Dear JSCA Members
|
|
Thank
you to all the members, their friends and family who
participated in the massive Earth Day planting at
the Jericho Sailing Centre this past Saturday. Your
volunteer spirit puts the wind in the sails of the
Jericho Sailing Centre. Another opportunity for members
to give back to their community comes this Sunday
at 1230H as we have scheduled a low tide Shoreline
Clean-up to remove any debris and hazardous obstacles,
particularly in the windsurfing/kayaking/rowing beach
area.
As we approach the sunnier shores of May things start
heating up at the Jericho Sailing Centre. It is the
month that most members start their ocean recreation
season, our dinghy sailing windsurfing and ocean kayaking
schools commence seasonal operation, club programs
are filling fast, the Galley Patio and Grill increases
their hours and menu and our weekly racing programs
get off to a rolling start.
I'd like to remind all members that although the air
temperatures are warming, the wind chill and water
temps are still significantly cold and hypothermia
is the biggest danger we all face out on the water.
Also, a careful pre-launch check of your craft and
all of your equipment is a vital component of safe
on water recreation. As the skipper of a watercraft
you, and only you, are completely responsible for
the safety of yourself and your crew. The first English
Bay Safety Seminar of the season is scheduled for
May 4 at 1900H.
Finally, I'd like to invite all members to participate
in the 35th Anniversary Season Opening Sail past and
invite your friends, family and acquaintances to our
annual Open House both on May 23.

Earth Day Celebration in Jericho Park |
|
Congratulations
to the Jericho Park Stewardship Group and Evergreen
for organizing and hosting the awesome Earth Day Celebration
in Jericho Park last Saturday. Hundreds of people, including
many JSCA members, planted 4,000 native species plants
in Jericho Park. The largest planting concentration
was outside of the south fence of the Jericho Sailing
Centre compound.

SAVE JERICHO BEACH |
|
 The
Save Jericho Beach campaign was launched at the Jericho
Park Earth Day Celebration and several hundred people
who care about their natural environment have already
signed the petition. Please consider adding your voice
for the preservation of this historically significant

. Volunteers who would like to help collect signatures
are asked to reply by return email.

Volunteer Work Party - Shoreline Clean Up |
Come join our volunteer work
party this Sunday, April 26 from 1230-1400H for a low
tide shore line clean-up. We are looking to remove large
rocks, piling ends, bottom snags and other shoreline
hazards which may injure people or hulls.

Weekly Sail Racing Programs Start in May |
|
 The
first Sunday Race of 2009 commences on May 3. Sunday
Racing will occur at 1230H every non-regatta Sunday
between then and September 13.
The first Tuesday Nite Race of 2009 will be on May
5 at 1815H. Tuesday Nite Racing occurs every week
through to September 8.

English Bay Safety
Seminar - May 4 @ 1900 Hrs

This
2 hour seminar covers all the known hazards in English
Bay as experienced by members over the past 35 years
and chronicled in the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team.
Why learn the hard way in nature's harsh elements?
Learn from the mistakes of others in a nice dry classroom.

June 1& 22, July 13 &7, August 10.

Hobie Spring Cleaning
& Hobie Classic Regatta |

Spring cleaning not only happens in the home but at
the sailing yard! We hope to provide interesting articles
once a month to fellow cat sailors and welcome anyone
interested in learning more about catamarans whether
it be socially or racing. For those who have boats
in need of repair, we have attached a link to our
most recent issue of Hobie Hotline. In it, there is
an article on page 12 to 13 called "This Old
Hobie" on Non-Skid Repair that will help give
you tips needed to get you on the water this season!

Hobie Fleet 214 is looking forward to yet another
successful regatta season across the North West and
will be taking part in the Hobie North American Championships
held at Lake Havasu in November = 15 knots, warm breeze
and desert lake sailing. For those staying within
town, Hobie will be hosting their annual Vancouver
regatta on the Hobie Circuit which brings out at least
30+ boats on the water and makes for a great weekend
to meet fellow skippers and hear tales of lore. This
family friendly regatta will be held on June 21st
to 22nd and welcomes sailors from as far as Oregon,
Washington and Vancouver Island. If you have any questions,

The SOS is important to you to ensure that all of
your ocean excursions this season are blessed with
favourable weather. There was a skimpy turnout in
2008 and it rained on 7 out of 8 summer weekends-let's
not make the same mistake again. The SOS is also an
important part of the Jericho OPEN HOUSE as it gives
our visiting landlubbers an opportunity to see the
Jericho Sailing Centre in action.
Jericho Members-sail, paddle, windsurf, row, whatever
you like to do here, come out and do it on
Saturday, May 23 between 1300H and 1500H .
Sailing Dinghies 1300H-1330H;
Windsurfers 1330H-1400H;
Paddlers 1400H-1430H;
Rowers, Sailing Canoes and Stand Paddlers 1430H-1500H.

Sail Safe
|
|
Your safety, and that of your crew, is your responsibility
There are elements of risk to ocean recreation that
common sense and personal awareness can help reduce.
Regardless of how you decide to use the ocean always
show courtesy to others. Please adhere to the code
listed below and share with others the responsibility
for a safe ocean experience.
It is every member's responsibility to know and observe
the rules of the road when on or near the water. Here
are some key rules which every Jericho member must
know and practice.
1. Always wear your P.F.D. on the water.
2. Sail powered craft have the right of way over power
craft, paddle and rowing powered craft.
3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear
of commercial vessels.
4. It is illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between
a tug and it's tow.
5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of
a starboard tack vessel.
6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward
vessel.
7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel
ahead.
8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.
9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of
a vessel on a tack.
10.The area south of the orange can buoys is for training
or transiting only.
11.Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the
Centre is prohibited and is particularly dangerous
for small children.
12.It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near
the bottom of launching ramps.
13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier
as fishers cast lines as far as possible
14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving
15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended
periods of time
Common sense goes a long way toward maintaining a
safe environment. Membership in the Jericho Sailing
Centre Association is contingent on members knowing
and observing the Safe Ocean Sailing rules.
