Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, Vancouver's Ocean Access Community Centre, for July 3-9, 2008 and beyond:

Annual Bailiff Auction Noon This Saturday
The annual Jericho Sailing Centre Association Bailiff Auction will be held at Noon this Saturday, July 5. In addition to the craft seized due to non-payment of storage fees there are craft which have been donated to the JSCA as well as privately owned member boats for sale. Craft will be available to view onsite on Friday, July 4 from Noon-1800H.
Ground stored craft sold at the auction must go on our waiting list if the new owners wish to store them at the Jericho Sailing Centre - we currently have a small number of spots available for rack stored craft. Boats sold at the auction can be paid for by cash, debit, Visa or MasterCard.

Marginal Wharf Update
The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will be voting on the future of the Marginal Wharf on Monday, July 7 at 1900H. The Board will be considering the recommendation of their Planning Committee made on June 16. The JSCA will be at the meeting to speak in favour of the recommendation which will return the majority of the beach below the wharf to it's natural state while retaining a small portion at the east end for viewing and commemorative purposes. Aussie Canoe Polo Team trains at Jericho
Ever heard of Canoe Polo? Neither had we until the Manager of the Australian Canoe Polo team requested temporary storage at the Jericho Sailing Centre enroute to the 2008 World Canoe Polo Championships in Edmonton. The team will be staying at the Jericho Hostel and training off of Jericho Beach July 3-8. We have requested they play an exhibition/demonstration game this weekend to give our members and the beach going public an idea of what the next great non-motor powered ocean recreation might be.

Remembering Jericho Beach Flying Boat Station
The Vancouver wing of the Air Force Association of Canada, the Air Force Officer's Association, the Air Crew Association of Greater Vancouver and the BC Veterans Commemorative Association are seeking your support to commemorate the significant role of the military personnel who served at the Jericho Beach Flying Boat Station and to recognize the distinctive nature of the station as the first Royal Canadian Air Force air base in BC.

Volunteer Work Parties - This weekend
1) Annual Battle of the blackberries.
Blackberries are starting to over run portions of our fence and other common areas in our compound. This Saturday we will arm volunteers with shears, root pullers and leather gloves in our annual struggle with invasive blackberries Sunday @ 1000H.

2) Boat Moving & Compound Clean-up
Unused boats are being removed from their spots to free up ground space. Volunteers who help with boat moving and compound clean-up will be given first crack at the newly vacated spots. Sunday @ 1130H.

Join the Jericho Kayak Fleet
The Jericho Kayak Fleet is inviting JSCA paddlers to come out and join them for Social Paddles on Saturday mornings and the odd Full Moon. They meet at the east side of ramp #4 Saturdays at 0845H. For further information e-mail Gail Owen at Gail_Owen@jsca.bc.ca

UBC Sailing Club Beach Party - July 12 with "Said the Whale"
Come shake it to Said the Whale's new hit album, "Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia", as they play it live at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Plus two local DJ's. Tickets for only $12. Subaru Half Iron Triathlon Comes to Jericho July 13
On July 13th, the Jericho Sailing Centre will play host to the Subaru Vancouver International Half and Sprint Triathlon. This event will showcase the Half Ironman race (1.9km swim/90km bike/21km run), and also include a shorter sprint race, relay, and a celebrity division. Highlighting the celebrity division will be Jenny Fletcher, a model who has been featured on the popular television show "Deal or No Deal". Vancouver mayoral candidate Peter Ladner will participate in the race and serve as the Honorary Chairman for the second year. Ladner has been a strong advocate of healthy lifestyles and active living. Also featured will be Iron Chef Rob Feenie. Also expected are former and current Olympic athletes along with a few last minute surprises. The race will host many of the best professionals in the sport as they prepare for Ironman Canada and the famous Hawaiian Ironman. The event will also feature hundreds of amateur athletes, participating just for the challenge of completing the distance, who will start side by side with the professionals - something rare in most major sporting competitions. This is the second year of the event and marks the third stop of the Subaru West Coast Triathlon Series. The race will be staged in the beautiful Spanish Banks and University of British Columbia Endowment Lands with the magnificent Vancouver city and mountain skyline serving as the backdrop. JSCA Office Hours
Hours 0930H-2030H seven days a week. Gates open at 0700H and are locked at Dusk. (approx. 2121H). The office closes every Wednesday between Noon and 1230H for our weekly staff meeting which helps us better serve the JSCA.

Safety is Your Responsibility
Tip of the Week - "Swimming Prohibited" Area
The first really hot weekend of 2008 brought swimmers out in droves last week. The launching area in front of the Jericho Sailing Centre is one of the few "Swimming Prohibited" designated areas in the Vancouver Beach Park system. The reasons for this are obvious to most: a craft colliding with a swimmer could be potentially fatal. Within this launch area, which is frequently occupied by craft skippered by beginners and novices, there have been many collisions and close calls, numerous boom bonk concussions and people hit by falling windsurfing masts - there has even been a broken leg and a corresponding lawsuit. We are asking our members to help us educate the public (and other members) by pointing out the signs on the fence and explaining the dangers. If people insist on swimming, please bring it to the attention of Jericho staff or Rescue Team volunteers. The Lifeguards stationed at Jericho Beach or Locarno will attend and can write a $75 citation. Please help the JSCA ensure there is no swimming in this area - it all seems like good fun until someone gets a Hobie in the head.
