Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and
items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver's
Ocean Access Community Centre, for October 10-16, 2008 and beyond:
Last Call for Nominations
 Sandwiched
between the Federal and Civic elections this fall is one that
could be more important to the Jericho Sailing Centre Association.
The members of the JSCA will elect 8 Directors to the Board
at the Annual General Meeting on October 28. Historically whatever
the Federal or Civic ruling party, Conservative or Liberal,
COPE or NPA, hasn't made much difference to the Jericho Sailing
Centre - everyone, whatever their persuasion, seems to like
the idea of an accessible low cost ocean access community centre
for small, non-motor powered craft in Vancouver.
Directors of the JSCA are elected for two year terms and within
the next two years there will be significant challenges and
significant opportunity for our organization. The marginal wharf
is tentatively scheduled for demolition in early 2009 which
will open up opportunity to expand ocean access for Vancouver
citizens. The JSCA will be presenting our case to designate
the usage to be consistent with our current beach space - but
we are NOT the only ones with an interest. The JSCA must also
face the challenge of growing demand from the communities we
serve. A waiting list for ground storage space supports our
case to expand the compound eastward which could match us up
nicely with the newly created beach space. Twenty years ago
this month, when Sam Sullivan rolled the first sailing dinghy
for people with disabilities into our compound and started the
first disabled sailing program in Canada we were the leading
edge. Today there are over thirty disabled sailing associations
across Canada and we are the only one without a dock facility.
Despite the tremendous success of the program here (almost 900
launches in 2008) we have become trailing edge in this aspect
of our facility. Over the next two years there will be opportunities
to enhance our facilities and make them more accessible to all.
The Nomination deadline to put your name forward for the JSCA
Board of Directors is next Tuesday, October 14 at 1730H.
Jericho Sailing Centre Association Notice of Annual General
Meeting
Tuesday October 28 at 1900H
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association's 35th Annual General
Meeting will be held Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 1900H in the
English Bay Banquet Room of the Jericho Sailing Centre, 1300
Discovery Street, Vancouver, B.C. The 2007/2008 J.S.C.A. Board
and Committees will report on their accomplishments this past
year and the challenges for the future. Please plan to attend
and participate in the future direction of your ocean access
community centre.
Call for Nominations
Voting will take place to elect seven members for a two-year
term and one member to a one-year term to our 15 member Board
of Directors. The J.S.C.A. Board meets once a month to set policy
and determine Jericho's direction. Interested members who have
time and expertise to offer are invited to submit a letter indicating
their experience and areas of interest to the J.S.C.A. Nominations
Committee c/o the Jericho office no later than 1700H, Tuesday,
October 14. The signed nomination letter must include your name,
address and telephone number. For additional information contact

Penguin Cup Racing Series this Sunday
 Twenty-six
boats participated in last weekend's Penguin Cup Series race.
The series continues every Sunday in October. Racing starts
at 1230H.
Batten Down the Hatches We're Heading Into a Patch
of Rough Weather!
Last week several boats stored in the Jericho compound went
for a short sail without any crew. Every "off season"
vicious wind storms rip through the Jericho Sailing Centre compound
looking for loose tarps, boat covers and poorly stowed gear.
When they find a loose tarp they can turn a docile hibernating
boat into a flying projectile which can cause damage to neighbouring
craft. Members are responsible for ensuring they have "battened
down the hatches" on their equipment stored at the Jericho
Sailing Centre and checking their craft after gnarly windstorms.
We encourage you to check your craft regularly year round, remove
any parts or equipment that can be easily removed (most thefts
occur between Oct.-April) and make sure water doesn't collect
inside your hull (if it freezes and expands it can cause major
damage).
Racing Awards and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Oct.

All members are invited to attend the annual JSCA Racing Awards
and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Sunday, October 26 at 1700H.
Tickets are $10 and available in the JSCA office up until Saturday,
October 25. There will be a slideshow presentation and awards
bestowed upon our notable racers and volunteers. As our way
of showing appreciation for our volunteers, they receive complementary
tickets. If you volunteered for the JSCA in 2008 and haven't
received your invitation please contact Mike or Benj in the
JSCA office.
JSCA October Office Hours
0930H-1730H everyday. Gates open at 0700H and are locked at
Dusk. (approx. 1830H).

On the Water, Your Safety is YOUR Responsibility
A reminder to members who play on the bay at this time of year-place
an extra emphasis on boat safety for yourself and your crew.
Jericho Rescue and other boaters are notably scarce at this
time of the year so you must take extra care to ensure a safe
on water session. It starts with a check of the weather forecast
and tidal activity. Let a friend or family member know you are
going, where you are going and when you expect to be back on
shore (follow-up with an après sailing phone call). Do a meticulous
pre-launch check of your craft and equipment. Recognize when
conditions are beyond your ability and choose not to launch.
Make sure you are properly dressed-wetsuit/drysuit/hat/booties/gloves-including
your PFD. Double check your safety equipment-paddles, bailer,
whistle, flares. Know when the sun is setting and understand
that the wind often shuts off abruptly in the hour before sunset.
Don't go farther from shore than you care to paddle back if
you or your equipment should fail or the wind shuts off.
One final tip: enclose your fully charged cell phone in two
sealed sandwich bags and keep on your person. In the event of
a sea disaster you can't solve yourself, dialing *311 will put
you in touch with the Canadian Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination
Centre.
