Here is what's "in the
wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre,
Vancouver's Ocean Access Community Centre, for May 7-13, 2009 and beyond:

Ocean Fitness 101
|
Quite often fair
weather sailors, surfers paddlers and rowers focus their
winter cobweb shaking, spring cleaning exercise efforts
on bringing their hulls, foils, sails, sheets, paddles,
blades and other equipment into ship shapeness for the
impending ocean recreation season and forget about maintenance
of one of
nature's more remarkable naturally powered machines.
If shining your hull, waxing your bottom, stepping your
mast, hoofing your boat to and from the beach or wrestling
into your wetsuit and water gear (that somehow got smaller
over the off season) leaves you huffing and puffing,
it is time to shed the woolly coat of hibernation, shake
off the flab of a Canadian winter and get right back
up on your horse of summer activity.
Here are a couple of unique fitness enhancing activities
recommended by your unique ocean access community centre:
Stand-Up
Core Fitness Program
Why work out in
a sweaty, smelly Gym, when you can get a solid full
body workout on top of the water that's a lot of Fun?
Experience the Zen and tranquility of Stand-Up Paddling,
while at the same time giving yourself a complete workout
under the supervision of the experienced instructors
at Windsure. Work on your balance, stamina, strength,
stability, and muscle tone. This growing sport
has full range of intensities. Come on out to
discover what you are capable of and to meet the local
marine life.
Classes will be
running Wednesday & Friday mornings from 6:30 am
to 7:30 am and those same evenings from 6:30 pm
to 7:30 pm also Saturday Mornings from 8:00 am
to 9:00 am during the months of June, July, and August.
Priced at an ultra-reasonable
rate of $59.00 a month for pre-registrants, or Drop-ins
visits at only $10.00 per person plus applicable taxes.

Ocean
View Yoga
We are trying
to gauge member interest in regular yoga programs at
the Jericho Sailing Centre. To that end local
yoga instructor, Troy Turi, will be conducting a FREE
class on Saturday, May 23 1030-1145H. If the interest
is there, future classes will be offered for $10 per
session. Please RSVP with the JSCA office.
Bike To Work Week May 11-17
For the third
year in a row Jericho members will saddle up and ride
in the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition's Bike to Work
Week.
Next week, from
May 11 to 17, the Vancouver Cycling Coalition will be
presenting Bike to Work (& School) Week. They are inviting
you to join them on the streets and bike routes of Metro
Vancouver!
Even if you already
bike to work, participating in Bike to Work Week has
valuable benefits:

By signing up and logging your rides, you will be entered
to win great prizes! The VACC is doing a Bike-A-Day
Giveaway, with the results announced daily on the CKNW's
Christy Clark Show, and they'll have awesome commuter
station prizes, including panniers and baskets. Plus,
team leaders who recruit the most new cyclists are entered
in an additional contest for another bike! All the information

The route mapping data that you plot will provide valuable
information for municipalities, TransLink, and the VACC
about the routes that cyclists are using, and can help
inform decision makers about cycling issues.

SOS Season Opening Sailpast May 23
|
" an important tradition linking us to history as < mariners>
generally, and as members of Jericho Sailing Centre in particular."
The SOS is important to you to ensure that all of your ocean excursions this
season are blessed with favourable weather. There was a skimpy turnout in 2008
and it rained on 7 out of 8 summer weekends-let's not make the same mistake
again. The SOS is also an important part of the Jericho OPEN HOUSE as it gives
our visiting landlubbers an opportunity to see the Jericho Sailing Centre in
action.
Jericho Members-sail, paddle, windsurf, row, whatever you like to do here, come
out and do it on
Saturday, May 23 between
1300H and 1500H .
Sailing Dinghies 1300H-1330H;
Windsurfers 1330H-1400H;
Paddlers 1400H-1430H;
Rowers, Sailing Canoes and Stand Paddlers 1430H-1500H.

35th Anniversary Jericho Sailing Centre OPEN HOUSE
|
|
The annual Jericho Boat Show Open House on Saturday, May 23 is from Noon-1600H.
Bring your landlubber friends, co-workers, neighbours and relatives down to the
Centre on that day to check out all of the ocean access opportunities available
to them. Our schools, clubs and fleets will be on hand with sign-up information
and displays.

the Royal Victoria Yacht Club Regatta. This photo

Rookie Racing Seminar
|
|
Want
to learn how to sail race? Come to the Rookie Racing
Seminar on June 13 from 1000H-1200H in the NE Meeting
Room. Our Tuesday Nite Racing PRO, Benj Rummen, will
simplify the rules and explain basic strategies and
tactics. This program is free to JSCA members, $75
for non-members. Please RSVP JSCA Office.

Safe Ocean Sailing
Your Safety, and that of your Crew, is YOUR Responsibility
|
There are elements of risk
that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Regardless of how you
decide to use the ocean always show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the
code listed below and share with others the responsibility for a safe ocean
experience.
It is every member's
responsibility to know and observe the rules of the road when on or near the
water. Here are some key rules which every Jericho member must know and
practice.
1. Always wear your
P.F.D. on the water.
2. Sail powered craft have the
right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels
shall keep well clear of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely
dangerous to pass between a tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel
shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall
keep clear of a leeward vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall
keep clear of a vessel ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking
another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing
shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack.
10.The area south of the
orange can buoys is for training or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the
beach in front of the Centre is prohibited and is particularly dangerous for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or
let children play near the bottom of launching ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end
of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway
traffic when launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on
the shoreline for extended periods of time
Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a safe
environment. Membership in the Jericho Sailing Centre Association is contingent
on members knowing and observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
