Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items
of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver's Ocean
Access Community Centre, for September 4-10, 2008 and beyond:
Tasars in the News
Not
all Tasars are shocking. The Tasar BC Championships are on this
weekend at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Aussie boat designer
Frank Bethwaite, who visited Jericho for the World Championships
back in 1989, designed the double handed, hard chined, racing
monohull sailing dinghy as a "couple's boat" so that
the optimum crew weight would be equal to the weight of the
average man plus the average woman - therein lies extensive
opportunity for much discussion, debate, argument and maybe
even some mild shock- but back to the event. Registration is
on Saturday from 1000H-1130H with first start at 1230H. Registration
cost is $25 per boat or FREE if you haven't sailed in any of
the past three Tasar BC's. A $10 North American Tasar Association
membership is required of all competitors. For more info. on

UBC Old Boys Home Opener - Ripper Memorial Match
The UBC Old Boys Ravens Rugby Football Club kicks off their
35th season this Saturday with the "Ripper Memorial Match"
dedicated to their popular long time player who passed away
last year. The match against the dreaded 'Loma's starts at 1300H.
Sea Mammals land at Jericho
Many
years ago, before the locker room was renovated, I first encountered
one in the dimly lit maze of equipment lockers in the vintage
basement area of the Jericho Sailing Centre. I was investigating
a member report of a foul stench emanating from the area. My
usually less than agile nose led me right to it, a stinky silhouette
within a shadow-back to the wall of a darkened, dead end aisle
way; the only thing standing between it and the fresh salt air
light of freedom, a puzzled manager trying to comprehend exactly
what "it" was. I barely had time to blink when it
suddenly mounted a desperate, ferocious charge, barking like
a crazed, crossed Pit Bull/seal as it flapped across the creaky
wooden floor toward me-extreme agitation exceeded only by smell
- its breath stank like a week long janitor's strike at a salmon
cannery; his slippery, flippery armpits smelled like low tide
at noon on a hot summer's day in Beach Grove: his crotch level
canine teeth flashed like fishing tackle-survival instinct provided
my flip-flopped feet with a quick sidestep right and the even
more frightened sea serpent went roaring by me like a whisker
wind whipping, sea weed slicker, flipper flopping freight train
bound for it's home in the sea-it was only then that I realized
it was a Sea Lion; even then I wasn't so sure.
Many
people have spotted another juvenile California Sea Lion as
well as a Sea Otter in and around the Jericho Sailing Centre
and the Jericho Pier over the past several days. (the one with
big flippers is the sea lion; the one with webbed paws and a
tail is the sea otter-they move on the land very differently-the
sea lion "bounces" from front flippers to back flippers;
the sea otter moves more like a cat.) If you are lucky enough
to spot them, admire them from a distance but do not approach
or otherwise agitate them - the seashore is their home and these
wild animals are known to be fiercely territorial. If you are
lucky enough to get a picture of one of them please email us
a copy. For more info on Sea Lions, Sea Otters and other sea
creatures flip over to www.vanaqua.org

Safety is Your Responsibility - Avoid Hypothermia Dress
Appropriately
As autumn's chill creeps into the fading summer September air
the prospect of hypothermia casts a much longer shadow. Hypothermia
is the transfer of heat from a warm body to cold surroundings
- the first sign is simply shivering. Other signs of the Primary
Stage of hypothermia are cold hands and feet as well as loss
of strength and mobility - none of which is going to improve
your ability to operate your vessel. Secondary Stage signs of
Hypothermia include: bluish lips, slurred speech and confused
actions. From there it is a very short boat ride to the Final
Stage indicated by dilated pupils, blue skin and unconsciousness.
People with small body mass or poor circulation are most susceptible
to hypothermia - kids and elderly folk. In July & August
hypothermia is still a significant danger, surpassed only by
the danger of collision with another vessel. After Labour Day,
with fewer vessels and lower water temperatures hypothermia
re-takes its place as the primary danger we all face on the
water. Sail safe - dress appropriately to prevent hypothermia;
recognize the primary signs and take the appropriate action.
Fair winds,
Mike
