Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for June 14-20, 2007 and beyond:

Last Week of Spring, Bring On the Sunshine!

If the volatile Spring weather has been limiting your on-water fun, bear with us, Summer is just around the corner! It's no guarantee to the end of this "June-uary" weather we've been experiencing but by all weather "expert" accounts our summer is expected to be fairer than usual which leads us to ask "Can you really be considered an 'expert' when you're wrong half the time?" My advice: break out the sunscreen, but don't lose track of your umbrella.

Marginal Wharf Update - Marginal Committee Sketching Concepts

As many members are aware, the Marginal Wharf, that large concrete expanse which hovers over the shore immediately east of the Jericho Sailing Centre is about to undergo some change. It was built over 70 years ago to facilitate transiting flying boats and seaplanes between their hangers and the sea. The wooden support structure is steadily failing and public safety is the catalyst for action. The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation has contracted a consultant to consider 3 options: 1.) Repair and rehabilitation of the entire structure; 2.) Demolition and Foreshore Reinstatement; and, 3.) Partial Demolition and Partial Structural Rehabilitation. The consultants report will be the subject of public meeting(s) expected to be held at the Jericho Sailing Centre this fall. In the meantime, the JSCA Board has struck an Ad Hoc Marginal Wharf Committee to consider and develop JSCA's position in preparation for the public meeting(s). So far the Committee has identified the following three key areas which the JSCA should navigate toward in respect to the Marginal Wharf:

I.) Increase the beach area available for small, naturally powered craft.

II.) Increase the Jericho Sailing Centre compound east with access to the "Marginal" area.

III.) A more effective facility to support the Disabled Sailing Association.

UBC Sailing Club-Beach Party Saturday, June 16

The UBC Sailing Club is hosting a Beach Party in the Hanger at the Jericho Sailing Centre this Saturday, June 16, from 2000H-0100H. Tickets are $10 and available from the UBC Sailing Club or the JSCA office.

Father's Day - Sunday, June 17

Take Dad sailing/windsurfing/paddling/rowing and treat him to breakfast/lunch/dinner at the Jericho Galley Patio & Grill.

Jericho Hobie Classic Regatta - Raining Cats and Logs!

The weather was wet but these cats weren't afraid of the water. Inclement weather this past weekend resulted in a much lighter than usual turnout for the annual Jericho Hobie Classic Regatta. While most of Jericho's Hobie Fleet #214 eyed the raindrops falling from the sky, rolled over and continued their catnaps Saturday morning, a herd of cats, from Washington State and elsewhere, rolled in and staked out their territory at one of the favourite stops on the Hobie Racing Circuit. Racing conditions were excellent on Saturday as gusty, shifty East-Southeast winds to 15 knots challenged racers and drift logs floating through the course added an additional element of excitement. Flying Tigers Mark and Ingrid Jones did an excellent job of organizing and hosting the event and still managed to squeak out a tiebreaker win in the Hobie Tiger Fleet. Jericho's own Paul Evenden and daughter Rita won the Hobie 18 fleet. For complete regatta results, pounce over to the Racing section of our website at www.jsca.bc.ca .

Rookie Racing Clinic - Sunday, June 24 @ 0900H

Thinking about racing sailing dinghies but not sure where to begin? We will make it as painless as possible for you. This 2 hour class room session takes the legalese gobbley gook of Racing Rules and translates them into beginner friendly English which will ease your transition into our Sunday and Tuesday Racing Programs. We'll cover starting sequences, racing right of ways, courses and basic strategies and tactics. Following the clinic you'll be ready to enter the regular Sunday Racing event which commences at 1230H. Registration required through the JSCA Office. The clinic is free to JSCA members and $69 for non-members.

Racers-Sail Numbers Please!

Some crispy, crunchy new sails within the Tasar Fleet are causing some consternation among our race officials - folks, if you don't have sail numbers on your crispy, crunchy new sails how can we score you?!

English Bay Safety Seminar - Monday, June 25 @ 1900H

Thirty four years of experience rescuing JSCA members has taught us a thing or two about preventing mishaps on the water. This 2 hour program covers the principles of safety that will make your salt water recreation safer and more enjoyable. A must for anyone who is new to the Jericho Sailing Centre. RSVP JSCA Office Free to members and non-members alike.

Hazardous Goods Storage

A reminder to members that propane, solvents, paint and other hazardous goods must not be stored within the Jericho Sailing Centre-check your locker to make sure you comply.

Bailiff Auction & Boat Sale - Saturday July 7

Our annual Bailiff Auction where the JSCA auctions off craft for which storage fees have not been paid will take place at Noon on Saturday, July 7. This is also an opportunity for members to sell their used equipment. A head's up for members considering buying or selling equipment. More info to come as the day draws nearer.

Windsure Windsurfin' Wednesdays!

NO WWW on the next two Wednesdays, June 20 & 27. WWW returns Wednesday July 4. Whatever your windsurfing level, from novice to expert, come out on Wednesday evenings between 1800H-2000H (weather dependant), let me know what you want to work on, and I'll coach you through it-you could be just one good tip away from completing that maneuver you've been working on.

June is Water Safety Month

Make a thorough pre-launch check part of your rigging routine. Check all parts for wear & tear especially in high stress areas-centre board wells, rudder assemblies, mast bases, shrouds- and don't forget your plugs. Be prepared, be safe-next English Bay Safety Seminar Monday, June 25 @ 1900H sign-up in the JSCA office.
