Jericho Sailing Centre in the wind
Jericho Sailing Centre "in the wind" February 14, 2008

Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for February 14-27, 2008 and beyond:

Last Chance to Save 2% on your 2008 JSCA Fees
Your 2008 JSCA Membership and Storage fees are not due until April 1, however, you will receive a 2% discount if you pay early. We are extending the February 15 deadline to include payments received this weekend. The office will be open from 0930-1630H Saturday and Sunday and there will be extra friendly staff on hand to facilitate your transaction. You can reduce the time required and paper used by bringing in your JSCA invoice received in the mail signed with any address, phone number, email, or storage requirement changes noted. Also, please remember to take the time to complete the membership survey. Your feedback helps us better serve the needs of JSCA members.

Vancouver Boat Show - Volunteer Thanks
Thank you to the almost 60 members who helped crew the Jericho Sailing Centre Association's display booth at the Vancouver International Boat Show February 6-10. Volunteerism puts the wind in the sails of the Jericho Sailing Centre and their dedication shooting the breeze with show patrons about the merits of our varied programs, services and facilities with result in many new members coming on board in 2008.

Compound Clean-up Volunteer Work Parties
The JSCA Board is encouraging all members to participate in the 2008 Jericho Sailing Centre Compound Beautification Project by keeping your boat and storage space ship shape and by participating with volunteer work parties in 2008 to help clean up aisle ways and other common space areas. We will have a bin onsite throughout February to facilitate compound clean-up; please pitch in.

NOTICE OF POTENTIAL SERVICE DISRUPTION
The vinyl flooring on the second floor of the Jericho Sailing Centre is being replaced. The work will occur between February 20 and March 7. During this period we will not be booking classroom space, however, we will strive to ensure that members have access to washroom, shower and change room facilities. There will be times during weekdays in daytime hours where it may not be possible to accommodate those who are unable to levitate across freshly glued areas. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the patience and understanding of our members who, we are sure, will enjoy the new floor once installation is complete.

JSCA's Developing Action Plan for 2008
More Committee meetings are on the schedule in the further development of the JSCA's Annual Action Plan for 2008. The meetings are open and all members are invited to participate in the management of our unique ocean access facility.

OPERATIONS COMMITTEE (Next Meeting February 19 @ 1900H)
The agenda will include discussion on the results of an energy study conducted on the Jericho Sailing Centre over the past few months. Discussion will also continue around the 2008 Jericho Sailing Centre Compound Development plan and the process for dealing with inactive craft. Ramp repairs are also on the agenda for discussion.

PROGRAMMES COMMITTEE (Next Meeting February 26 @ 1900H)
The agenda will include website development, racing programs, Jericho Boat Show OPEN HOUSE and commemorative displays to adorn the walls of the centre.

PLANNING COMMITTEE (Next Meeting February 28 @ 1900H)
The agenda will include JSCA's Compound Development Plan as well as discussion on the future of the Marginal Wharf.

Marginal Wharf Public Meeting this Spring
There will be a public meeting this spring regarding the future of the marginal wharf just east of the Jericho Sailing Centre. A tentative date of March 12 is being considered but is not yet firm. The JSCA Board and Planning Committee have been considering this issue over the past year and favour the opportunity to return the shoreline to it's natural state in harmony with an expanded compound which would allow our members and the public to launch naturally powered craft from this beach. (see Planning Minutes on our website at www.jsca.bc.ca ) In addition the JSCA would like to see the future development of a modest dock facility to facilitate the Disabled Sailing Association and other programs such as National and International racing events in all of the sports we serve. We will continue to keep members informed on this issue and will encourage all members to be involved in the public process.

JSCA Office Hours
February Hours 0930H-1630H Weekdays. 0900H-1700H Weekends. Gates open at 0700H and are locked at Dusk. (approx. 1730H).

On the Water, Your Safety is Your Responsibility
A reminder to members who play on the bay at this time of year-place an extra emphasis on boat safety for yourself and your crew. Jericho Rescue and other boaters are notably scarce at this time of the year so you must take extra care to ensure a safe on water session. It starts with a check of the weather forecast and tidal activity. Let a friend or family member know you are going, where you are going and when you expect to be back on shore (follow-up with an après sailing phone call). Do a meticulous pre-launch check of your craft and equipment. Recognize when conditions are beyond your ability and choose not to launch. Make sure you are properly dressed-wetsuit/drysuit/hat/booties/gloves-including your PFD. Double check your safety equipment-paddles, bailer, whistle, flares. Know when the sun is setting and understand that the wind often shuts off abruptly in the hour before sunset. Don't go farther from shore than you care to paddle back if you or your equipment should fail or the wind shuts off.
One final tip: enclose your fully charged cell phone in two sealed sandwich bags and keep on your person. In the event of a sea disaster you can't solve yourself, dialing *311 will put you in touch with the Canadian Coast Guard's Rescue Coordination Centre.
Fair winds,
Mike
