Code of the Sea - Sailor Saves Sailor

On Tuesday, June 2 , 2009 a dramatic rescue took place in English Bay that saved the life of a Jericho Sailing Centre Association  member. During the Tuesday Nite Racing program a double-handed sailing dinghy capsized and the crew became tangled in the rigging as the boat rapidly turtled trapping him under water. Despite the efforts of the skipper and the crew himself he remained trapped and soon lost consciousness.  The skipper blew a distress signal on his safety whistle* .

JSCA members Ryan Allderman and his crew Brendan Chin were sailing a Tasar nearby.  Brendan heard the signal and urged Ryan to sail to the overturned boat .  As they approached the scene the skipper shouted that his crew was trapped under the boat and Ryan dove into the water and surfaced in the air bubble of the overturned boats cockpit. He located the unconscious sailor and while the skipper raised the gunnel managed to pull him free. As Ryan struggled to hold the sailor's head above the waves the Jericho Rescue boat arrived and with the assistance of the skipper they were able to get the stricken sailor onboard.

The Jericho Rescue boat was met on shore by Vancouver Beach Lifeguards Gary Parsons (organizer of the Jericho Oceanman event) and Craig Jacks. As the guards attended the sailor he regained consciousness, was whisked into an ambulance and spent the next 3 days in hospital for observation. (standard procedure for one who aspires seawater). Our member is in good spirits and is looking forward to resuming his sailing career in the near future with the rest of his life still in front of him.

This incident clearly demonstrated the importance of the code of the sea, the obligation of all seafarers to help their fellow seafarers in distress to the best of their ability. The exceptional efforts of Ryan Allderman have earned him a nomination for a Lifesaving Society award. Brendan Chin, the skipper, members of the Jericho Rescue Team, JSCA staff and the lifeguards all played an important role in the positive outcome of this situation.

Today, the last day of National Water Safety Week, is a good time for all members of the Jericho Sailing Centre Association to reflect on their own water safety knowledge, practices and experience. If you'd like to learn more about how to keep yourself, your crew and your fellow members safe while at play on the water sign up today for the next English Bay Safety Seminar on Monday, June 22 at 1900H.

*Despite the legal requirement to have a sound signaling device and the JSCA's best efforts to educate members and other users of the Jericho Sailing Centre, it simply boggles my mind to see how many people still do not have a safety whistle on their person when out on the water. If you are one of these people, smarten up, blow 5 bucks on a Fox 40 safety whistle in the JSCA office and have it on you-it could save your life or the life of a fellow boater.

Help Conquer Cancer in Memory of Janet Westwood

Janet Westwood was an incredibly amazing volunteer for the JSCA up until 4 years ago when she lost her second battle with cancer. Janet served on our Board of Directors, Programs Committee, Chaired regattas and social events and was an all round, sailor friendly, nice person. Janet's son David, a longtime JSCA member,  is about to embark on a two day bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle as part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. The money raised goes directly to research and support service in the fight against cancer.
In David's words:
"I'm asking for a little support from all of my friends, colleagues and family to meet my goal of raising $2500. I know money is tight these days, but even a little donation will add up, help me reach my fundraising goal and make a big difference to tens of thousands of people's lives, as cancer affects us all."

Donating only takes a minute, so if you're able to give something please go to www.conquercancer.ca/goto/david.westwood

Coaches Clinic with Dave Thomas - Tuesday, June 30

Former Canadian Olympic Sailing Team Coach and MacSailing School Co-owner Dave Thomas will conduct his 3rd Annual JSCA Coaching Clinic on Tuesday, June 30. There will be a pre-race Skipper's Meeting at 1730H. First start will be 1815H. Races will be videotaped and we'll all come back to the Burrard Room for an extensive photogenic debrief and to buy the Coach beers. I don't know if the Coach was pulling my rudder but he said the only racers that would be admitted would be those who were registered and participating in the on-line Volvo Ocean Series Race( www.volvooceanracegame.org ) currently heading for Denmark.. There are more than 200,000 people virtual racing worldwide and young JSCA sailsnapper Kyle Martin is currently around 800th place while Coach Dave is Hovering around 10,000th looking for lucky windshifts and riding the Gulf Stream hoping to hook up with favourable North Atlantic Current whilst hankering for a taste of Danish cheese and an ice cold Tuborg. (Sorry Kyle, no Tuborg for you!)
