Jericho Sailing Centre "in the wind" July 19, 2007

Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for July 19-July 25, 2007 and beyond:

That's not Driftwood, it's the Swift Solo N. American Championships
They're breaking out the serious lumber for the Swift Solo North American Championships here at the Jericho Sailing Centre July 21-28. Don't be fooled by the beautiful hand laid cedar wood strip construction, these high performance single handed sailing skiffs aren't driftlogs, they're 89 kilo hulls are powered by close to 39 square metres of high octane sails and they fly across the water like wood chips off a beachcomber's chainsaw. If you are drawn by the romantic lure of wooden boats and the sea come down to the Centre and ogle these babies or google your peepers over to www.swiftsolo.org. Registration Saturday the 21st, clinics and practice races 22nd, 23rd & 24th, regatta racing July 25, 26, 27 & 28.

Second Annual Complete Crew BBQ - Saturday, July 21st
You are invited to a community event for all Jericho members. A chance to get together, swap sea stories and enjoy a BBQ here at the Jericho Sailing Centre. Meet other club members, kayakers, racers, paddlers, windsurfers or join in the Stand Paddling Race sponsored by Windsure Windsurfing. Last year over one hundred members attended and a good time was had by all. Enjoy a quality day on the water and then let us do the cooking- Saturday, July 21 @ 1600H. RSVP if possible, but drop ins welcome Tickets $5 - your choice of Veggie, Beef, Chicken or Salmon Burgers, assorted salads and non-alcoholic beverage included. Beer, Coolers and wine also available. Volunteers wanted, please reply via return email.

Locarno Beach Party, Saturday, July 21
Come shake to the Tainted Lovers as they play the beachiest party room in Vancouver at the Jericho Sailing Centre this Saturday at 8pm. Tix R $12. To reserve tickets email Mark Freeman at social@clublocarno.com.

Celebration of Lights Fireworks-Where there's fire, there's smoke.
Mid-summer nights in Vancouver, ocean in the air, sparkly, colour throbbing lights of erupting incendiary devices, puckering eardrums, acrid smoke watering your eyes and smelling up your nose- can it get any better than this? The annual Celebration of Lights Fireworks rains down on English Bay July 25 & 28, and August 1 & 4 at 2200H (10pm for landlubbers) The view from the Jericho Sailing Centre is pretty good and a far more traffic/parking friendly venue than English Bay Beach or Kits Point. We strongly recommend that members and guests DO NOT take boats out on fireworks evenings as it is extremely hazardous. At the end of the show, hundreds of boats, all bigger than you, disperse in hundreds of different directions and the resulting turbulent sea surface reflects light in every direction making Jericho size boats impossible to see.

Next ENGLISH BAY SAFETY SEMINAR Monday, July 30 @ 1900H

Wayne Philips 2007 Odyssey Esquimalt to Vancouver
Wayne Philips is at it again. Last year Wayne became the first person to sail a Turbo Martin MY 16 from Vancouver to Naniamo and back to highlight Disabled Sailing Association of B.C.'s programs for sailors with disabilities. This year Wayne wants to, once again, boldly go where no one has gone before. Wayne is looking for a support vessel to escort him on his odyssey, all expenses paid. Any mariners able to assist are requested to contact Wayne at phillips@vcn.bc.ca .

Garden Party-Volunteer Workparty July 28
Come help us beautify the Jericho Sailing Centre. Paul Morris and his collection of green thumb volunteers will be working in the Evergreen native plant garden between the main entrance and the SW corner of the compound. Join the crew, help make Jericho more beautiful than it already is Saturday, July 28 at 1000H.

Annual Battle of the Blackberries Returns to Jericho
No, not the rat race clash of business suited, techno geeks, injecting their lifeline schedules into their Blackberry addicted electronic palms. We're talking prime, Grade A, marinated in the rain, Jericho Beach Park fruit of the loom, blackberries-those centreboard well penetrating, thorn adorned vines snaking their way around trailers, over hulls, up masts, and through racks and the fences of the Jericho Sailing Centre. Over the next three weekends our volunteer workparties will be focused on winning this annual epic struggle one thorn at a time. Come help us out on weekend days between 1000H and 1400H. Help clear out the space around your boat and common areas around the Centre. Band aids and refreshments supplied.

Rowed to Bliss
Congratulations to 9 year JSCA members Dari and Dennis Rank who log their every precious salt water therapy session in their tandem open ocean rowing shell. This past Tuesday they logged their 500th row from the friendly shores of Jericho. Dennis and Dari's "loveboat" rows year round in a smorgasbord of Vancouver weather conditions proving the family that rows together, flows together.

Fair winds,
Mike
