Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items
of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver's Ocean Access
Community Centre, for August 7-August 13, 2008 and beyond:
Coiling, Cooler Than Keelhauling
Dutch naval law once prescribed keelhauling as punishment for
corporal offences. Nothing like a good old hemp rigging rope and
pulley assisted barnacle back scratch- down one side, along the
bottom, and up the other side of a slivery wooden ship's hull
with salt rubbed into the wounds all along the way- to remind
mariners to mind their etiquette onboard and follow the ships
rules. It worked wonders. It built a strong sense of community
and helped establish and preserve order among ships crews.
Now, no one is really suggesting that neglectful JSCA members
are keelhauled for failing to comply with Jericho Sailing Centre
etiquette- and flogging is probably out too; but if everybody
coiled hoses after use, and followed our other simple rules, our
community would benefit and it would make everyone feel pretty
darn good- way better than keelhauling. JSCA

Capital Ideas
The JSCA Board will be discussing capital project fundraising
during the Planning Report at their monthly meeting on Monday,
August 11 at 1900H. One of the ideas is to investigate the formation
of a charitable organization to fund future facility development
in and around the Jericho Sailing Centre. All members are welcome
to comment and/or attend, but in particular we would be interested
in hearing from anyone who has expertise in setting up a charitable
foundation.
Hall of Shame? Unsailed Boats.
The JSCA has been hounding owners of unused
craft to use it or face losing their storage privileges. Many
of our phones calls and messages have not been returned. To that
end we are putting photos of their boats in this photo gallery-we'll
fill in the names next week. Unused

Safety is Your Responsibility - Tip of the
Week - Navigating in the Dark
Collision Regulations require most Jericho style craft to display
a white light between sunset and sunrise or in periods of restricted
visibility. The problem with this is that if the background
contains many other lights reflecting off the sea surface you
may not be as visible as you think you are or as you need to
be to avoid being involved in a collision with a much larger
craft. In a situation such as the conclusion of a Celebration
of Lights fireworks performance you might have as many as 1,500
boats, all larger than yours, some under the command of skippers
who have been drinking, suddenly moving in all different directions
at different rates of speed. There is a lot of chop, a lot of
reflecting light, and even the most careful of skippers will
have a difficult time seeing you. Your safety sense should be
telling you to avoid situations such as this.
