Jericho Sailing Centre “in the wind” XXXIII- April 12, 2007

Ahoy JSCA Members:
Here is what’s “in the wind”, coming events and items of interest at the Jericho Sailing Centre, your ocean access community centre, for April 12-April 18, 2007 and beyond:

Jericho Boat Show OPEN HOUSE Saturday May 12
We are just one short month away from the annual Jericho Boat Show Open House on Saturday, May 12 from Noon-1600H. Plan on bringing your landlubber friends, co-workers, neighbours and relatives down to the Centre on that day to check out all of the ocean access opportunities available to them. Our schools, clubs and fleets will be on hand with sign-up information and displays. Check out our Season Opening Sailpast which this year will include a Stand Paddling Race and a salute to sailing canoes.

SOS 2007 – JSCA Season Opening Sailpast
Jericho Members-sail, paddle, windsurf, row, whatever you like to do here, come out and do it on Saturday, May 12 between 1300H and 1500H . The SOS is a takeoff of a longstanding “Yacht Club” tradition with a “Jericho style” twist – there be no blue blazers, white slacks or martinis on the poop deck here. Our members will sail, paddle, windsurf & row past our flagship the “Albatross” and salute (or otherwise anoint with water) JSCA President, Brian Key, to ensure that they have good luck for the 2007 season. A “Sail Plan” will be determined and posted that day depending on wind direction & velocity so that we don’t all crash into each other. We’ll divide the sailpast into 4 components with sailboats going between 1300H-1330H; windsurfers from 1330H-1400H; paddlers from 1400H-1430H; and rowers, sailing canoes and stand paddlers from 1430H-1500H. The SOS is important to you to ensure that all of your ocean excursions this season are blessed with favourable weather. It is an important part of the Jericho Boat Show OPEN HOUSE as it gives our visiting landlubbers an opportunity to see the Jericho Sailing Centre in action.

Penguin Cup Racing this Sunday April 15 @ 1230H
Sunday’s forecast: 13degrees, 30% chance of precipitation should ensure a racable breeze for the season opener. We are still looking for volunteers to assist with race committee please contact the JSCA office before 1100H Sunday if you are interested.

Rack Placement
This weekend we are replacing wooden “Laser” racks numbered 1570-1589 as well as placing a new 30 kayak aluminum rack. Members who have craft stored in these racks have been contacted by phone and we appreciate their assistance in transferring to their new spot. Members who are on our relocation list who volunteer to help us get these new racks on line will be given preferential treatment.

1st Annual JSCA Boat Wash
Nip that first boat washing of the season procrastination in the bud. We’re going to make it easy for you. This weekend the JSCA will facilitate the first (possibly annual) boat wash for members who have paid their 2007 fees. We will have pressure washers, buckets, scrub brushes, sponges and soap available for member use only, on the main aisle hosing stations-2007 Member Card required. Remember, a cleaner boat is a faster boat and you’re more likely to use it more often.

Unpaid Craft
Many thanks to the 85% of JSCA members who have paid their 2007 craft and equipment storage fees. We are focusing our limited resources on chasing after the 15% of your fellow members who risk losing their spots and will be charged a $30 Late Fee in addition to their bill (after April 30 the late fee becomes $60). If you know someone who is unpaid please encourage them to contact us right away. We will be printing a list of unpaid members in a future “in the wind” as well as posting it on our website.

Late Payer Appeals
Any member who wishes to appeal the $30 late payment penalty is encouraged to send me an email and attend the next JSCA Operations Committee Meeting on Tuesday, April 17 at 1900H. There you will be given the opportunity to appeal the penalty before a committee of your peers.

JSCA Member Cards
Members who have paid their 2007 fees will have their membership access cards updated automatically for gaining access to our change rooms, showers and rooftop deck. This is our first year transitioning member cards from one year to the next and we have been experiencing a few problem cards within the 2700 we have updated. If your card is not working properly please bring it into the JSCA office asap and we will reprogram it. Please bring your membership card into the JSCA office at your convenience to get the 2007 membership card decal which will be required to receive your member discount at the Jericho Galley Patio & Grill.

Member Keys
2007 Member keys are available to paid up members for $5 +GST in the JSCA office.

Earth Day Mixed Media Painting Event
The Jericho Sailing Centre will facilitate a mixed media painting event hosted by avid Jericho paddler and artist, Jeanne Krabbendam, on Saturday, April 21. For more information stroke your way over to her website at www.jeannekrabbendam.

Wind & Water Art Show Sunday April 29
Original oil paintings by sea inspired artist Martin Ruygrok on display 1400H-1700H. Wine & Cheese. www.ruygrokart.com

Jericho Galley Patio & Grill Expands Service
The Jericho Galley Patio & Grill is now open 7 days a week 0900H-Sunset on weekends and 1100H-Sunset on weekdays weather depending.

Upcoming JSCA Meetings:
Operations Committee April 17 @ 1900H
Programs Committee April 18 @ 1900H
Marginal Wharf Planning Meeting April 24 @ 1900H

Proposed Changes to the Windsurfing Area
The JSCA Operations Committee will be considering a proposal by the UBC Sailing Club to increase their windsurfing rig rack storage space. The best solution we’ve heard so far is extending the rig rack row footprint 4’ North. We are interested in hearing from any members who may have alternative ideas. Options will be considered at the April 17 Operations Committee meeting @ 1900H, all members welcome to participate.

Windsurfing Swap
Our friends at Airtime Boardsports, Phillippe and his crew are having a windsurfing & kiteboarding equipment swap on Saturday, May 12 from 1000H-1400H in the parking lot behind their store at 3671 W 4th. A good time to clean out your garage!

Design a Piece of Jericho History
We are looking for members who are interested in voluntarily designing two memorial benches in our picnic areas. If you are interested, please contact me by return email or via phone 224-4177.

Join the Jericho Rescue Team
The Jericho Rescue Team is looking for experienced sailors, windsurfers, paddlers and rowers who are interested in developing their seamanship and water safety skills, and are willing to volunteer to assist their fellow boaters. The Jericho Rescue Team provides safety and rescue support for all on-water events facilitated by the JSCA. This year our Rescue Team members will provide rescue coverage for the over 90 on-water event days on our 2007 events calendar. Qualified candidates can sign up for the Jericho Rescue Team Training Course which will be conducted on April 28 & 29. We provide training in water safety and seamanship, Boathandling, boat rescue and first aid. Course graduates must complete ongoing Rescue Team training including the Pleasure Craft Operators Card, VHF Radio Licence, emergency first aid and CPR Certification (all provided). If you are interested please contact me in the Jericho office to discuss your qualification for this program.
