Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and
items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver's Ocean Access
Community Centre, for May 20-26, 2009 and beyond:

35th Anniversary JSCA Open House & Sail Past This Saturday!
|
The first thing every newcomer should know is that the
"Sailing" in "Jericho Sailing Centre" is literally in
the verb tense which means "travel over water in any
craft" and can include anything from a skimboard to
a B.C. Ferry. Although sailing in dinghies is
one of the anchor features of the Jericho Sailing Centre
(we are home to Canada's largest dinghy sailing school,
renowned dinghy sailing racing programs and several
fine community based, low cost sailing clubs)-the verb
"Sailing" in Jericho Sailing Centre describes so much
more. Outrigger canoeing, windsurfing, rowing, stand-up
paddling, performance paddling and kayaking are all
vital components of the Jericho Sailing Centre's curriculum-
in short, low cost, naturally powered ocean "sailing"
fun.
Welcoming newcomers is one of this Saturday's main themes
as the Jericho Sailing Centre invites the public to
join us as we celebrate the "official" launch of the
2009 season at our 35th Anniversary OPEN HOUSE and Sail
Past.
We ask all members to invite friends, family, co-workers,
neighbours, acquaintances and friendly strangers to
the Jericho Sailing Centre between Noon and 4pm this
Saturday to discover all of the bountiful natural powered
low cost recreation programs, facilities and services
we have to offer. While they are here they can buy you
lunch in the Jericho Galley Patio and Grill and receive
member discounts. They can also join you in the Sail
Past or take your picture and cheer you on from the
roof top deck.
The Sail Past is handed down from ancient maritime tradition
where the fleet would Sail Past the Admiral's ship for
review and each skipper would salute the Admiral. The
Sail Past is a great opportunity for all of the
Fleets of the Jericho Sailing Centre to come together,
meet one another and celebrate the sports they love
and our unique ocean access community centre. Jericho
Members and their guests will sail, paddle, windsurf,
row, past our flagship committee boat, the Albatross
and salute our "Commodore" JSCA President Gail Owen
and honorary guests, Park Board Commissioners Ian Robertson
and Chair Raj Hundal. After the Sail Past all members
and their guests are invited to a BBQ Social in the
Hanger area. Come meet the Jericho Board and other fellow
JSCA members. We encourage all members to sail past
and salute which will bring you good luck throughout
the 2009 season.

SAILPAST ATTENDANCE MANDATORY FOR ALL JSCA MEMBERS!!!

If the Jericho Sailing Centre was a yacht club, and of course it's not, it
would be traditionally mandatory for all members to either participate or send
your regrets, in writing, to the Commodore. If you are unable to attend, but
feel so compelled to uphold salt encrusted maritime tradition, our President,
Gail Owen, the closest thing we have to a Commodore, will gladly receive all
your groveling, sniveling, low tide regrets to her email (click "I'm Bailing out of the Sailpast.com")... but really, she'd rather see you out
there!

Volunteers Wanted for Open House
|
We are looking for
volunteers to help with the Jericho Sailing Centre's Open House on Saturday to
help with set-up and greeting our guests. Anyone interested in helping out can
contact me via return email. Volunteers will receive a complementary ticket to
our Sailpast BBQ Social following the Sailpast..

History Repeats: Invasion of Many Canoes at Jericho This Weekend
|
 Not
long after cave dweller Og discovered he could float
on a log the original dug out canoe was conceived.
From there the canoe evolved into one of the most
remarkable craft ever created. Centuries before Columbus,
outrigger canoes traveled across vast reaches of the
Pacific Ocean using stars to navigate long before
the rest of the ancient seafaring world would brave
travel beyond the sight of land. Around the same time
the residents of the native village of E'eyoughmough,
which was located near the present day Jericho Sailing
Centre, used canoes to ply the waters of the BC coast
for travel, trade and warfare.
This weekend 300 avid
outrigger canoeists will travel from all over British Columbia and the Pacific
Northwest USA to the Jericho Sailing Centre to trade sea stories and wage some friendly
warfare in the Jericho Outrigger Canoe Club's annual Iron Race. On Saturday the 6 crew OC6's race with the
short course start at 0930H, the Women/Mixed race starts at 1100H and the Men's
race at 1300H. (The Men's heat will launch the Jericho Sailing Centre's 2009
Sail Past). On Sunday single and double
outrigger canoes and surfskis will race with the Short Course start at 0930H
and the Long Course start at 1100H. For more outrigger canoe information you

FREE Ocean View Yoga
|
It's time to unleash
your inner Downward Dog this Saturday, May 23 from 1030-1145H. This is a one time
FREE session taught by Troy Turi to gauge interest in ongoing yoga programs at
the Jericho Sailing Centre. Please RSVP with the Jericho office if you wish to
participate.

Your Safety
is Your Responsibility
There are elements of risk that common sense and
personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you decide to use the
ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code listed below
and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean experience.
It is every member's responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road
when on or near the water. Here are some key rules which every Jericho member
must know and practice.
1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water.
2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing
powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack.
10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is prohibited and is
particularly dangerous for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the bottom of launching
ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far
as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended periods of time
Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe environment. Membership
in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent on members knowing and
observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
