Jericho Sailing Centre "in the wind" May 31, 2007
Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what's "in the wind", coming events and items of interest
at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for
May 31-June 6, 2007 and beyond:
Jericho Classic Regatta - This Weekend
The pinnacle of sailing dinghy racing each year at the Jericho Sailing
Centre is the Jericho Classic Regatta which takes place this coming
weekend. A longtime fixture on the sailing dinghy regatta circuit in
the Pacific Northwest, the Classic draws racers from throughout BC and
Washington State. Registration takes place Saturday morning in the Sailor's
Lounge between 1000H-1130H. Skippers Meeting will be held at 1200H with
racing commencing at 1300H precisely. Dinner & video highlights
of Saturday's racing will be in the Burrard Room at 1800H. Sunday's
racing will commence at 1100H. The entry fee is $30 for single-handed
boats and $50 for double-handed boats. Additional dinner tickets are
available at registration for $15. The Notice of Race can be located
on the "Racing"
section of our website at www.jsca.bc.ca Our regular Sunday Racing Program
will not be conducted June 3 or 10 (Hobie Regatta) and will resume on
Father's Day June 17.
Volunteer Workparty - THIS Saturday 1000H
Our Monarch of Mulch, native plant gardener extraordinaire, Paul Morris
is inviting members to help make the Jericho Sailing Centre a more beautiful
place by participating in our volunteer work party on Saturday, June
2 at 1000H. We'll be placing bark mulch around the new plantings in
our native plant garden between the main entrance gate and the SW Corner
of the compound. It's itchy work but it will be appreciated by many
for years to come and as a top notch sailing organization our "Barque
is always worse than our Byte"-forgive me. Tools & refreshments
supplied.
Bike to Work Week-Now through June 3
Andy Hunt and Elizabeth Buxbaum are the most recent sign-ups under the
JSCA banner for the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition's Bike to Work
Program. All volunteers and staff of the JSCA are encouraged to sign-up.
We also encourage all of our members to register under your employer
for kilometres ridden to and from work at www.vacc.bc.ca/biketowork/
. The website keeps track of your accumulated kms ridden and calculates
the measure of pollutants you didn't put in the air.
Jericho Hobie Classic Regatta - June 9 & 10
Hide the sea yarn, it's almost time to change the kitty litter! Our
annual "Cat Convention" convenes the weekend after next as
Hobies and other felines from watery fields afar migrate to the Jericho
Sailing Centre. More details will appear in next week's "in the
wind", right Mark Jones? Cat got your tongue?
Jericho Outrigger Canoe Club 2007 Iron Race - Backpaddle
Last weekend the Jericho Sailing Centre was host facility to the 2007
Iron Race put on by the Jericho Outrigger Canoe Club. JOCC members put
on an awesome event with Peter Forand acting as rookie steersman supported
by a finely seasoned volunteer crew. Racing was conducted in a variety
of conditions over the weekend from flat water for the OC sixes on Saturday,
to roaring twenties (20 knot winds with corresponding seas) for the
Ladies OC 1 & 2's, to leftover lumps and chunks for the men who
paddled in the afternoon through a porridge-like sea surface in 8 knot
winds. Cheers to JSCA's Safety/Racing Officer Rory Johnston and members
of the Jericho Rescue Team who facilitated this event as well as regular
Sunday Racing without missing a beat.
Creative Historical Volunteer Project
When former longtime JSCA Archivist, John Crosse, passed away last Fall
his son David donated John's collection of old Jericho photos. We are
looking for members who are blessed with creative, artistic skills to
compile historic JSCA photos into a collage to display in Centre for
all members to enjoy. There will be a modest budget for materials and
expenses. Please contact me if you are artsy and interested.
Hazardous Goods Storage
A reminder to members that propane, solvents, paint and other hazardous
goods must not be stored within the Jericho Sailing Centre-check your
locker to make sure you comply.

Windsure Windsurfin' Wednesdays!
Whatever your windsurfing level, from novice to expert, come out on
Wednesday evenings between 1800H-2000H (weather dependant), let me know
what you want to work on, and I'll coach you through it-you could be
just one good tip away from completing that maneuver you've been working
on.
The Centreboard
We invite all JSCA members to contribute pictures and articles to "the
Centreboard" portion of our website simply by replying to this
email. Pictures of this weekend's Jericho Classic Regatta will be very
much appreciated. A sea yarn or two would be good two.
June is Water Safety Month
As June is the most popular month (Canada wide) for recreational boaters
to clear the cobwebs of winter and head back out on the water it also
has the highest ratio of accidents to launches. In most incidents accidents
are either a result of; failure to do a proper and thorough pre-launch
check; failure to wear proper personal equipment (ex. PFD, wetsuit),
lack of proper knowledge or impairment. Every skipper is responsible
for the safety of themselves and crew. The Jericho Sailing Centre has
the resources to provide mariners with the knowledge they need to have
and use; our professional dinghy sailing; windsurfing and ocean kayaking
schools provide safety knowledge to thousands each year. Our staff and
Jericho Rescue Team are also a source of valuable safety knowledge.
There is water safety knowledge available to all under the "Rescue
Team" section of our website at www.jsca.bc.ca Be prepared, be
safe-next English Bay Safety Seminar Monday, June 25 @ 1900H sign-up
in the JSCA office.
Fair winds,
Mike
