Jericho Sailing Centre "in the wind" November 30,
2007
Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items
of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean
access community centre, for November 30-December 13,
2007 and beyond:
Plans Launched for 2008 at the Jericho Sailing Centre
We're still a few good wintery blows away from the end
of 2007 but the 2008 season at the Jericho Sailing Centre
is starting to take form as clearly as clouds on the horizon.
The first scheduled competition is the Pacific Northwest
Outrigger Racing Canoe Association's annual icebreaker-you
can forget your sunscreen at home for this one, it's on
January 26. About that same time you'll be receiving your
Jericho Sailing Centre Association's annual billing for
membership and storage which will include a 4% increase
from 2007. The invoice isn't due until April 1st, however
you will receive a 2% discount if it's paid by February
15. Included in your billing package will be a letter
informing you that we have a waiting list for craft storage
and that storage privileges at the Jericho Sailing Centre
are dependent on active use. If you didn't use your craft
last year please consider your launching plans for 2008
before renewing.
We will have a large disposal bin in the compound for
an early Spring clean-up February 2-10. Two weekends of
volunteer work parties are on our schedule to remove accumulated
debris from common areas-aisle ways, row ends, etc. If
you have anything stored in these areas, please remove
it before we do. Along the same lines, the JSCA Operations
Committee is encouraging all members to keep their boat
and storage spot neat and tidy.
The JSCA will have a display at the Vancouver Boat Show
February 6-10 and we are looking for members who would
like to volunteer to promote the Jericho Sailing Centre
to show patrons. Two hours of volunteering gives you free
access to the show.
Our weekly sailing and paddling racing programs jump the
gun in May and don't forget to invite all of your landlubber
friends, family and acquaintances to the Centre on May
10 for the annual Jericho Boat Show Open House. For the
complete 2008 event schedule slip over to our website
at www.jsca.bc.ca
For more information on the developing 2008 JSCA Annual
Action Plan see the minutes from the November 27 Annual
Fleet Planning Meeting and the November 21 Operations
Committee Meeting. All JSCA Committee and Board meetings
are open to all members, check out our website for dates
and times.

Saturday December 15 at 0900H

deadline is December 10, 2007 at 1630H. Nominees are asked
to attend the December 11 JSCA Board meeting at 1900H.
If you would like more information please contact me via
return email.
Upcoming Meetings:
JSCA Board December 11 @ 1900H
JSCA Board January 22 @ 1900H
JSCA Office Hours
December Hours 0930H-1630H Weekdays. 0900H-1700H Weekends.
The Centre is sparsely staffed at this time of year and
staff may be elsewhere in the building or compound. If
you visit during office hours and find the office locked
there will be a sign on the door directing you to where
the staff are working. Gates open at 0700H and are locked
at Dusk. (approx. 1615H).
On the Water, Your Safety is Your Responsibility
A reminder to members who play on the bay at this time
of year-place an extra emphasis on boat safety for yourself
and your crew. Jericho Rescue and other boaters are notably
scarce at this time of the year so you must take extra
care to ensure a safe on water session. It starts with
a check of the weather forecast and tidal activity. Let
a friend or family member know you are going, where you
are going and when you expect to be back on shore (follow-up
with an après sailing phone call). Do a meticulous pre-launch
check of your craft and equipment. Recognize when conditions
are beyond your ability and choose not to launch. Make
sure you are properly dressed-wetsuit/drysuit/hat/booties/gloves-including
your PFD. Double check your safety equipment-paddles,
bailer, whistle, flares. Know when the sun is setting
and understand that the wind often shuts off abruptly
in the hour before sunset. Don't go farther from shore
than you care to paddle back if you or your equipment
should fail or the wind shuts off.
One final tip: enclose your fully charged cell phone in
two sealed sandwich bags and keep on your person. In the
event of a sea disaster you can't solve yourself, dialing
*311 will put you in touch with the Canadian Coast Guard's
Rescue Coordination Centre.
Fair winds,
Mike
