canada Day where the wind came
up to thirty-five knots.
The majority of people rescued in this period were
relatively inexperienced sailors who simply did not
have the experience to recognize conditions well beyond
their skill level - hopefully, through their ordeal,
they've developed a better understanding. One thing
that every Skipper must understand is that regardless
of their level of experience they, and only they,
are responsible for their safety and that of their
crew.
