Jericho Sailing Centre "in the wind" August 23, 2007

Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for August 23-29, 2007 and beyond:

8th Annual Jericho Oceanman This Sunday
The defining event for beach boys and girls, is the annual Jericho Oceanman which takes place this Sunday at 1000H. The event was concocted by Ocean's father, Gary Parsons who, as a longtime lifeguard at Jericho Beach fell asleep in the sun one day and had a sunburned vision of a unique Vancouver beach adventure race which includes a 1Km ocean swim, 6Km paddle, 8 Km run with a couple of mystery events sprinkled within. And of course Gary likes to have fun so his vision had to include an awesome Salmon Barbeque with Bakehouse Pies, live music (The Hawaiian sliding guitar sounds of The Swagmen) awards and T-shirts, cool T-shirts (Lulu Lemon T-shirts this year). That vision was 8 years ago, last millennium, and in 2007 the legend continues. Look for the Jericho Oceanman feature article in this Saturday's Weekend Edition of theVancouver Sun. There is still time to enter individually or as a team. Ebb & flow over to www.oceanman.ca for more information. This is a fun, spectator friendly event as the swimming and on-water sections can be easily viewed from the Jericho Sailing Centre's decks (there's nothing like relaxing and enjoying a latte while you watch other people sweat) or the Jericho Pier. Come out and watch last year's defending champion Jericho Galley Patio & Grill sponsored team splash it out with the Windsure crew for in-house bragging rights. Sea ya there!

DSA Integration Regatta
The competitive summer juices will also be flowing at the 2007 Disabled Sailing Association Integration Regatta this Sunday at 1230H. Five teams comprised of disabled and able bodied sailors will sea battle it out in Martin 16's & Escapes to see who will take home the hardware. The regatta will be rolled in with our regular Sunday Racing Program.

Sunday Racing
This Sunday at 1230H precisely

Tuesday Night Racing
Special Coaching Edition with Dave Thomas
Former Canadian Olympic Sailing Team Coach and MacSailing school co-owner, Dave Thomas will be on deck for JSCA's next Tuesday Night Racing Program. Dave will conduct an instructional Skipper's Meeting at 1730H in the plaza reviewing the "5 Things Every Racer Must Know Before They Go Out On a Race Course." After the Skipper's meeting Dave will come out onboard "Jericho Rescue" with our camera crew to record some live action racing clips starting at 1815H. The Coach will then provide a debrief and interactive session as racing highlights play on the big screen in the Burrard Room after sunset. Ross Macdonald followed Coach Dave's winning recipes and sailed away from two Olympics with medals. You may not tack your way to such lofty heights but you could absorb that one little bit of precious knowledge that propels you to Tuesday Night Racing glory. The Jericho Galley Patio & Grill is chipping in with a special on Tuborg beer for the evening and Andy Hunt will be unloading his draw prize treasure chest.

Canadian Laser Masters Championship Regatta-Labour Day Weekend
Roll out the rocking chairs, warm up the milk, we`re just one week away from the 2007 Canadian Laser Masters Championships Sept. 1-3. Participants must be at least 35 as of Sept. 1. There are four divisions as follows: Apprentice 35-44; Masters 45-54; Grand Master 55-64; Great Grand Masters 65+. Radials are welcome. For the Notice of Race beam over to our website at www.jsca.bc.ca. For information on this event or anything to do with Lasers contact Andy Hunt at bclaser@hotmail.com

Canadian Outrigger Canoe Championships - Backpaddle
Flatish sea state conditions made for flat out racing at last weekend's Canadian Outrigger Canoe Championships. Our home side, the JOCC's Men's #1 crew bumped and grinded their way to first place in an all out battle with fierce rivals False Creek Canoe Club. The two boats swapped paint at the turn and then swapped the lead back and forth on the final leg until "Jericho Oceanman" Gary Parsons, steering for the good guys, found some hills in an otherwise prairie like sea and surfed them to victory. In the OC6 Women's Open Race Jericho 1 took third place while Jericho 2 took 5th. In the OC 6 Men's Senior Masters the Jericho Geezers took first place. Sunday's small boat racing saw rugged JOCC veteran Bob Stewart win the Men's Golden Masters OC1 while young buck Mike Parks won the Men's Senior Masters Surfski. Transplant Time - Volunteer Workparty This Sunday 1000H
In preparation for removal of the overgrown cedar trees against the south side of the building we are hosting a volunteer workparty this Sunday at 1000H to transplant the Wild Strawberries from below them into our ever growing, evergreen, native plant garden. Volunteer for your ocean access community centre. Come out, get "wild", get dirty, with our in-house volunteer botanist Paul Morris. Paul is a wealth of information on gardening and can teach you the most successful transplanting techniques. Tools and refreshments provided.

Battle of the Blackberries-Volunteer Workparties
Saturday & Sunday @ 1000H.

Annual Big Brothers Voyage of 'Discovery' more Appreciation
Discovery member, Mary Thompson drew my attention to the fact that the Discovery Sailing Club Big Brothers Sailing Day on Aug. 11 was also supported by Mac Sailing who provided life jackets for some of the boys. Also, The Sea Dragon Sea Scouts sent two "delightful young men", James & Chris to teach knots to the little brothers while they were on shore waiting. And somehow I missed mentioning Helen MacDonald as Discovery's Social Convener. Once again, many thanks to everyone who was involved for sharing the community spirit of the Jericho Sailing Centre with these young fellows.

JSCA Notice of AGM Tuesday October 23 at 1900H
The Jericho Sailing Centre Association's 34th Annual General Meeting will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at 1900H in the English Bay Banquet Room of the Jericho Sailing Centre, 1300 Discovery Street, Vancouver, B.C. The 2006/2007 J.S.C.A. Board and Committees will report on their accomplishments this past year and the challenges for the future. Please plan to attend and participate in the future direction of your ocean access community centre.

Call for Nominations
Voting will take place to elect eight members for a two-year term to our 15 member Board of Directors. The J.S.C.A. Board meets once a month to set policy and determine Jericho's direction. Interested members who have time and expertise to offer are invited to submit a letter indicating their experience and areas of interest to the J.S.C.A. Nominations Committee c/o the Jericho office no later than 1700H, Tuesday, October 9. The signed nomination letter must include your name, address and telephone number. For additional information contact Mike Cotter, J.S.C.A. General Manager 224-4177 or email mike@jsca.bc.ca.

Ground Craft Storage Space Wanted
Not using your ground stored craft? The JSCA will buy your spot back. We currently have boats on our waiting list and we would like to accommodate them all. At this time our staff is taking stock of inactive craft populating the compound. If necessary, under the terms of our Boat Storage Policy, storage rights for these craft may be withdrawn. We are currently asking members who may wish to voluntarily relinquish their ground storage to contact the office to arrange a refund on the unused portion of their storage fees. This offer does not apply to rack storage.

LAUNCH Dolly Etiquette
We would like to reminder members that JSCA launch dollies are for everyone's use. Please show consideration of your fellow members by using dollies only for launching and retrieval. Dollies used to launch boats must be immediately returned to the fence and not left on the shoreline.

more information.

Safety in the Launching Area
With all of the activity going on in the launch area it is very easy to become distracted and that's when accidents can happen. We'd like to remind members that pedestrians have the right of way in this area and they are often strangers who are unfamiliar with the workings of the sailing centre. Launch ramps should be used for launching and retrieving craft only - not for loitering or testing out your latest circus act. Please do not sit immediately beside a ramp as people have lost control of their boats in the past and they tend to swing off to the side. Please do not distract people using the winch as they must focus on safely completing their task.

Fair winds,
Mike
